Early Access Video: Turn a Bowl From Firewood

Friends:

It's a new month and we've got a bunch of great videos for you. First up, let's get back to our introduction to woodturning.

I'm still not totally sure about this little Wen lathe I bought last year. It's affordable, but is it really good enough for the beginning turner? Is it big enough? Does it have enough power?

This week, we'll put it to the test by turning a complete wooden bowl from a rough hunk of green wood. This is the most demanding use of any lathe and it's going to tell us a lot about this little machine.

I've got a bunch more turning videos in the works, but feel free to drop a comment and let me know what YOU want me to cover. I'm always looking for good ideas from my Patrons. (Oh, and I know you want me to do a spring-pole lathe. I will....after the 2 feet of snow in my yard melts.)

Stay warm, y'all!

Thank you. I needed the kick in the pants to start turning again. One never knows the beauty hidden in wood until you start to turn. I love it!

looking good hope to see more turning videos very nice change from hatchets - I am not good with hatchets and after the one project I did using them I avoid them - I bought your book but didn't get too far in it because of the concentration on using hatchets.

Thank you Rex for this video. I have been interested in turning but have never found the need for it in the boat and cabinet work I do. But after seeing you do the bowl, I think it might be time to get started. Have a great week and keep your toes warm.

I know it's been done but I wonder what your take would be on a simple diy lathe made of wood. I'd like to try one for turning small items like nobs, handles and maybe pens. Could be drill or even treadle powered. Seems like an OK small production idea and I'd be curious what you think.

I’m never going look at fire wood the same way again. I’ve already discovered you can join branches trimmed from neighborhood trees into a charcuterie board. This just adds to that possibility.

Richard C von Brecht

Great video as usual. Very informative. I am really looking forward to the spring-pole lathe.

I would like to see a discussion of turning tools different types, what they are used for, needed tools to start.

Boney Boards

My neighbor trimmed some big limbs off of an oak tree, I made several green bowls. I also make stuff from cedar (not ideal) and Cypress cutoff limbs.

This is very timely for me as I'm just getting started with bowl turning. I especially liked that copper/epoxy idea. I noticed something I learned from another turner that you might want to mention in future videos. When mounting the faceplate on the headstock you held the handwheel and threaded the piece onto the spindle. This other turner told me that you should always hold the work piece stable and turn the handwheel. His reasoning was that if you have a heavy piece it's possible to cross-thread the spindle mount and damage the threads, which would require dressing with a file or possibly even replacing that part. If you are turning the handwheel it's easier to feel the threads catching so you can back it out and adjust your angle. A new turner with an irregular piece might not notice that the threads are out of alignment and damage their threading.

Awesome, I look forward to your wood turning videos!

Great video Rex! I'm really looking forward to this turning series.
