Early Access Video: Moving into the New Shop

Friends:

Moving isn't much fun, but it makes for a good story!  This week, we're moving into the new shop and that's....an adventure. Fixing up the space, packing, and getting moved in took a LOT of work and I captured it all on tape.

You don't need to move shops; you can just watch me do it!

Happy Saturday!

Early Access Video: Moving into the New Shop

Comments

Congratulations on the new shop! Excited to see your new projects!

Well Rex, moving a shop or your house is nothing more than...work at any age!.

Dan Delie

Oh man, you filled in the forging area! Seriously, I don't know if you could have set up a forge and anvil (or even if you would want to) without asphyxiating yourself in that shop. but I always love it when you touch on blacksmithing in your videos.

Robert Dennett

Do you have a SCORE advisor? It’s a free service provided by a business partner of the US small business administration. Confidential counseling, help with business plan writing, marketing plans, advertising guidance, connections to your state’s Small Business Development Network for loans and grants, advice on employees and contractors, and more…. I hope that’s helpful!

Andrew Watt

Even with the help, my back was pretty sore!

Rex Krueger

This is only my 6th shop! You've got me beat. Moving shops wasn't so bad a few years ago, but I own a lot more stuff now.

Rex Krueger

Now that all the money's spent, I don't even miss it. Getting into that space fast and without hurting myself was worth more than money.

Rex Krueger

Well said.

Rex Krueger

I'm going to keep the handtool area much like it was in the basement. The other stuff is in the other side of the shop so I can use it or not as the project requires.

Rex Krueger

As of last week, I'm up to 16 lights (there were only 8 in this video) and I STILL need to hang more. It's a lot of space.

Rex Krueger

I was deeply relieved when those legs came off!

Rex Krueger

Thank you! It's only because of Patrons that I CAN hire these folks.

Rex Krueger

Thankfully I have only had to make 3 state moves but there were a few moves within the county before that.

Stephen Ellis

It's funny; 42 isn't old, but I really do feel my age. Even though I exercise and take care of myself, I just can't do the heavy physical labor I could do 10 years ago.

Rex Krueger

I've been there. OH is state number 4 for me and my family. Once we finally got settled here, all the moving around was worth it.

Rex Krueger

You're very kind to say I'm not fake! My own journey with woodwork was a lot like yours. I made a lot of "stuff" from wood before I really started woodworking.

Rex Krueger

Yeah, my "business model" is pretty interesting. It's an adventure keeping everything going, I'll tell you that for free.

Rex Krueger

It's nice to hear that you think I've made good decisions. I appreciate that.

Rex Krueger

Cleveland basements are damp! I think we'll leave it alone.

Rex Krueger

My back started aching when you and Brannon started cleaning up the basement. I almost cried when you cut the Roman bench in half. Did you save the pieces to make two visitor benches by adding new legs to the halves? The new shop is great. Looking forward to seeing the new layouts and the tips on finding a shop. I am in need of a larger shop to get my boat built. Take care, keep your back well and have a good weekend.

Matt Evans-Koch

I’ve moved shops 7 times in the past 14 years, and it sucked every time. I’ve always done it myself, and I’m not sure if I would hire it out or not.

Austin V Papp

Time, money, hassle, choose which you value most. Be VERY honest with yourself. Look at how long it takes you to do certain projects. Oh, then there are 2 other factors: spousal approval factor and divorce costs. I've seen divorces over less. That little extra spent on hiring a pro for things you don't do on a regular basis and aren't trained for disappear instantly when a pro is done in a fraction of the time and your other half is happy and you're not injured.

Tom Manseau

If you can keep your head when all about you are loosing theirs.... Then you're not moving. (Apologies to Kipling)

John Morrison

Great to see you getting into a bigger space! I'm curious to see how the layout will change compared to the basement shop (will you keep your chisels in a similar spot, are you going to have benches in similar locations relative to other tools, etc.)

Robert Quinn

The new shop is great. I’m sure you noticed there’s still dark spots and you are waiting to finish spotting your benches and dare I say it your machinery. The one thing that changed my former garage into a wood shop was putting in twelve LED lights in the 440 square foot space. It didn’t hurt to cover the walls with with white melamine panels. I look forward to going in there now.

Richard C von Brecht

I love the bit with the English Joiner's Bench :^D

Thomas Hverring

Well, I completely understand hiring to do the things you can’t, won’t, or don’t want to do! Congrats on the move!

Gerald Eddy

Thanks for the update. Good choices on hiring everyone. I can see it made the move quite successful. By the way you're not too old....just wait....30 years. Then you are! LOL I'm almost 63 and chose to work a job that requires me to do heavy lifting every day, I still feel young. Looking forward to the next video.

John Hiemstra

Thanks for the update on the new shop and the struggles moving a shop can be. I'm going to have to figure that one out soon when I make state to state move. Again. 🙃🙃🙃

Stephen Ellis

Thanks for the new shop update. I'm super excited to see what's in store in the future with your channel. I absolutely LOVE watching you and learning from you. You are the one who really got me into woodworking using hand tools. I had already been into working with wood but never actually REALLY got into it until watching a video of yours. I love that your not "FAKE." You show your viewers that you're a human with flaws like the rest of us.

Jennessa Lynam

Nicely done. I don’t expect I’ll ever need a woodworking shop of this size, but it’s fascinating to see the process you went through. I look forward to the future analysis of the finances — I volunteer as an advisor for SCORE and I’m deeply interested in your business model (patreon + YouTube) as a model for other creators and content producers in fields as diverse as weaving and sewing to metalwork and pottery.

Andrew Watt

Thanks for the update. Looks like you've already made several good decisions (flooring, lighting, and especially the movers). Best of luck as you continue this journey.

Kevin S Thomas

Once again, Good Luck!!! You have been in for several months now so things must really be cooking! Now you have home basement renovation to do for the family.
