Community post #7: on Edrin and gender

Edrin, as a character, went through a lot of changes, both design wise and story wise. Edrin is Marcus' childhood friend, they've lost each other and got reunited in adulthood, as we've told in Reunion (you can read it here). It's worth pointing out that nothing in our story is set in stone until it's official, we're still pretty much exploring our characters' universe, backstories and motives.

We won't change Edrin and Marcus' past romantic relationship since it's a good turning point in Marcus' development as a character, but lately we've found ourselves wondering a little more on Edrin's role in our story, beyond being just Marcus' ex who's in good terms with him.

Edrin was first envisioned as an enby (as in nonbinary) character: we've explored this concept and we've realized that Edrin is a trans woman, more specifically a demigirl (she/they). Her name won't change - we like it very much and we feel it's an ambivalent / gender neutral name.

Once her and Marcus got separated,  Edrin adapted to the new society and took on an imposed male role. Even though she wasn't living in a constant state of pain and dysphoria, at some point in her story Edrin eventually realizes she's been putting on a mask, a performance of gender for years. If she's given the chance to express herself freely, she envisions herself (mostly) as a woman.

What does this chance, plot and relationships wise?

Not much. Her backstory was adapted a bit so she fits the overall flow of the story better and she doesn't feel like "just an ex", but her gender is just her gender. Personality and morals wise, she's unchanged.

We wanted to let you know about these changes before anyone else - even if they don't mean too much in terms of who this character is and what it represents. Our main goal is a to tell a beautiful story with queer characters doing things in a fantasy world.

We hope you like her new design!
