Exclusive Video: Sharpen a Card Scraper

Friends:

Did you buy a card scraper to support the Patron Scholarship? Awesome!

Now what?

In today's exclusive video, I'll show you a variety of techniques for getting that scraper to take fine shavings and leave a silky surface on your work. I go nice and slow and show each step in detail. Whether or not you've bought one of our limited edition scrapers, you'll probably get a few good tips from this video.

We've got one more week to raise money for the Scholarship and then I'll be back to tell you how to apply.

We'll also have a regular video on Saturday.

My family has ice-cream on Wednesdays, so I'm totally pumped about that.

It would be nice to see what the scraper's edge looks like under a microscope. Is the burr at right edges to the blade?

Madeleine Yeh

Oh! how would I know if it is hard enough. I have used it for many years and it still works so how do I fine out?

Carlos Alvarado

That's a great way to do it!

Rex Krueger

You're very welcome!

Rex Krueger

I have a variety of scrapers, some of which are pretty hard. I use a carbide burnisher. They are available at Lee Valley. I got a carbide rod from AliExpress and fitted a handle. It works great. Other sources of cheap carbide round stock include busted end mills (if you know a machinist), dulled solid carbide router bits, and dulled carbide die grinder bits.

Brian Taylor

Thank you for the excellent tutorial Rex.

Matt Evans-Koch

It does! That's everything we've accomplished so far. It's a good start.

Rex Krueger

They often work well, but they're not all the same, so some of them are hard enough and some are too soft.

Rex Krueger

I'm afraid not. "Cold rolled" isn't the same as hardened. You need something hardened. Sometimes a screwdriver handle is enough....but not for the Compass Rose Card Scrapers. They're too hard.

Rex Krueger

I always sharpen both sides. The video was already pretty long, so I didn't show both.

Rex Krueger

You totally can...but I never have, so I don't think the risk is so great.

Rex Krueger

I think that's a great idea! I think I'll try it.

Rex Krueger

If I may ask, does the $1115 contain people who have upped their patron tier?

Raul Kääp

Thanks that helps a lot and could one use a knife sharpener rod for a burnisher?

Carlos Alvarado

Nice. I made my own burnisher with 1/4" cold rolled steel rod (sku 2279389 at Menards). Is that hard enough or no?

Bradley Barth

Great video. I've watched so many on sharpening card scrapers and usually end up more confused than before watching. Question: do you sharpen both sides of the scraper or just one as you showed?

Amy Holderness

Wow - that looks like you can get a nasty gash on your hand if not very careful.

Rick Prosser

Great tutorial! I was always taught to slightly round over the corners of the card scraper when filing so as not for the corners to dig in to the wood while scraping. When I say round over I mean slightly file on a different micro-plane surface the corners from the cutting edge so as the corners will not dig into your wood stock. What is your opinion on this technique?
