Announcing Workbench Session # 6: Peter Follansbee

Friends:

I’m delighted to announce our final Workbench Session of 2021. On December 23rd at 2:00 PM EST, we will have the pleasure of hosting Mr. Peter Follansbee!

If you watch my videos, you know Peter is a huge inspiration for the work I do. He uses green wood and fairly basic tools to create some of the finest 17th Century reproduction furniture. If you know what a joint stool is, it’s probably because of Peter.

There are plenty of details in the video, but please note the day and time. It’s on the 23rd to allow for the holiday and Peter doesn’t have artificial light in his shop, so we’re meeting at 2pm while there’s still daylight.

Peter will be demonstrating period carving techniques in oak and there will be a Q and A at the end. I’ve created a Discourse Discussion Thread where you can post your favorite videos, pictures, and photos of Peter’s work. You can ask questions for me to ask him and get educated about Peter’s work.

I’ll see many of you in the livestream and the recorded version will be ready as soon as possible (probably the next day; these are big files).

We’re ending the year with a bang. I hope you’re excited, because I am!

It's right up on the Discourse. Easy.

Got my idiot hat on. I'm a member at the 7 dollar level, yet I'm having trouble viewing the recorded session with Follansbee. How might I be more successful?

Benjamin it totally right and may I add that the rise of cabinet-making as a distinct trade make dried wood more desirable. The dovetail, which is necessary in most cabinet work really requires dry wood. So even before the kiln, increasingly sophisticated construction techniques made dried wood a must. For more on this (fascinating) topic, I recommend Jeffrey Greene's _American Furniture of the 18th Century_.

Kiln drying wood gets the board to market faster. So it is cheaper. Material cost is usually the most expensive part of anything. Green woodworking has a number of stop-and-wait-for-the-wood-to-dry points.

I have been watching Mr. Follansbee for the last year and am absolutely amazed how he builds and carves furniture. The historical background that he presents is also amazing. Looking forward to this Workbench session. Thank you Rex.

Hey Tod, there will be a link posted here on Patreon roughly 48 hours before the stream. Make sure you have your "Tier" set to $7 for access to the live stream, or $5 for the recording.

Question: If green wood was the standard for most of history, why did drying become so popular? Popular to the point of woodworkers being frightened to work on a piece if it's not dried to the right level. I am excited about this session.

Rex, your enthusiasm is infectious. It really shows in this video. That and the depth of your research is what separates you from other guys. It’s entrained my interest into areas that I wouldn’t otherwise care about such as green woodworking. I’m looking forward to this video.

I'll have to watch this one. Can't get enough information about the joined stool. Would like to ask him who we might want to follow who he admires. Which instructional information might we want to read or view? Thanks for doing this. You know I admire him and follow his work.

I'm looking so much forward to this! Peter Follansbee is a truly astounding woodworker! I may not be able to watch it live, though, but I'll live (wow, word play!). 2 PM EST is 8 PM here—and the 23rd is what we call Little Christmas Eve, since our Christmas Eve is on the 24th, and it's the typical relaxing evening before the less so relaxing evening :^D But we'll see. Maybe I can talk my GF into watching it? Hardly ...

I'm dense. I couldn't join the workbench session because I didn't know how and didn't see any link or email. How do I get in? Thanks.
