Patron Extra: A Clip from Roy Underhill

Friends:

I hope everyone is recovering from their post-holiday stupor! I admit that my wife and I were disgruntled at the alarm this morning. After just 4 days of sleeping in, we had gotten used to the extra sleep.

Regardless, the work goes on.

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of Hosting Roy Underhill for the Workbench Sessions and we had a lively chat on so many topics. We wanted to share a clip of that conversation with all the Patrons.

Listen in as Roy describes how he taught himself how to blast with dynamite by reading a book review and then simply buying a case of explosives. Truly, the man defines the DIY spirit!

Enjoy!

This just makes me wanna go on Amazon, to order a case of dynamite and blast some rocks out of the road. I just think hope my neighbors will appreciate my efforts ;-)

Missed the original Workbench session. Still haven't had time to watch the entire talk so this was nice to see. It seems that every other generation goes through this cycle of wanting to step off the race track and take things a little slower. Maybe it is time to postpone the race for a while and let everyone move at a slower pace. Thanks for the clip Rex.

This hobby is getting dangerous: chisels, saws and now dynamite. And they don't sell dynamite on Amazon

I grew up in the 50's & 60's on a farm in SW Indiana and was "taught" by my father to blast out tree stumps using dynamite (and sometimes with added ammonium nitrate). When I was old enough to drive, he sent me to a hardware store at the county seat to buy a case of dynamite, roll of fuse, and a box of caps. Times have changed!

Roy is a rare gem to say the least. What I would give to sit with him and a pot of coffee and just talk. We are all part of a small group of "doers", that is people that actually DO something. I think it has always been that way, this 10% group. Oddly a lot of us are left handed which also is a 10% group. I think most of us, myself included, are self taught with reading etc and sometimes just doing it. I would not have it any other way.

It's good to see Roy Underhill, and to hear parts of his story about he came to produce the series which I stumbled upon as a young(er) man and fell in love with. To this day, I think all I really aspire to is to have a shop much like the one he had in that series where I could while away quiet hours working slowly and carefully. I'm glad to see you embracing that spirit in your own series, Rex. Thank you for honoring Roy and making that connection for people like me.
