Early Access Video: Last Minute Christmas Gifts

Friends:

This time of year we all need holiday gifts. I usually make a lot of presents for friends and family, but I'm bad at planning and I often leave things to the last minute. If you're like me, you might need some quick, inexpensive gifts you can make yourself.

I've collected a bunch of the best fast presents I've made over the years and this video should give you plenty of ideas for gifts you can make in time for the holidays.

In other news, we are wrapping up post-production on the new knock-down workbench videos and I'll be able to offer you a sneak peek next week.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Me , It's wood ,can't bare to throw it away.

That's a great idea,Terry! I didn't even bother with lot of sanding, as the thing, if used often (as mine is) develops a quick "patina" that ages it quickly. The only thing I did finish wise, was to spray a coat of polyurethane on it before tossing it on the pile. Some of the kids did sand theirs before painting, but it was all decent 1x6 or 1x8 stock.

Rex , On the bootjack , in the throat put some velvet on the sides to protect your $300 pair of boots !

We did a secret Santa this year on the forum. Instigated by Brian "Boneyboards" Boney, lots of people joined. I just finished packing my submission. And yes, there is a scrap-wood and bits project in there. Not from the video, but there is next year. Or Mothers days. Or birthdays. Or random occasions. Nice ideas there. link: https://forum.woodworkforhumans.com/t/secret-santa-2021-any-interest/11592

Eloque

You're very welcome!

I just can't bring myself to throw out chunks of hardwood. I can't do it!

Rex Krueger

Good luck! May your scrap-bin runneth over.

Rex Krueger

A couple of hundred?! That's very impressive! So much wood saved from the trash!

Rex Krueger

I don't actually have a boot brush, but that is a good idea!

Rex Krueger

I never thought of that, but it's a fine idea!

Rex Krueger

I do to, especially little people!

Rex Krueger

It's a surprisingly good gift!

I'm a pretty bad procrastinator!

Those are some amazing ideas, thank you Rex :)

Those card holders are perfect for those hardwood off cuts that that you kept forever and sit in the bottom of the scrap box. Better than making them into sanding blocks. I’ve made them into pen and pencil holders before but who uses nice manual writing tools these days.

Richard C von Brecht

Thank you Rex for the ideas. Have to go through the scraps and the plans and see what matches. Santa might arrive on time this year.

I think that Rex didn't show the boot brush (also a pretty easy project) that he probably has by the back door to get them a bit cleaner. At our house you wipe boots with brush, then step inside and remove boots. I think if Rex was a true master of procrastination he would have released this video on the 24th :)

I use my scraps to make simple small wood toys to give to the Christmas Stocking Fund here in Vancouver. They are always delighted as a lot of toys given are cheap plastic and are often broken Christmas Day. My toys will likely be around a long time and I usually show up with a box of about 50pcs. I used to work as a demonstrator for Delta Machinery and did demos in Ronas and HDs and noticed that the other demonstrators left a lot of scrap lumber behind which the stores threw out so I asked the store people to keep the wood for me as it often had a couple of small cuts form a jigsaw or such and there was a LOT of wood left behind. I went out in the parking lot and made some rough sketches of car shapes, cut them out, routed the edges, put 4 wheels on them and that was it. I have given a couple hundred of these toys and still have enough for another 50 lr s

I think I would need two bootjacks. After taking of the first boot, the bootjack will be covered in mud and dirt. Transfer that to my sock and still spread it through the house. My wife would love that ;-)

The business card holder could be easily modified to hold a cell phone! Pretty neat idea.

Kevin Lundquist

great love to build things for people

Robin Trance

Thanks Rex! I've got a mate who I reckon will love the boot jack!

Martin Hartley

Just in time for the anti-procrastinator!
