Titanic feat. Emmy Potter

Just in time for its 25th Anniversary theatrical re-release, writer and actor Emmy Potter joins us to discuss James Cameron's period romance disaster epic 'Titanic'. At the time of its release in 1997, it was the most expensive cinematic undertaking of all time, and ended up one of cinema's great success stories, becoming the highest-grossing film ever and netting a record 11 Academy Awards on Oscar Night.

We discuss James Cameron's near god-like ability to tell archetypal stories with an impeccable sense of richness and attention to detail, the film's deft juggling of multiple genres in service of a breathtakingly singular and cohesive whole, and why this might just be the director's most nuanced political statement.

...Rose interrupting the filthy irish lower-deck partying to sassily demonstrate "en pointe" is some proper early 90's proto-girl-boss cringe. Also, Billy Zane had the wiggiest wig I've ever seen in a movie (without it being a plot-point). ...also, I saw Titanic the first time in London, at age.. I dunno, 10 or 12, and have a very sweet memory of crying in the bathtub that same night, and not being sure why. I also remember - when it hit Sweden, half a year later - that it became a bit of a "haha, this movie seems stupid...but.. you know, maybe we should see it, anyway, in case it's not like lame, or whatever. No, I'm not into the Celine Dion song that plays in ads about it!" among the boy-crowd of that age-group. As far as melodramas go, it might be one of the most successful ones in modern times.

I grew up Mormon and Titanic was on the banned list of movies because of the sex and nudity. Many years after escaping the cult I got to enjoy this impressive movie. In the Mormon church they sing that hymn referenced (Nearer My God to Thee) on a regular basis.
