Marcus had been pining after Jonathan for four years at that point. Jonathan reciprocated the attraction for quite some time, but didn't act upon it. He was in a monogamous relationship with another man, Felipe, it was a happy one and Jonathan thought that his attraction to Marcus was purely physical.
However, Jonathan's relationship did end, when Felipe proposed to him and he couldn't say yes, realizing that he didn't want to marry Felipe. Jonathan left the condo and went to his sister's place for a while, to think about what happened and stay in a safe space. When Jonathan and Marcus were reunited after a few months, they confessed their feelings for each other and the tension that had been piling up for years was finally released, beautifully.
