The Lost World: Jurassic Park feat. Peter Raleigh

Chicago-based academic and film lover Peter Raleigh joins us to discuss 'The Lost World', Steven Spielberg's oft-maligned, misunderstood sequel to smash hit 'Jurassic Park'. It's a movie with a bracing mean streak that marks a turning point for the director into a new phase of daringly conflicted storytelling.

We discuss the rejection of the first movie's childlike wonder in favor of a much more cynical worldview, the bevy of brilliant setpieces and their forebears within Spielberg's cinematic canon (most notably the horror beats of 'Jaws'), and the franchise's last great character addition in Pete Postlethwaite's Roland Tembo.

...I have this little pet theory that Julianne Moore occupies one of - if not the - top spot in Hollywood as an actor with "the most extreme discrepancy between genuine talent and middling filmography". I completely forgot that she was in this movie (and the movie itself, to be honest), but it makes a weird kind of sense. I think she is in this movie for the same reason that she said yes to Hannibal: "This is the sequel to an iconic, era-making movie. There is absolutely no way - in any universe - where this will be even one tenth as good, no matter the script or how much you put into the project. Are you still game?" "....yes." //Bless her though; one of the most genuinely talented actors around, and probably the best at embodying "women on the verge of a nervous breakdown" there ever has been.
