Boyz N The Hood feat. Ethan Embry

Actor Ethan Embry joins us to discuss 'Boyz N The Hood', John Singleton's sharply observed coming-of-age story that explores Black life in South Central Los Angeles with all its rich contours intact.

We have a wide-ranging conversation in which we discuss the film as one of the earliest mainstream successes of Black stories in Hollywood, the media controversies surrounding its theatrical release, and Singleton's masterful diessection of the many faces of capitalism's systemic oppression of people along racial and class lines.

Thanks for listening! We were definitely VERY aware of the makeup of the group discussing this movie when Ethan pitched it, but he made some very compelling points about what the movie meant to him, given that he grew up in LA very near to where the movie takes place. I'm glad we did an alright job of conveying our reasons for covering the film the way we did. Hope you enjoyed the episode!

Hello there. I think I’ve been a subscriber for a month or two but just barely divulged into the patreon. At first I was a bit troubled why you didn’t have an African American guest for this episode but you guys point it out in the episode. Yes! Excellent point to say that having three white people talk about this movie and pretty much reach who John Singleton was trying to do. Bring light to this POV of South Central LA to the mainstream.
