Early Access Video: The Mysterious Scottish Infill

Friends:

By popular demand, I'm back with another entry into the Tool Stories series. This week, a Scottish infill smoothing plane that is (unbelievably) home-made.

Craftsman-made infill planes were actually quite common at the end of the 19th Century, and this one is an especially good example. From the cast gunmetal body to the exquisite walnut infill to the owner's marks and patina, this tool tells a lively story.

I've captured all the details on film and they're here, just for you.

Here is the link to the article I mention: https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/blog/1172

(It's actually only one part; I remembered wrong)

Happy Saturday!

PS: My family's medical drama appears to be cooling off, so I should be more responsive and available over the next few weeks. I'm going right now to answer all my messages. Thanks to everyone for their patience.

What an incredible article. Absolutely spellbinding. Thank you, Rex Krueger.

Really cool video Rex! I really loved your Legendary Scottish Infill video and this is a nice compliment to that one.

Stefan Tarras

Excellent Rex.👏

History is fascinating. Norm Abram took us to the Great Salt Lake where folks were uprooting an old railroad trestle that was made out of redwood. I'm not suggesting you go to that extreme, but maybe you could talk about what was the original function. Maybe a shipwreck or a shipyard, etc. Just a thought.

My guess on the plane stop marks would be planing thinner, more difficult woods...when you're in a rhythm sometimes the lighter piece slides back when you are cocking for the next stroke and you fail to stop the forward stroke in time, dropping off the work and slamming into the stop. Of course with your beloved hand built plane you'd only do this a couple of times before adjusting your technique. Could have also been an apprentice or beginner, same mistake and quickly interrupted;)

It's a conspiracy! You and James are constantly making content about exactly what I've been reading about the same day you post it (which is impressive if you somehow lift it from my brain and produce the videos the same day)! It must be the infamous woodworking mind waves boring into my brain! :^) Happy to hear it's going better with the family situation :^)

Great to hear that the medical situation is improving Rex. Best wishes it continues to improve. Enjoyed the tool story. Looking forward to seeing more on just about anything you can come up with. Have a good weekend.

Somehow I’ve backed into collecting old planes. It started innocently. I bought a Stanley No 4 Sweetheart because you loved yours so much. Next thing I know I inherit some Keen Kutters. Then my daughter in law gives her grandfather’s Stanley jack panel. Now people are asking me if I want some old plane they found in a barn or basement. After this video I’m at the point of no return. I’ll have to hunt down one of those nicer brass infill planes.

just today i picked up a sandusky tool company coffin smoother, only $7.50, not bad for a collector.

Planely, you know what of you speak.

Another well done piece! Take your time with your family, crap happens to everyone. My prayers are for you and your family’s health and well being.

This is really one of your best tool stories video - The attention to detail, the history lesson and the comparison with the others. I could tell that you had a lot of fun making this one!

I’m glad to hear that the medical drama from your family is subsiding! Cheers to good health!

Less medical drama: excellent. Keep that trend going.

I specifically want to see it all... :)

Do you have any old squares? That seems like an interesting topic, would love to see some tests on how well or not they held up over the years!
