Today, you get the first look at the newest tool from Compass Rose Toolworks: the "Ready-Set" Planing Stop.
I'm a huge advocate for the toothed, steel planing stop. It's far faster and more efficient than a tail-vise and it helps you develop better control over your tools. Unfortunately, most stops require big modifications to your bench. We wanted to design a stop that was easy to install with NO changes to your existing workbench.

Having a hard time picturing that. I need to plane extremely thin spruce and hardwood plates for the tops, sides and backs of guitars. The big boys of course just get a thicknessing drum sander but I am stubbornly trying to do this with hand tools. I could see a couple of dedicated locations with relief for the flat head screw and planing stop...I plane the pieces down to about .10" or so;)

2023-07-14 12:52:53 +0000 UTCOk, I want to be able to remove my stop plane (just bought a pair) from the bench once in a while when I need the space for a big piece…. How about threaded brass (or 304 ss) inserts in the bench a some low profile thumb screws…? Or, perhaps one thumbscrew and two stabilizing pins with sockets for the pins recessed in the bench top?? (Latter might be hard to remove depending on tolerance and torquing while lifting it…?)

2023-06-13 18:07:44 +0000 UTCIf you look at the Tools for Working wood stop, they show it mounted to a block that is bolted to the end of the bench with one bolt. The stop is just rotated into place when needed.That might be the ticket and you can do it with ours.n

I've seen you using these in your videos, and I recently drilled a bunch of holes in my workbench so that I could use a variety of different bench dogs, planing stops, and holdfasts, but the low profile planning stops that I have purchased so far are smooth bars that do not have teeth, and I have noticed a bit of sliding around. (I got two, so that I can position them perpendicular to each other, and hold it on two sides, but it can still move around.) As someone with a background in design, I really like the way that you think through the problem, and come up with an elegant, yet simple solution. And I also very much appreciate you detailing all of the different steps and false starts and refinements that you had to go through. From what I have seen, getting anything manufactured seems to always take much longer than anyone predicts, even without pandemic slow downs. Thanks again! Looking forward to it! 👍

Since I made my bench several years ago I made mine from a gate hinge and placed it on a 3x3 block so that I can raise it up and down works great. I reset the teeth piece so that it is flat on the table and does not obstruct the table top but there are many of us that have not had a chance to make a planing stop and your products are worth buying and of great quality so again thank you very much for all that you do to make us better wood workers

2023-06-10 13:49:40 +0000 UTCJust bought one...use my bench most of the time for guitar building and can't have anything sharp and metal permanently attached to the top, but so often need a planing stop. Going to experiment with attaching it to a 3/4" round bench dog, I suspect that one screw towards the teeth end will be sufficient, not sure whether the stop will want to rotate w just one attachment point, seems like it wouldn't, but can always add epoxy to the mix. Suggestions welcome;)

I recently noticed the cover in a video and thought where do those come from??? I just bought 2 from the Compass Rose site. Why 2? Well my workshop is in the garage and in CT it is not worth heating in the winter and uncomfortably cold to do hand tool work. My solution, my furnace room has a narrow space in it that would fit a hand tool work bench. No pesky fine sawdust from hand tool work only work. So in the fall I will be making an indoor bench for winter time use. Thanks for creating great tools for us. My Hand Tool hero is in use every day I am in the shop.
