Early Access Video: I'm MOVING to a new shop!

Friends:

It's been a year of big announcements and today is no different. After 5 years in my basement, I have leased a commercial building and I'm moving!

This is a HUGE change for me. I've only ever had this business from home and having my own building is new territory in every way. I admit, I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing, but the new shop will bring more space, better filming conditions, and opportunities for new projects that you just can't do in a basement.

Just like always, Patrons get the big news FIRST. No one outside my family even knows this is happening. I'm super excited to share it with you first!

See you on the other side!

Early Access Video: I'm MOVING to a new shop!

Comments

What with no floor-mounted power outlets?!?!Nice shop, Rex.

Sam Marcum

Aww, man! You filled in the space for a forge! Seriously, congratulations on the new space. Looking forward to seeing what you create there.

Robert Dennett

Looks like a nice new shop. Can't wait to see you move in.

Dan Delie

This is great for you! I just realized there was comments for these videos. Haha!

Bryce Carver

Thanks, Shane!

Rex Krueger

I'll do my best!

Rex Krueger

Welcome! Thanks for your kind words!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Good for you Rex, the new shop space looks amazing. Keep up the good work

The Super-wrench Garage

Just watched it, and just joined! Looking forward to seeing what you'll be up to with all that space.

Rick Henderson

Congrats Rex. Big things ahead!!

Alan Smith

So excited for this! I’m sure you’ll maintain the character of the channel we’ve grown so fond of, even in a bigger space. All the best!

Ken Verleye

Congratulations Rex. This space should make it far easier and far more enjoyable for you to to work and film. Burn out sucks, so I am glad that you have taken steps to get past it and revitalise yourself. Mental health is everything. Can't wait for the fit-out and other great videos and projects. Love ya work

Shane Thomas

Congratulations, I’m excited for your new content.

Ean Lake

Super excited for you!!!! (And us).

Josh G

Congratulations Rex, I am sure your content will get even better. Your latest videos were already excellents. It will also help you having a "wall" between home and workplace.

Christian Pelchat

Congratulations, Rex! It looks like a great space for you. I'm sure you'll have no problem multitasking shoots on different sets in the new shop. I predict your creativity will return to you to fill up the big vacuum of the new space. Looking forward to seeing what comes of it!

Scott Alderfer

Congrats on the move Rex! I’m looking forward to what you’re going to be doing in the new space. Be mindful of your health, getting close to being burned out last year I know all to well how hard it is to change old patterns that lead to it. Hopefully this shop brings you the change that you need and the joy into your work!

Otto van Biessum

I made the comment before I watched the video, so I'm just happy you mentioned the dryer and washer yourself 😄 And you're right about how it feels when you're self-employed, because telling yourself that you deserve something feels like making an excuse when taking an extra piece of cake. But just remember how much you do for so many people! It may sound silly that some guy on YouTube can be so important to people, but your videos and the community have been of the greatest importance to me and still is. So you deserve several workshops 😄

Thomas Hverring

I'm sure it will! When you will go down for the laundry, you will not check if the glue dried. ;-)

Pierre-Olivier Fineltin

That's a really encouraging thing to say! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I think I'll keep up with all of that!

Rex Krueger

That's really encouraging! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

That's SUPER nice of you to say!

Rex Krueger

I'm glad you think so!

Rex Krueger

I do feel a little lighter already!

Rex Krueger

Probably not a plane till, but probably a simple tool chest!

Rex Krueger

That's very nice of you to say! Thank you1

Rex Krueger

I will keep on truckin!

Rex Krueger

Wow! What a thoughtful and encouraging comment. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I'm excited, too! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

It's also a little intimidating/.

Rex Krueger

It's possible!

Rex Krueger

I bet that canoe is an amazing project. I feel like I've seen pictures of it.

Rex Krueger

I haven't seen it, but I know stumpy has been doing some new stuff that really worked for him. I'll go watch it.

Rex Krueger

I promise to get into all those details. They're actually very interesting.

Rex Krueger

I'm very much looking forward to being above ground!

Rex Krueger

Good point. I think I'll do that right now.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

In video production, there's always an element of just keeping up with professional standards. As the level of production on YouTube in general goes up, most channels need to invest in better picture or sound to stay relevant. I don't care much about video quality in DIY stuff, but very amateurish visuals alienate potential viewers. We're going to improve things....but we'll keep it subtle.

Rex Krueger

The acoustics of the space suck. Tons of reverb and flutter-echo. Just last week, after the tools and stuff came in, the sound improved a bunch...but not enough. I'll be working on that for a while.

Rex Krueger

That extra promotion is deeply appreciated. It's the kind of advertising you can't buy!

Rex Krueger

I'm sure we'll have more of that!

Rex Krueger

John and I have a pretty different style, don't we? I wouldn't know what to do with his 10K sq ft shop. Still makes for fun viewing.

Rex Krueger

It is, but parking is a problem. It's a possibility, for sure.

Rex Krueger

I appreciate that!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

What a lovely sentiment! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

It's a fun challenge, that's for sure!

Rex Krueger

William: Just in the last month, I've made both a stool and a shelf. Both small; both made with simple hand-tools. I'm also doing the beginner lathe series with the cheapest and most basic tools I can find. As to projects, I haven't done as much because of exhaustion and persistent old injuries. These are both things that I hope to alleviate with the new shop.

Rex Krueger

My wife and I feel pretty strongly about keeping her off social media. That being said, she's DYING to be in more videos.

Rex Krueger

It's not easy to feel like you "deserve" things when you're self-employed. Thanks for the boost!

Rex Krueger

I know the feeling. Seeing my own basement all emptied out is WEIRD.

Rex Krueger

Thanks so much!

Rex Krueger

What is a Rhinegeist tee?

Rex Krueger

It's nice to hear someone articulate the hobby/job distinction. I love my work, but it's still work and I need a little distance from it.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I'm with you on the schedule thing. I didn't mention it in the video, but one of the reasons I chose this shop is that I can WALK to it. It's that close.

Rex Krueger

We all want to get better at filmmaking around here and the new space should open up a lot of possibilities for better visuals.

Rex Krueger

Appreciated!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I've never heard that saying before! I'm hoping very much that work will now stay at work.

Rex Krueger

I hear you! I wish I could say that nothing would change, but I'm actually hoping things WILL change. But along with new machinery and bigger space, I hope to use the new space just like I used the old one: to build approachable projects with affordable tools.

Rex Krueger

Don't worry; all future videos will be in the new space. I'm starting to set up this week.

Rex Krueger

No joke: I once built a client piece that was too big to come up my stairs. I had to saw it in half. Massive drag.

Rex Krueger

Yeah, me too!

Rex Krueger

Thanks so much for the encouragement!

Rex Krueger

What a nice thing to say! I appreciate that.

Rex Krueger

Thanks! I'll have more on this really soon.

Rex Krueger

I'll have more videos soon!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Yay! It's great news. I am sure your videos can only get better in the new shop.

stlmch

I hope the move went well. What drew me to the channel most was: - showing us techniques in a physical way, especially on the Low Roman Bench - having enough detail in the videos that I *could* do it without the plans, but making me want to buy the plans because the video was so great - the boot-strapping from nothing to a functional joinery shop. I would *love* to see that continue!

Conor Mow-Lowry

Congratulations, Rex! I’m just chiming in with the others saying 1) Don’t worry about the move. As long as you deliver the same quality, we’re all here - and probably more, and 2) I am really looking forward to seeing your new stuff. It’s gonna be awesome, now that you have more flexibility and inspiration!

Jon Johansen

I will say, I feel like better video gear always makes how-to style stuff easier for me to watch. It can be frustrating when the important part isn't lit well, or the angle doesn't show the technique well!

Nic Beurskens

You make some great points with those other creators, but I think they had different goals in mind. I'm willing to bet the shop move will be closer to Uri Tuchman's move, where getting out of his house made for better content because there was peace at home!

Nic Beurskens

That's awesome news Rex, I'm looking forward to what this new space will bring to what is already an amazing channel :)

Jim

Sweet… that is a great space

Shawn D

So happy for you buddy. Your mental health is so important. You already look happier with more spring in your step. Look forward to more fantastic videos from you. Best wishes.

The Deaf Maker

Looking forward to watching the new shop set up. Maybe a plane till build? 😉

Duncan Haigh

I picked up this too. :)

Csongor Halmai

Congratulation, Rex, this really opens a huge set of new possibilities for you channel. I am eagerly waiting for what videos you will produce here. :)

Csongor Halmai

Hi Rex, don;t worry about your new location, your dedicated viewers won;t mind and I am sure it will all pay off. You offer more areas which will allow also new audiences. I don't think repetition is a bad thing at all. Sometimes its simple good to review what you have learned and digest the knowledge and skills more. Your enthusiasm, dedication, humour and your comfortable interactions will always be welcome by most viewers. Keep on truckin!!

Paul Mouradian

I have a basement handtool only shop as my hobby space, and a beautiful 1800 sq/ft commercial shop with all the power tool amenities (sliding table saw, moulder, 16" jointer, 20" planer, ect.) I love both for very different reasons. Congratulations, and good luck! As an aside, I think the idea of holding yourself back is very silly, and I would encourage anyone who thinks that something you do moving forward in a larger space is unattainable needs to be reaching rather than looking for content at their current skill level. I have always strived to associate with people who know more than me in any given discipline and try to grow to that point. That being said, rarely has any creator I've watch on YouTube over the past 14 years or so outpaced my own growth, but rather I have ended up outpacing the adaptation of the channels, and moved on. I think looking for content that is where you are currently is a great way to pat yourself on the back about what you can do, rather than being inspired toward what you could one day attain. Keep it up, Rex, love seeing the growth!

Austin V Papp

Wow! A new, bigger shop. Fathers Day, your birthday and Christmas came all at one time and early. Congratulations Rex. Looking forward to seeing the new shop come together and the new projects you come up with. This Spring and Summer are going to be exciting. Take care and have an exciting week ahead.

Matt Evans-Koch

Congratulations, having more space must feel so good...

Otakar Schön

Yeah. I was going to ask. Some of the sound from the new shop is really phasey, almost ringing in places. I hope that was just a quirk of the recording/post and not the acoustics of the space itself.

Mark Thornton

Great new Rex. I think I can see a collaboration with the "Vancouver Carpenter" in the future...

Frans van Ballegooijen

It is always nice to have space to do large setups. Even in my 30x50 shop, I have limited space for large projects as my lawnmower and other stuff lives in there as well. Right now I have a cedar strip canoe that needs glassing taking up the largest part of what should be free space. Congrats on your move. Can't wait for some vids from the new place.

Robert Lunsford

1st, congrats! 2nd, you were mentioning about the slow down in new traffic @ YouTube. James Hamilton aka Stumpy Nubs just posted a video on that very subject: clickbait. I'm guessing that you probably have seen it but if you haven't, it's definitely worth a look: https://youtu.be/e1dNP3Heejc

Tom Manseau

Congratulations on the move. I definitely think this will help with burnout. Separation of home life and work life is essential to maintain a healthy balance mentally. I do have to say that I am a bit jealous of your move, because I have a small basement shop that is a shared space with all the same friends (furnace, washer, dryer, sink, etc). But I am just a hobby tool restorer/woodworker, so I can't justify getting a separate shop space. I greatly look forward to the moving video and especially the video on shop economics. Congrats again.

Brendan Langord

Fantastic news! I wish I could get out of my basement… but will when we move to Portugal snd will see whats available there. When I was in art school I sublet a small studio space and it was very freeing! Congrats!

Gerald Eddy

Awesome, can't wait to see where things go. You may want to consider blurring out the company name on the building behind you around the 4:50 mark before this goes like on YouTube.

Chris Evans

Congrats, Rex!

A1BASE

Oh by the way if she’ll let you, continue to provide cameos of your daughter. (Probably, no way!) I’m a dad of a daughter. At her age now she could be your sister but it is cool to see her interact with me back in the day.

Richard C von Brecht

Looks awesome, congratulations. Can't wait for your new content.

Kevin S Thomas

You will really enjoy the roll up door - I know I do! I have noticed that a lot of youtubers seem to transition into becoming a lot more concerned - or at least putting more time/money/effort into cameras, lighting, angles, etc... I never watched early youtube maker vids and thought they needed better gear - or later I thought the videos were much better with new gear. It has always been about the content and not thinking of the videography. May just be lack of awareness on my part. Could be I do apprecieate the quality upgrade, but don't notice because they are subtle changes? Good luck regardless. Looking forward to the new, (better) vids.

Rick Prosser

Congratulations! I look forward to seeing what you can do in there. It makes me happy when content creators I love are able to make obvious growth and expansion to their business. If you are interested in the opinion of those of us who are not you or your family (all of us!), my only hope and request would be that making use of the larger space is still done in a very minimalistic, approachable way. While I would still watch your videos, it would be a very different feel if you all of a sudden built a massive walnut french cleat wall to use as a backdrop for all your planes, saws, and tools (which is not something your average viewer could do)! I watch you because you make me (as a beginner/novice) feel like I can do the things you do! (And on a very practical video-production-type note, I hope you'll put a ton of acoustic treatment up! Some of those clips had some really harsh overtones and frequencies in them. :) ) That's all. I'm very happy for you and looking forward to this!

Brandon Daggerhart

Good luck in the new shop. I always wanted to set up in a commercial building to restore VWs or have a full wood / metal shop. At my age and issues I have here at home I'll stick with my two shops and make them the best I can. Basements don't exist here since they would quickly fill up with water and become an indoor swimming pool. As to burn out on YouTube I understand that as well. I burned out in 2020 and with less than 250 subscribers I doubt that I am missed. I promote your channel on all of the Facebook groups I am in and on my own FB page as well.

Skully Wood and Metal

While I am excited to see what the new shop brings. I hope this gives you the opportunity to do more of what made the channel so great when I first started watching. Making good quality tools right in your shop. Last tool you made was the workbench and before that was the sawhorse. I would like to see more in the true beginner series or vise squad.

Boney Boards

Looking forward to all the new possibilities. It’s also good to see you meeting your goals. And I know you won’t become the next John Malecki… although it would be fun to hear you say something about punching the day in the face just once.

Johnny Mercer

That’s fantastic! Can’t wait to see all you figure out in it. Big enough for classes too, eventually?

George Page

So exciting. Congrats

Tim Costello

Congratulations!

Kenneth Carlile

You don't have to sell me. I work in my basement (smaller than yours) and am now green with envy. Congratulations. Looking forward to the new content and what you create in this wonderful new space.

Amy Holderness

Good luck Rex! Been enjoying the teasers of a bunch of your new video series, glad you’re going to have the space to do them right. Can’t wait incorrect and new shops are amazing

Evan Van Dyke

I am not an expert, but I think that the reason you have not gotten a lot of new viewers is because you are not doing the things that brought me to be a viewer--lots of small projects mixed with a few large projects. You used to make tools and I don't remember the last one you did (maybe the router plane?). I would like to see an easy way to make a bow sander, maybe a pump drill (maybe you can show whether trying to turn the brass weight in a wood lathe is a good idea--I assume not, but would be interested in the analysis), and some handles for files might be useful (you may have already done that with handles for screw drivers, I cannot remember). You did one cabinet as I recall, but it would be nice to have some furniture forensics on why different types of cabinets are made differently (e.g., why the high legs on a sideboard and how to keep it stable? How is a cabinet that goes under a counter different from one that goes over? why is a gun cabinet different from a saw till? what is the tradeoff between drawer thickness in an apothecary cabinet and strength?) A better understanding of different tables for different circumstances (e.g. why are there some tables with a flip up panel to fit against a wall and others with a flip down? why do some tables have the whole tabletop flip up and legs fold to the side--how is this done in a way that the table can stay in the room without looking bad? What makes one type of taper make a table look graceful and another make a table look strong?) You are a smart guy and there are times where your intellect shines through and offers insight. There are other videos where you are showing mechanics and skills (maybe some additional explanation of what practice a woodworker should be doing and how to tell if things are getting better--the examples you gave of how to practice with a chisel were great). I would also be interested in when something that looks decorative is really a practical advantage and when it is not. I hope the new shop gives you the opportunity to pursue some of these things.

William Fishburne

I’m going to miss the basement and it’s randomness. I can understand the need for more space but doing your videos from home introduced a certain makeshift originality. Regardless, enthusiasm is the key ingredient in your material so keep mixing it up.

Richard C von Brecht

Great news! Is the washer and dryer coming with you or will they stay in the basement? They are an important part of your backdrop, you know. (Just kidding! I'm so happy for you, you really deserve it!)

Thomas Hverring

I wish you luck, Rex. I admit to feeling a little sentimental about your basement, but in this life, things change. See you there!

Dean Wight

That's Great Rex! Best of luck.

warren stockwell

Well done Rex. Looking forward to the switch. Love the Rhinegeist tee.

James Carey

Congratulations! Very exciting. I am happy for you and your team. I am glad you bring up the burnout and mental health aspects, because it helps keep the daydreaming of doing what you are doing in perspective, for I need to keep this as a hobby. I do find that I do way more woodworking during good weather when my unheated garage is the shop and not my basement. (Which being in Lakewood, Ohio looks amazingly similar to yours.). Best of luck and congratulations again.

Robert Bullock

Love to see the future shop take shape, Rex.

Laura Worninger

Wonderful Growth. Big step for sure! Hope it's not too far from home, commuting can become a really big pain. One benefit of working from home, you will miss being close to wife and kids and a stocked refrigerator. One piece of advice, make a schedule of work hours and days and stick to it. If it's that close, get a bicycle and use it to and from for some exercise.

Marc Barash

Congratulations. You're clearly already having fun playing with different camera angles. I was full on laughing at the garage door opening bit.

Jason Sharp

Congratulations!

Bradley Barth

Congratulations.

Andrew Watt

Change of grass makes the calves happy... and the old bulls too. When you work from home, you keep your work at home. The balance is surely more stable now.

Pierre-Olivier Fineltin

Well done Rex. Hope it goes well, and it is the natural progression of successful things. Just some of my thoughts for what they are worth; when Paul Sellers moved into his new large shop with small section cornered off to simulate a shed, I lost interest. When AVE on YouTube got a big shop, and put large lathe and milling machine equip in and started playing classical music over his machine work, I lost interest in most of his content. Completely unrelatable. When Jomboy became a big deal, the content changed for me. But definitely can relate to the isolation aspect; this will be a great move for that, and it is your life. I hope it works out for you, and the new found energy will translate into interesting and good humoured content. Fyi I really enjoy your forensics on older furniture, that is really interesting investigation of the real historic craft and full of ideas for projects.

Going Noah

Good luck! We're here for you too Rex. Looking forward to the first video. Don't wait until it's perfect to film there. It will be interesting to see your transition.

Ron Halloff

Fantastic! I dream of a bigger shop. Right now I have a large project for a customer that is ready for final assembly but the space that it will occupy needs work so it’s not ready. This project ( and recovery from much needed reconstructive surgery) have me stopped cold. Space is an absolute necessity and I’m glad that you have it. Keep up the great work!

Michael Gross

Awesome news, look forward to see this evolution. Particularly interested to seeing how you might incorporate machining.

Todd Maurer

Congratulations on the new shop!!! I also happy about how you are thinking about how the new large space will affect the soul of the channel. I basically learned the fundamentals of power tool woodworking from Steve Ramsey’s channel and 10 years later, the fundamentals of hand tools from yours. I do think, that the simplicity of the presented shop helps a newcomer to the channel with little to no experience see what can be don’t without a 10,000 sq ft shop. This is not to say that having a large space is bad at and is really the dream for your audience as well. Again congratulations on the new shop! PS I’m looking forward to the metal work content

Michael Falbo

This is turning out to be a big year for the channel! Congratulations for all the good work. May we enjoy its fruits for many years to come.

Tsani Rósenov Sábev

Congratulations, can’t wait to see the set up.

joseph severson

That's incredible news! Looking forward to seeing the new digs!

Roger A Tubbs

Awesome news, congratulations!
