Exclusive Video: Painting and Mission-Creep

Friends:

I had planned a productive week in the shop. I was going to finish setup and maybe start a new project. But men plan and God laughs.

Join me as I set out to paint a single wall and things spiral completely out of control.

Happy Saturday!

I feel you on that. It's all a question of "is it worth it?". If we knew starting out what the entirety of the project would be, I would say without a doubt "YES". Even knowing you already had roller stuff. But for just one wall? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, sorry to hear about it all.

Braden Mabry

So I have been in my house for about a year and a half, and I am going to dedicate the next several weekends that are cool enough to work, its been 100 plus for a while now here in Texas, but until I actually get the outbuilding and garage organized I just dont want to be in it and stuff ends up everywhere and its just a mess. Organizing is not fun, but is needed for you to want to be in the space or it does not help your mental health to do the hobby.

Billy Schwake

DIY Perks did that a while back too. Worked really well.

Casey Wagner

I watched a YouTube video https://youtu.be/xhqlqo-KUIY on sound proofing where a guy bought a ton of old cotton towels which he framed in simple wooden frames. He tested the contraption with some kind of microphone and it was better than the bought professional sound proofing for music studios

Ola Bovin

I understand about the thick primer. I had to use dryloc on a basement wall once. I get tired just thinking about. On the bright side it’s behind you now… literally it will be behind you in the videos… and truthfully it looks great! My hat goes off to you as I bow in appreciating a job well done. Thanks for sharing with us

Link Dickerson

I know the feeling. My shop was built 3 years ago, and I am still finishing the walls, two more sheets of plywood need to go up. Then UGH PAINTING. The new shop looks great and can't wait to see some work in it.

Skully Wood and Metal

A green screen is just for fun, it's not a necesaty. And to be honest: You could just paint the wall green in stead of buying an expensive screen. But then you will be stuck with a green wall...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Absolutely, although at that moment , it's usually less funny. Anyway, the space does look a lot brighter, which for me, would be a very good thing. I hope it will be for you as well. Good luck with any remaining items (I recall you mentioned an issue with the plumbing?) and I'm looking forward to new projects.

Wouter Engels

Yeah, it was a hard week.

Rex Krueger

That sounds like a lot of work!

Rex Krueger

I used Sherwin Williams Eider White. I really looks great.

Rex Krueger

I just bought a HUGE AC until to deal with the heat. Gets mighty hot in this old building.

Rex Krueger

I don't know if green screen is really right for this channel, but I do have a lot of options now.

Rex Krueger

It didn't cost 5k, but it did cost a LOT more than I was expecting.

Rex Krueger

I don't do billable work. My whole business is content, sooooo......yeah, it hasn't been great for revenue, but the Patrons make that much easier to bear, so thanks for that!

Rex Krueger

It's really the least I can do!

Rex Krueger

Thanks for being here for the jounrney!

Rex Krueger

It's so funny to get that stuff on camera.

Rex Krueger

It was stressful for me, too!

Rex Krueger

All good advice! The electrician comes this week to add service. You'll see more power tool stuff for sure.

Rex Krueger

Those two things will really ruin you rlife!

Rex Krueger

Wow, that's a level of detail I could never do!

Rex Krueger

This cost like 3x what I was expecting.

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you think so!

Rex Krueger

Literally nothing!

Rex Krueger

The pool noodle thing is a good tip!

Rex Krueger

Thank you! That's nice to hear.

Rex Krueger

I do feel much better about the space now.

Rex Krueger

Thank you! I'm excited, too.

Rex Krueger

I enjoyed one part: being done!

Rex Krueger

I didn't enjoy any part of it!

Rex Krueger

I sure doesn't feel like my basement!

Rex Krueger

You're entirely right about that!

Rex Krueger

I already owned the roller and other stuff.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Yup, those lights are 100% LED.

Rex Krueger

I actually do weld a bit. It's not that I don't know how to tackle the sound; it's that I've had too much other stuff to do. I do appreciate the advice. I'll get there.

Rex Krueger

Man, what a delight to hear that! Thank you.

Rex Krueger

I like the white, too!

Rex Krueger

I appreciate that attitude!

Rex Krueger

Holey Moley!!!

“Mission Creep”. More or less describes any home improvement project on my circa-1948 home. Post-WWII materials shortage so the exterior walls are 6”x6” mining timbers laid on their sides and nailed together. I’m not up on my nail sizes, but the ones I’ve seen are pretty hefty—about 1/4” in diameter. You need a sledge hammer. I had to remove part of a bathroom wall due to decades of shower surround leakage. Needed a gas-powered chain saw. When I was done, it was a room (bath) with a view—of Mount Timpanogoes.

Lee Stokes

"Men plan and God laughs." Testify Brother Rex! On a more serious note... it's good to see things getting back to some semblance of normal. My shop is still unfinished while the house is getting a makeover. The closest thing to a woodworking project that I've done is a pallet for our new bed. Since we remodeled the bedroom, we (of course) needed new mattresses (mission creep). Damned if mattresses keep getting thicker. This one was too tall for Yo to get into, so I made a quick pallet out of 2x2s and furring strips to replace the frame. I busted it out in about 2 hours. It's not perfect but it serves its purpose and nobody can see it, so who cares. What's the name of the paint color you used? Take care, Mike

Michael Bennett

Rex, its real life. I think I can appreciate this part since its how my projects end up going. You’ll get us there soon enough. Besides, here in Phoenix its too dang hot to work in my garage,so I’ll be happy watching you work in yours. All my best - Ron

Ron Halloff

That could easily be an action of mine. Meticulously prepping one wall for painting and the putting the paint on the wrong wall (either that or prepping the wrong wall). I can also relate to planning one small chore that becomes a giant chore that includes the whole house. Before you know it, you've replaced, painted and updated everything... By the way... Ever thought 'bout a green (or blue) wall? Nate can use that to give you any background he wants. Before you know it you'll be working on Hawaii without ever traveling there...

Frans van Ballegooijen

So glad Nate is feeling better. As I mentioned last week, I could watch your paint dry and still be happy for the video. Thank you for the update on the shop Rex. That white certainly make the difference. According to Murphy, any well planned project will always exceed the cost and time estimate by at least 5 days and $5,000. Thanks again and best wishes for a restful weekend and a productive week.

Matt Evans-Koch

Well done, Rex. I believe this will turn out to have been an investment in the long run: You’d start getting annoyed about the other walls, and they might have caused issues with colour balance etc. Now you know it’s not coming back to bite you. One question, though: Does this delay have any impact on your revenue? In other words; is it blocking you from doing billable work? Thanks for your videos and for keeping us informed! Highly appreciated!

Jon Johansen

Rex, I appreciate so much the level of honesty you are willing to go to.

Helge

Good stuff! I particularly like the economics behind the scenes as it was very insightful. No worries about the shop and thank you for keeping us informed.

Michael Simpson

That look on your face, when you realise that you just started painting the wrong wall : priceless and so recognisable. Must have had that look myself quite a few times, for instance when you realise you just cut off a piece of wood shorter than it should have been.

Wouter Engels

Wow, that was kinda stressful to watch! But it looks spectacular. I really feel that mission creep...

Kenneth Carlile

I know you’re a hand tool guy but I see not to the extent of selling your machine tools. In your future journeys in trying to reinvent yourself you might loop back into more power tool work. The electrical work I did in my shop made a big difference in convince. I had lots outlets spaced around the shop at three feet above the floor. I had a couple installed at the seven foot level for air circulation fans and cameras. The outlets next to work benches I had USB outlets installed. I use those all the time. Make sure you provide a circuit for a refrigerator. The availability of cool drinks is a must. I had several dedicated twenty amp circuits for the drill press, etc. and two 220V circuits at either end. I only have one tool that needs that voltage. You probably have more and a welder besides. The smartest thing I did was install ceiling drops. That allowed me to position tools in the middle of the space. In your case that would keep the power for the video stuff off the floor.

Richard C von Brecht

I feel your pain. My Joiners bench still isn't finished because of moving..... and painting....

John Morrison

Man, I painted just a tiny exposed brick wall in my basement shop a few months ago for better lighting, and that about drove me insane. So true what you said about all the little nooks and crannies to get into after the roller work. I got so OCD about it that I was getting into tiny little pinholes with one of my kids’ water color paint brushes, otherwise the were these tiny black “pepperings” all over the place. I love the wall now, but sheesh I give you props for getting that massive wall done. Looks amazing!

Aaron Wasielewski

Everything worthwhile in life takes longer and costs more... Anon.

Mark Petersen

It looks like the new workshop is coming along brill :)

Jim

Sprayers aren’t too costly. A Graco gun worked for me and it’s reasonably priced. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NHX6UWY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Richard C von Brecht

Looks great. Nothing is ever as simple as we first believe.

Kevin S Thomas

Pool noodles for the conduits, buy 1 4ft piece, split it down the length, and slip that on and move it along as you go. For the floor, Use a LARGE piece of cardboard, same deal, move it along as you do each segment. The space looks bright and clean and very very good for videography. Well done indeed. Love it.

William Allen

Stuff has to get done, when it has to get done, and now it is done, so congrats.

John Shufelt

Your journey is like mine and probably everyone… one thing always leads to another. If we find the final results acceptable, that is the reward.

Gerald Eddy

I must have missed that. It seems really dark in there though, even with the white paint. Maybe he just had better lighting for the cubic area of his basement.

Jeremy Denslinger

The shop looks amazing! It's crazy how just changing colors and freshing up the paint can completely transform a space! Excited to see more from the new shop!

david champlin

It's the journey, not the destination. Shop looks great. Hope you had some element of enjoyment while doing it.

Amy Holderness

ugh...I hate painting, hate the prep, hate the mess, hate the cleanup...but, you gotta do what you gotta do. Now it's done!

Rick Prosser

Oh, look, you're back in the basement. Except it's bigger . . . and brighter.

Mike Washburn

I believe he said on an earlier video that those are LED, didn't he?

Mike Washburn

Thirded, came here to say this. For rough, odd surfaces like this an airless spray gun is totally worth it. Cut the painting time in half or more. Easily rentable at Home Depot or a mom and pop place. Only thing I'm not sure of is if it works with the special masonry paint he's using. I don't see why not, but I'd check.

Andrew More

Yes Rex the outcome looks good. Think of the heart burn you would have if you only painted the wall. BTW I think the “old industrial look” is created to look that way, it’s not organic. Like a coffee shop in an old industrial site is the result of much work to retain that look.

Joseph Trepal

I totally agree. I can't seem to get good results rolling, so a sprayer it it for me!

Bradley Barth

Two words: spray painting.

Robert Rutledge

Rex, is that you painting random walls in my neighborhood? I have that mission creep syndrom too... I know how you felt. The paint looks way better than before.

Christian Pelchat

Oh, and Rex, there are LED tube bulbs you can replace those fluorescent bulbs with - there's two types - one type you remove the ballast, the other type uses the ballasts. I'd remove the ballasts, personally.

Jeremy Denslinger

I know you're not a welder... but Harbor Freight welding blankets hanging around as dividers and wall covering will help a LOT.

Jeremy Denslinger

May I indulge myself? I've already been up, not sleeping, for two hours, and I've been catching up around here finally. The whole shop move, start to finish this morning. I've been swept up in a rush of nostalgia - the old workbench, the original LRB (you come anywhere near my 7' LRB with that chainsaw, buddy, and I'm goona....) Me personally? I hate painting - viscerally hate in the core of the fibres of my soul hatred. And the projects I've done this spring have been small, attainable, and painted. And they've been pretty! I also hate cleaning. I spent a couple weekends this spring just clearing the clutter of the tiny corner of my garage I've set aside for workspace and it feels insignificant against a whole new shop. I watch the scope creep and think of the yak shaving you've gone through and it drives me a tiny bit crazy because I just want to do things again and not get caught up in the side quests all the time... And I think about it. It feels like we're really GOING somewhere. This is so great. I love the shop, I love the floor, I love the walls, I love the videos about making it happen. You say "Thanks for watching" every single video. Thanks for making these, Rex. This is really something special. I'm so very grateful to come along for the ride and be part of it. It's good for my mental health, too.

Mark Zaugg

The white looks much better than the gritty look imo. It´s important to feel good in your workspace and have things the way you like it. Looks really good also

Nikoloz Petelava

Thanks Rex, do what you need to. Building your shop is just as interesting as project work. TBH I must spend more time making storage, fittings & jigs for my shop than I do on “real” projects. It’s all good!

Kevin Brown

hehehehe Just one more thing .......
