The Minimum Timber Bench Pt 4.

Friends:

The bench is framed-up!  We're down to just the top and this is the perfect time to go over my favorite features and point out all the places I cut out material. I think the "skeleton" is the most interesting part. In part 5 (our final part), I'll test the bench and talk about it's strengths and weaknesses.

Just like usual, there are extra photos in the build thread

If you're having any trouble getting on to the forum, email Nic@woodworkforhumans.com and he'll get you sorted out.

Hope you're having a great week!

The Minimum Timber Bench Pt 4.

Comments

You've read my mind!

It handles regular planing very well, but traversing across the table is less great. We'll add a shelf to add weight at some point. I should also say that I traverse less and less the longer I work.

You've read my mind! A shelf and some tools is the last piece of the puzzle.

Rex Krueger

I just filmed the test video and it will be out next week. You're totally right; plenty stiff but moves a little. Weight is the fix. I think a shelf and some tools is the answer.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Re too light for planing…well the stuff one would put on a shelf will likely make up for much of the decrease in wood weight.

Todd Maurer

Yes! Hopefully this gets covered in part 5.

Borjan Tchakaloff

It has good joinery. I am just wondering if it will be to light when wood planning??

Dan Delie

OW! This is going to be a sturdy bench. You could also put a shelf at the stretchers and place rarely used, heavy tools on the shelf to increase mass. Thank you Rex. Looking forward to seeing the top go on and what kinds of work holding you add. Take care and have a good weekend.

Matt Evans-Koch

I had the same thought - traditional benches rely on mass. If it turns out that the minimum bench is too light, it should be a simple matter to screw some plywood to the underside of the cross braces and fill the resulting cavity with something cheap and heavy, like sand.

Brian Taylor

The bench certainly has a very stiff construction. I'm really curious to see this bench in action. I fairly sure it will be strong and stiff enough, but I wonder if it won't move when planing due to a lack of weight. I really hope it will work out, because I think this project s a really good idea

Great job with this project! It is amazing to see how the experience you have has allowed you to make something so minimal yet still robust enough to be sustainable.
