Early Access Video: Don't Be Pro

Friends:

We all hear a lot of talk about "how the pros do it." YouTube is filled with tips that help you to be more "pro."

But is that really a good idea?

Today, I take on the idea that pros are better woodworkers. I also get into the myths around professional woodworking and what happens when you make your hobby your profession.

I'm joined by Brad from Brad's Workbench, a former electrician who made the leap into pro woodworking. Brad helps me dispel some of the myths around our profession.

As usual, big thanks to all of you for making this kind of content possible. I'm not sure I could be this honest and vulnerable without your support and community. Woodworking might be more stressful than it used to be, but being a part of this community is always fun and exciting.

Happy Saturday!

I used to think about going pro. But I'm now pushing 60 and it's just not in the cards anymore. Health issues make working full-time and at full speed as a pro impossible. I've applied for SSD and hopefully I'll get it. I do plan on continuing my woodworking, but as an artist. I'm going to make what I want when I want. If it's good enough I'll try and sell it if not I'll give it away. I'm currently reading Christopher Schwarz's book on Stick chairs and think I'm going to try that. He's made a lot of chairs to get to his level and that took him 18 years. I know what I'm up against and I'm just going to roll with it. If I ever make money hey bonus. I'll be retired and doing what I like.

I love this video. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "Do what you love and the money will follow" I could retire today. I think better advice would be: don't let your day job eat your soul. Save some time and self for an immersive hobby.
