Exclusive Video: We bought a 3D Printer. Now what?

Friends:

As we get back into the swing of regular content creation, we're making some behind-the-scenes videos just for Patrons. Al the details are in the video, so for once, I'm going to shut up and just post it.

Thanks to everyone for their recent words of sympathy and encouragement. It's appreciated.

Exclusive Video: We bought a 3D Printer. Now what?

Comments

Interesting - I would not consider the P1S to be a top of the line 3D printer (I actually own one - they aren't that expensive) even with Bambu you have the X1 series which are higher up. And although PETG is great there are other filaments which are even stronger.

Kenny Raby

Sorry I know they are quick and some like them but I don't watch shorts. A collection of short is still just a bunch of shorts. I used to like your videos quite a bit more than I do lately I don't even keep up with the Patreon anymore it is getting more boring. Sorry just my opinion.

Kenny Raby

I dont have much experience with it, but I believe you can actually print tpu molds with a 3d printer. Tpu is a flexible filament which can be used for making phone cases and vibrations reducing items. I'm sure there is a bunch of information from people who know better than me on Youtube.

Garrett Pelon

I understand the desire to keep the files/details close to the vest but if you want feedback maybe some carefully chosen folks could print, test and provide a bit wider feedback than fully in house development.

Stuart

Working on it! Thanks!

mmgross144

Yeah, ABS fumes are pretty nasty. Even with PETG, though, I personally take a "better safe than sorry" approach, and I keep my printers in an enclosure with a very small air filter, and it does at least help a bit with odor control. Rex, it looks like there's a window AC unit right behind your printer shelf. I wonder if it might make sense to build an extraction setup that vents out through the same window? [Edited to add: there are folks building DIY air purifiers using PC fans and home furnace air filters; here's an interesting resource I ran across a couple of months ago: https://github.com/opennukit/Nukit-Open-Air-Purifier]

Sam Livingston-Gray

Good point, I'm used to well ventilated places.

LiraNuna

That's a fair assessment.

Peter R Schuck

You are welcome, I hope things are settling for you, your family and extended family. I can only imagine how the parents are feeling. I'd be devastated beyond belief if something did. It nearly did to both my girls and other children when in Junior school I think is the equivalent. They were in 2 lines on the street parking side of a tennis court. Learning to hit the ball back to the instructor, when suddenly, I can still see it in my mind. A car came speeding through the fence. They all scattered, my youngest to her right and my eldest ran forward towards the side of the need post where there was another fence separating 2 courts. She was in the path of the car behind her steering right at her. It collected her from behind she flipped up on the bonnet up to the side of the windscreen, rolled off there and hit the ground. The car ended up stuck between the net post and the fence. I took off from where I was sitting behind the court, as did a mother beside me as well. Her daughter went to the same school. O got to my eldest and she was badly ahaken but appeared ok. I looked a round for my other daughter, saw she was ok. I spoke to the other mother who happened to be a Doctor. She checked her over quickly. We both decided to het our daughters into the players room which was quite big out of prying eyes. We again checked my eldest daughter. She had some rub marks from the astro turf and had some sore areas on her back and sides. Her daughter was fine, she got glanced off the side of the car. My youngest had part of her foot run over by a tire. Police turned up, fire brigade and an ambulance too. The ambulance personnel checked the 3 children over, no one else was hit, I checked. Then news came through that the radio was reporting on the accident saying that there had been a death. I had to call my wife's work and let them know to change the radio channel as my wife listened with others to that station. The ambulance personnel suggested they take the 3 girls to hospital to get checked over. I explained mine were ok, I had checked both ofvthem and I was a trained Nursr. Andcthat the other mother had checked them as well and she was a doctor. I didn't want to prolong what had happened going to a hospital. Spending hours waiting to be told they were fine. Neither didvthe Dr. I took them home but before I did, I spoke to the police officer and asked what would happen to the driver. What actually happened to him. He was parking his car and hit the wrong pedal. He was an elderly man who came up every day to walk his dog who he had sitting on his lap. Totally illegal. He was charged. Before we left I spoke to him and assured him that everyone was ok, nothing serious. He was in total shock. I put my arms around him, said it was ok, it wasn't intentional and wished him well. That shocked him thinking someone could just forgive him like that. The Dr said the same thing to diminished the hug. I learnt latter he was charged with a few offences, lost his licence for a while and fined heavily. I did ask the cops to go a bit easier on him No one was seriously injured it was just a plain old accident. That incident lives inside my daughters brain, she hates cars, she does drive, but is very wary of them when walking. Took a lot of guts to get her licence first go as well. She is now 31 my youngest is 27 married has some health problems, and we recently learnt she is 3 mths pregnant. Again hope you are mending emotionally andvthings get better for everyone. Take care. Your friend from Sydney Australia. Peter Edit: Sorry for long winded stories. Thought they might help with grief.

Peter R Schuck

No, it doesn't. There are a lot of days that I want to yell at the sky about the unfairness of it all, but yeah, it's going to happen to us all sooner or later unless we're the one who goes first.

Tom K

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I'll get on it!

Rex Krueger

James has been 3D printing for over a decade! He's owned like 10 printers. He loves it.

Rex Krueger

Good news: I can't do CAD and the guy who can hates to be on camera!

Rex Krueger

I'm glad you're excited. I am too.

Rex Krueger

Thanks for being so cool through this tough time.

Rex Krueger

The Hand Tool Hero won't reach that deep!!! Good joke!

Rex Krueger

It helps to hear what others have been through. I totally get what you're saying. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I hope we make videos in all of those categories. Thanks for reminding me what you like.

Rex Krueger

A sharpening guide is a great idea. We'll look into that.

Rex Krueger

That's very kind of you to say. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Well, plenty of people I trust right here! Thanks for your warm wishes.

Rex Krueger

It gets crazier than that; you can print stuff with wood fiber in the resin. I haven't explored that yet, but the options are amazing.

Rex Krueger

Excellent, we'll get that done.

Rex Krueger

I'm climbing out, but it's a deep hole. Thanks for being here!

Rex Krueger

Thank you! The last few weeks have been dark, but there's possibility in the future.

Rex Krueger

Man, that's a long list of things you're going through. I think you need support as much as i do. I hope you're looking out for yourself!

Rex Krueger

I've been spending a lot of time with my family. It helps. You're totally right.

Rex Krueger

I already see a therapist, so I've got that part covered. Thanks for the advice!

Rex Krueger

It's very kind of you to be so patient. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

The way he does it is he tells them that if they send him the stuff he will review it and give an honest opinion and will continue to feature them in future videos if it is up to his standards. It shows which companies the really believes in what they make.

Boney Boards

Well, that's a good tip! I'll check him out.

Rex Krueger

Man, that's a lot of loss. I guess we all get there if we're lucky enough to live a long life. Doesn't make it any easier.

Rex Krueger

Thanks for your kind words. The support I get here really helps.

Rex Krueger

That's a great tip! Making the video helped.

Rex Krueger

It's an idea! We'll look into it.

Rex Krueger

Man, i wish you all the best with that treatment! I have an old friend going through the same thing. it's no joke! All the luck to you!

Rex Krueger

I appreciate the advice! We also like the part to be heavy. Keeps it in place and gives the buyer a sense of quality. But of course you're right about rigidity

Rex Krueger

You're so kind! Thank you.

Rex Krueger

Michael; thanks for taking the time to write such a moving post! Your kind words really help.

Rex Krueger

We're absolutely looking into that. You're totally right.

Rex Krueger

You're totally right. This concern made us discard ABS as an option. PETG ticks all the boxes for us.

Rex Krueger

It does help! Words have a lot of power!

Rex Krueger

Well, I already see a therapist, so I've got covered. She's been very helpful.

Rex Krueger

You're totally right about the old tools! We're on it!

Rex Krueger

You're totally right! We're looking at all kinds of handles. That's the most obvious thing that would help woodworkers. We'll keep it affordable and with all the available materials, they'll be durable.

Rex Krueger

Peter, that was a very moving post. You made me misty eyed all over again. Thanks for feeling like you could share!

Rex Krueger

I'm reluctant to sell files since we're carefully choosing material, infill, and other criteria. I'd hate to see someone take shortcuts and then blame our designs.

Rex Krueger

I'm so glad you're interested. I always hate to speculate on prices, but i expect to be under $20. Maybe WAY under. And thanks for your warm wishes. We're getting back on our feet.

Rex Krueger

Thank you so much! Each of these processes is a new world. So much to learn.

Rex Krueger

Man, losing someone that young...it's just so hard. I wish you all the luck with your printer. It's more fun than i expected.

Rex Krueger

Excellent, we'll try to do more!

Rex Krueger

I do my best with snacks! Just had pumpkin seeds.

Rex Krueger

That means a lot coming from you! Glad you think we're on the right track. We looked at ABS, but the outgassing is a problem at scale. I have to watch out for my employees.

Rex Krueger

Love you back, bro. Thanks for understanding.

Rex Krueger

Hasn’t that passed?

Marco P. Lascari

Man, I have watched so many Shop Nation videos! I don't know him but I expect him to be at Workbenchcon.

Rex Krueger

The steps are about 5/8" wide and there are 7 of them. Good luck on your build!

Rex Krueger

I appreciate that so much! 'Feeling better this week!

Rex Krueger

You can't print molds for resin because they need to be flexible to release the part, but yes, you can print for sand-casting.

Rex Krueger

I kind of wish I took free stuff. These things aren't cheap!

Rex Krueger

A friend of mine has the same 3D printer. He was sent his by bambu and it is really nice. Definitely a huge step up from the old 3D printers. Electric skateboards sometimes have 3D printed gears out of nylon with 100 fill and it is very durable. I’m sure you will find plenty of things to 3D print now that you have one.

Boney Boards

Using your 3D printer could you make your own molds? Or use it to make sand cast molds for metal parts….

danno

Your community understands and loves you. Take all the time you need for healing and for production of new content and tool production. We will still be with you when things settle down for you.

Curtis Lee Zeitelhack

Rex, what were the step widths on that block? I'll just make one out of scrap wood. Sorry, I have 3d printers, too, but it's usually a lot faster to make something simple out of wood.

art hixson

Prayers for you and your family. Take your time, we all want the best for you. Great idea about 3D printing. FYI, Shop Nation does a bunch of 3D printing and he is located in Ohio. Southwest Ohio I believe. Not sure if you know him, but he has a nice size 3D printing farm. I only know him from You Tube, but seems like a pretty solid guy. I know he is an Engineer, Mechanical I think, for what it’s worth.

Marco P. Lascari

please take your time. We are all still here. We love you.

James Barros

Rex, I think the 3d printing approach is the right way to go. Looking forward to seeing more products from you and your company! PETG is pretty good, you may want to explore ABS as well for higher impact projects! You may also be able to save money by NOT using 100% infill as that is overkill and takes a very long time to print while also increasing material cost. Consider running tests to find the sweet spot that works for you.

LiraNuna

For the shorts, is it possible to just do a playlist? Unless the shorts are themed a random set of shorts would not appeal to me. For the business, Compass Rose Jerky and Fruit Chips. Keep your energy up in the shop! 😜

Geoffrey Wilson

Thanks, Rex. My condolences, again. Good on you for not making "general public" content out of this, but keeping us informed. I am sure it is not an easy line to walk, and my 2 cents: You are doing it very well. Also, apart from the grim and sad realities that led to this video, I really appreciate these more vloggy/behind the scenes videos. Very interesting, thanks!

Helge

PS: I also bought a 3d printer 8 weeks ago (just an A1 Mini for now): So useful for workshop organization, adapters, spare parts or upgrade for tools. I can't wait to see what useful problem solvers you develop.

Jack

My condolences. Take as much time as you need. A year ago i stood at the grave of a friend, work colleague and former apprentice who didn't live to be 30. that was one of the hardest things for me so far. Llike you, I've also had a lot of luck with deaths in the family and among friends (6-7 years old when my grandfathers died) and over 20 years later my grandmothers, each over 90 years old.

Jack

So sorry for your loss and I have you in my prayers for healing at this difficult time. 🙏🙏 I enjoyed our conversation about draft angles etc. ss I worked as a mold designer in my youth in Hartville,Oh for about 10 years with some QC work. Thanks for all the work you put into your craft and I have learned a lot from you. Take care Brother, you and your family are in my prayers.

Mark Yarian

I understand your mourning, and that you need to take time. You are fortunate you have family....you will not grow an emotional callus about this, but time will soften the edges...and later you too might be a resource for others in your family in this regard. As for the high knobs, TAKE MY MONEY! Looks like I'll need three or four, maybe more. Then I'll sell off my low knobs, maybe recoup a bit on them. Let us all know your prices, and we'll get back to you.

Ryan S Grimm

Just a thought with 3D printing. You could sell the files to those that have 3D printers on an honour basis that they don't on sell or give away your hard work. Like selling the plans. It would help some like me who have no exposure as yet to look at the file structure and design. For our own thoughts of items to print. Not that cheap are they.

Peter R Schuck

Yes a very good point, that is a pure necessity same with jewellery making. Need an exhaust when annealing, soldering, polishing items. Can be very toxic. Even sanding the fine particles get in the air, just like wood dust and saw dust are hazardous.

Peter R Schuck

You could also print in Carbon Fibre and I think there is fake looking wood spools as well. I've been thinking about getting a 3D printer too. Will wait and see how well the printers hold up. Thanks for this video, you have a great team around you.

Peter R Schuck

Rex, I'm sorry about the young girl passed away. It was worth a good try and the family member donor was exceptionally great. It's hard dealing with deaths. I've had more than my fair share having been a Registered Nurse for many years. I've had to stand by and watch people pass. I never saw my father pass as he was nowhere around, out gambling and had a massive heart attack. My mother passed one morning around 6am the day before my wife's birthday back in 1981 in a Hospice and they only called to give me the bad news. They didn't, Nuns, give me a courtesy call to advise me I should go there. I didn't expect her to pass on. I think they didn't give her her tablets for her heart and kidney issues which sped up her going. I was furious about it but was in a turmoil having to again part ways with the woman I have missed Andover all my life. Just like you and probably most other members do or have. I miss her every day, but she would be 111 if she was still with us. Just remember the good things, try and put the sadness behind you. It is hard to do but will get a little better in time. My best to you, your family and other extended family members dealing with this sad time. Wishing you well. Nice to see you back but don't forget to grieve it's important to go through that. A book I read 50 yrs ago called Death and Dying by Elizabeth Kubler Ross. It helped me a lot dealing with those emotions both as a son and as a Nurse. Regards, Peter

Peter R Schuck

3D printers are so capable of making thins I thought that wood working tools have many handles that break and the printer could replicate them. I , as most of us , have made tool handles but if available I think that there would be a market for them. Also there are other things in wood working tool parts that could be copied. And your company could keep common stock of somethings and have special orders for other not so common items. But of course that is just an idea that I had and that you all have already though of . There are so many other things that can be copied out there for wood workers.

Carlos Alvarado

3D printing is moving so fast, the quality gets better and better. My suggestions, look at producing jigs for your work and bringing back old tools that would otherwise be uneconomic.

Matthew Doye

Sorry for your loss. I lost friends when still in my teens and a parent in my twenties, all I can say from those experiences is that grief counselling works.

Matthew Doye

Thanks rex. Sorry for your loss. I know that's not all that helpful from someone you've never met but, I just hope this helps a little. Glad to hear you found a way to help your company. 3d printing is super cool tech.

Dave West

When building a print farm make sure you consider getting rid of fumes (some are not good for health) especially if you move into ABS from PETG

Stuart

Rex very sorry for your loss. One suggestion of 3d printing is your poor man tools. I 3d printed a kerfing plane and it works great. Printing those niche tools to get people started would be a great idea.

Will Baumgardner

Hi Rex, From your video thumbnail, I could tell you're having a tough time dealing with your grief. It's rough for me too. I'm neurodivergent. I always have a hard time dealing with intense emotions. I wish I could give you the secret to getting over it, but I can't. I found that I never "get over it". The grief will soften but never truly go away. It will stay with you as a familiar melancholy. One therapist told me that the feeling is proof that the deceased is still alive and living in your heart. So embrace it. Even years after the loss of my parents, I still find myself tearing up at times. Instead, I learned to manage and embrace it. I learned of the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos. It's a joyful celebration of those loved ones who have left this place. It's worth researching. If you need to explain it to children, Pixar made a great movie about it called "Coco". Adults find it enlightening as well. As far as the shorts compilations: I don't need them, but others might enjoy them. I have a habit of clicking on every "Rex Video" I see in my feed. Some of the shorts are quite funny. Like the latest one on using a shooting board. "You're trying to shoot it, not beat a confession out of it." That got a loud guffaw out of me. And my final comment: I got an old #5 that had seen better days. It looked like it was dropped from a substantial height. The top of the frog and adjustment lever had broken off and 1/2 the tote was missing. I was just starting and needed every reliable plane I could get my hands on. So I turned that into a dedicated scrub plane. To replace the tote, a friend of mine printed out a tote and high knob for me out of white PLA. The surfaces were nubbly, but I decided NOT to smooth them out. The texture gave me a solid grip on the tote, which works great on a scrub plane. It keeps the plane going straight even when you hit a patch of tough grain. Hang in there.

Michael Bennett

My sincere condolences for your loss. Take care.

Patricia Robbert

Don't get hung up on infill rates as a way of changing strength. Lots of what we look for in a "strong" part is lack of flexibility. Rigidity scales with the 4th power of the radius, so almost all the rigidity in any part comes from the outside skin. If you remove half the mass from a steel rod by turning it into a tube you only reduce rigidity by 1/4. Spending additional time/money/plastic on depositing material in the middle of your print often doesn't add enough to compensate for the time/money/plastic. The various infill geometries in 3d printing are amazing things in terms of material efficiency. Sorry that things have been bad. I feel like that too when things are bad. Wishing you all the best.

hollo

Sorry for your loss. Hang in there. I am currently going through cancer treatment. I’m doing very well. I very much enjoy your videos. I totally understand your situation. Just know you have our support and wish you the very best.

David Dawley

Sorry for your loss - take your time to sort yourself out. Shorts - great idea....can you also provide a link as to source vid - I've forgotten so much of what you have produced....and if you can group by subject matter that would be great. Probably a big ask

Rob Lovett

Hi Rex sorry for your loss. Talk about your loss and the person it will help. And give your self time

Thomas mcglynn

Loss is shit. Grief is hard. Please take your time getting back to normal. Being knackered is normal. Sorry for your loss.

Ian Hampson

I'm sorry again for your loss, but don't feel bad for not knowing how to process it. I've lost both parents, all four grandparents, and all my aunts and uncles while old enough to process it and they've all been different. Don't feel bad. As for the shorts collect, that's not my thing, but it won't run me off, either.

Tom K

Haven't watched yet, but for 3d printing in a wood shop, look up Darren's workshop on yt. Nice fella from Australia.

mooklepticon

I enjoy your Videos at whatever pace they come along. Take care of family first.

mtnman

Sympathies & condolences for your loss. Perhaps a session or 2 with a grief counselor is in order?

Daniel L. Quigg

Take your time, take care of your family, and let things happen in time!

Gerald Eddy

Been there… didn’t want the t-shirt. I can relate to your experiences… they can suck the life out of you. While you work through the grief (pushing it aside only buries land mines randomly in your path) but do try to focus on the positives about the one that you lost as it helps to restore energy. Having said that I am really looking forward towards future projects and products (still have a few that I have not put together like the router plane). I have been working through my own issues that drain energy, like 7 family deaths in the last decade, kidney cancer in 2005 leading to (directly and indirectly) 12 surgeries. The last one has left me with very low energy levels, my batteries tap out fast. I found out last Wednesday that my heart is weak, so now begins the tests and scans to find out why. So be encouraged, you will climb out of this valley!

mmgross144

The 3D printer will open a ton of options for your company. Pretty exciting stuff! So sorry for your loss. Condolences to you and your family.

Jorge Harada

I lost my brother a couple of years ago. It takes time to work through it but the enthusiasm shown with the back half of the video tells me that you are progressing well.

Richard C von Brecht

Yeah, James ‘ll be wiped out at the thought of great tools made from plastic

Richard C von Brecht

My condolences to you and your family. And yes, I'd love to see grouped short videos!

Chip

Hope you can get back to normal quickly, but not rushed. The 3d printer opens up a lot of options. Looking forward to what the future holds. I know nothing about 3d, so may be a stupid question - Can you print stuff with a wood grain look?

Rick Prosser

Again my condolences on the loss of young family member. Talking about it to people you trust helps.

Karl Weuste

Thank you for the privilege of sharing with us.

Matthew Joseph Kennedy

Sorry for your loss. Take the time needed. I enjoy rewatching your videos. We’re not going anywhere.

Matthew Joseph Kennedy

A loss in the family is always tough. It takes time. Regarding the shorts: That makes no sense to me. I prefer them short and to the point, that way people can find the most relevant more easily too. Regarding the 3d printing, great idea. Injection moulds are just rediculously expensive. For these kinds of series, printing makes a lot of sense. I wonder if James will ask for blue knobs (I doubt it though, he prefers wood). The best tools will be the ones where you think, hmm, why isn't there a tool for that? Maybe a one piece sharpening guide?

Wouter Engels

Healing takes time, emotional and physical. I like build videos which is what drew me to your channel and your Patreon. I think YouTube is forgetting that out. I see many more build videos in my recommendations and far fewer tool reviews. 15-30 is. Good length of me with longer builds in subsequent episodes if required, like your chair build. Your Moravian still series is a good demonstration that even building the same project different ways helps people with different skills and tools find ways to create. Also, I think that is what I like about furniture forensics. You show how old things were built and explain how it can be replicated. Sorry for your loss. You will heal as well your family. Thanks for all you do

Chris St. Cyr

Good call on the 3D printing rather than injection molding. Less money, more flexibility, same quality, sounds like it was a no brainer (nothing is, but still). Also, I went through a similar situation. Until I was in my mid-30s, I had "walked between the raindrops" and never had to build the internal skills to deal with anything truly negative. I went through a divorce and was incapable of dealing with the emotions. Once I realized that I was emotional ill-equipped things began to change, because I was aware. It still was not easy, but I was at least capable of dealing with the issues. I have no idea if this helped, but sometimes it helps knowing there are others in similar circumstances. Oh, and I survived better than before, so that's good too.

Bill Brisky

You own a company with a very specific product that can handle plane and saw screws....yet you use a screwdriver? :-D Neat concepts! Looking forward to what comes. Again, sorry on your loss.

Bradley Barth

Sorry for your loss, Rex! Take your time. I, for one, try to avoid YouTube as much as possible (such a time sink!). So I watch all your videos as they come out on Patreon. I'd appreciate seeing the shorts here (aggregated in longer videos would work well). Looking forward to seeing more experiments from Compass Rose. I think you've been doing an excellent job in introducing the parts and taking us in along the process, no modelling video needed. Looking forward to the next videos when they're ready.

Borjan Tchakaloff

Alternatively, and I only say this as an idea not a request, you could make a Compass Rose channel that focuses on the 3D printing aspects of your work, and keep your normal content on your main channel. Again just an idea :)

Sam Bender II

My condolences, Rex, and glad to hear exciting developments are happening with compass rose!

Michael Carman

I think 3D printing is a great direction for you. But please, please, PLEASE don't start producing videos about CAD modeling and design. I find nothing more boring. I like to do things with my hands. 3D printing can go on in the background.

Brian Taylor

It will be int5to see what James Wright thinks, as he disliked plastic parts. Not that his opinion should influence your business directions. Best wishes Rex. Condolences on you loss.

Sumihisa Aota

I am interested in 100lbs of beef jerky lol

Chris DuCasse

So sorry for your loss, Rex.
