Early Access Video: Import Tool Madness, $8 Drawknife

Friends:

Today's video was supposed to be a simple review of an impossibly cheap tool, but one thing leads to another and I ended up doing a whole exploration of drawknife techniques and workholding.

If you let the spirit take you, you might be surprised where you end up.

In other news, my whole family has COVID. (We're all fine; it's like a bad cold.) So please forgive me if I'm a little slow with my communications for the new few days.

The caffeine is wearing off, so I'm going back to bed.

Stay safe!

Early Access Video: Import Tool Madness, $8 Drawknife

I've hugely enjoyed this membership and have so far made the improved mallet (twice), the outdoor stump bench, the 2x4 stool, shooting board, bench hook, six board chest, and finally the English joiner's bench with big leg vise and holdfasts. What fun! Next on my list - the saw sharpening vise.

Paul Reynolds

One concern I have about the reviewed draw knife is the perhaps slight potential for sweaty palms to slip on the shiny metal handles, and the relative proximity of the blade. Perhaps a little friction tape or something on the handles would improve the grip and control.

Paul Reynolds

Very nice video. Thank you Rex and I hope you and family are back to 100% health lickety-split.

Paul Reynolds

When the joints are properly designed they actually tighten as the wood dries.

Fred Gosbee

I think the reason the pivot cut works better is the same as why a diagonal cut with a shooting board is easier. You’re creating a gradual slicing motion instead of cutting with the whole blade at once. Thanks for the video! I hope you and family weather the Covid okay!

Rex, we now have beef. I hadn't even gone to that website before and now I've placed 3 substantial orders for some truly bizarre tools that will probably not resemble the product I receive and so how dare you throw catnip at my tool obsession?

STFU FFS (Martín)

Holy moley Rex, moving the shop, getting COVID and still making videos. You are one tough nut to crack. Thank you for the tool review. I have had one drawknife with straight handles (borrowed at some point) and really enjoyed working with it. What I found I liked most was being able to skew the blade without having to cock my wrist like with handles that are 90 degrees to the cutting edge. Take care and be sure to stay hydrated and get lots of rest. Best wishes for speedy recovery and a healthy and happy week ahead.

Matt Evans-Koch

I like the ergonomics of that draw knife. Lots easier on your wrists. The traditional draw knife is easier to store and that’s maybe why this design isn’t popular in western wood working. Feel better and take care of that daughter of yours.

Last week, I found out I had COVID also. The operative word in that sentence is "had". I've been feeling very run-down, with muscle pain and weakness. So I got a COVID antibody test and it told me I had it asymptomatically sometime in the past. So I'm probably experiencing what they call "Long COVID". I hope you and your family get better soon. By the way, I also bought that $2 rasp you reviewed several years ago. I figured, for 2 bucks, what the hell. It worked OK. I don't have a rat-tail rasp, so it fills that niche in my tools. I had it stuck into my pencil can and absent-mindedly grabbed it by the razorwire end once... once.

Hope you guys feel better soon. There really is something to the notion of "good enough to start with". Beautiful, optimized hand tools are great, but getting started today is better at the beginning than worrying about super fine degrees of ergonomics etc.

Sean McGown

Great video rex. Hope you guys all feel better soon.

Search E-Bay for "Cooper's tool Woodworking scraper Antique!" and see, you got a deal! That one is $208.00

Add a good edge on the convex side & you've got a good pizza knife / draw knife combo!

Daniel L. Quigg

Oo, that looks so clean and crisp now. Your colour looks great too. Glad to see you back doing explorations.

William Allen

I'm really liking the new shop. Wish I could justify doing something like that. But, I miss the old times where you had to share your inconveniences of working around the house. That's where most of us are and live our woodworking lives. The new setup seems more like some of the other shows. Maybe it takes away the feelings of being just like us. Mirroring us, so to speak.

Larry W Thayer

Welcome back to the regular videos. Get everyone well soon. My wife and I just did the "COVID dance".

David Suitor

I hope you and your family get better soon. I have an article from issue 12 (The Van Gogh Chair) of the M&T magazine, which shows a similar knife. It appears the work is done primarily shaving forward. One picture shows a chest plate to hold the wood, like your video did. Thanks for the video Rex. Totally educational. I don’t get the greenwood chair thing. Why doesn’t the chair collapse as it dries?

Don Heselton

Get well soon. COVID is still knocking out coworkers as recently as this week. EVERYONE has come back saying it was really surprising how much COVID knocked them down.

Juan Rivera

Wishing you and your family a speedy and full recovery. I really enjoy your videos, even for tools and projects (such as this one) that I am not likely to undertake any time soon. This one was in complete harmony with your credo -- affordable and creative ideas for woodworking. I also appreciate your inclination to dive into historical practices. Between you and James Wright, not to mention our forum, I've learned so much this year. Great job, Rex!

John Shufelt

I keep thinking that when I retire my wife and I will probably be camping more. Wouldn't it be nice to have a kit of hand tools and things to work wood while camping using materials like firewood. I love the bib thing for that. Thanks for another great video!

John Hiemstra

Oh no! Praying everyone gets better soon!

Bryce Carver

Hope you and the family get well soon. Enjoyed the video.

Robert Judy

Hope the family gets better soon and enjoyed this video with the new shop

Karl Weuste

cliff whitefoot

Hope you, and yours get well soon.

Kevin S Thomas

Got a link to that drawknife?

Ethan Chitty

I'm going up that way late next week...keep that covid at bay until Friday please.😁

Steve Jones

I hope you all get well soon, take care!

Vic Vancini

Sorry to hear about you guys going down. Yeah, my wife's family is too. Seems like 50% of us have had it. Touch wood, not me (at least yet).
