What was the Last “Classic” Album We Got in Hip Hop?

What was the Last “Classic” Album We Got in Hip Hop? In this new episode, we spoke about what it takes for a rap album to be considered a classic and which recent projects are worthy of being recognized as “classics”. Many people have been calling J.Cole’s The Off-Season a classic rap album even though it was just released weeks ago. We debated whether or not albums such as Pusha T’s Daytona, Travis Scott’s Astroworld, and other great albums should be considered classics. In your opinion, what was the last “classic” album we got in hip hop?

Fire. 4-5 years is my range. For deciding a “ classic” Daytona is forsure a future classic. And so is TLOP. We need more videos like these 🔥🔥

Love to see y’all get into a heated discussion! Big ups for this one.

I think there are albums I like to call “no-brainer” classics…essentially meaning like beyond the factor of time (how many years it’s been out) it’s clearly a classic. For example, Good Kid Maad City is a “no-brainer” because it didn’t take people until 2017 (5 years after release) to know that the album was a masterpiece & that it would stand the test of time. But I will say that those albums are rare & only come around like every two years. I think “4:44” by Jay-Z is a no-brainer if you ask most people in 2019/2020 they’d say it’s a classic. Also “Igor” by Tyler is a no-brainer to most people there’s no way that changes in 2-3 years.

Couldn't agree more, too many hip hop fans are early on determining the legacy of a body of work! The Mona Lisa wasn't hailed a classic a month after it was painted😂

I definitely agree with the idea of defining the difference between a masterpiece and a classic, and that the testament of time is the deciding factor between the two! Great video and insight! 🙏
