A Big Announcement--Just for Patrons!

Friends:

I'm delighted to announce a major new Patron reward: The Workbench Sessions digital lecture series. All the details on this new series are in the video.

The first installment will be this Thursday, July 29th @ 4:00 PM, EST.

As I explain in the video, this reward will be for $5 and $7 members only and starting Monday, new Patrons will need to sign up for at least the $5 level.

None of this affects current $2 members. You can remain at the $2 level and still get all the rewards you currently enjoy.

If you would like to upgrade your membership to take advantage of the Workbench Sessions there's a great little article that shows you how to easily make the change.

I'm very excited about this new chapter in the story of our community. Thanks for being here with me. If you have questions or comments, please share them below. I always read every  Patron comment.

Rex Krueger

Hey Rex, I have not been able to access your plans as a patreon member. What am I missing? Your 'Discourse' link fails to connect. Specifically, I would like the Joiner's Bench Bundle now. I finally have time to build it and am hindered without the plans. I guess I will build it without since now I have time but this is concerning.

Mannfried Funk

I am having the same problem, have you been able to resolve it yet?

Craig Barton

I just upgraded, and for some reason I have password problems every time I log on ??? Is that a common problem?

Howard Tuckey

Where is the post for $5 tier?

Scott Fujan

Tomorrow!!!

Rex Krueger

I think I just upgraded to the $7.00 Tier. I need some live Rex Krueger humor!

Iron Regimenti

Howard, you are definitely a supporter. You wouldn't be able to leave a comment here if you were not. You support me and Mike. You're at the $5 level with me.

Rex Krueger

Thank you! Any yes, everyone $5 and up gets the recording, too.

Rex Krueger

Man, you just made my day!

Rex Krueger

Just bumped up to the $5 tier. I love your channel, and it's a good investment. Excites to see the new workbench sessions.

Midwestern Scout

I definitely wasn't trying to shame anyone here. Nic hit it right on the head. Some people game the system and could walk away with his entire library of plans for $2 instead of paying the normal price for each plan. When I signed on as a patron, I knew I was in it for the long haul. But as I started downloading, I recognized the flaw in the system. Even as he currently has it set up tho', the flaw remains.

Michael Bennett

I probably won’t be able to attend the live sessions either, however I have still bumped up to the $7 level because I want to support your work! For me, this has become a life changing direction and showed me my path for the upcoming years! Thank you so much!

Gerald Eddy

I hope they are, as I'm going to miss them as well. But I think I know what I screwed up, Rex.

Howard Tuckey

Are these sessions recorded as well? 4pm on a Thursday puts me right in middle of my workday. FYI, $7.00 member from the get-go!

Deron Kosloski

The Discourse page is where the biggest value is, in my opinion. You’ll be surprised if you visit it.

Meryl Logue

Say, Rex, I've been at the $5 level for several months now, and have been doing that because I feel you have an excellent channel, and your product on that channel is well worth the $5, But I started having difficulty getting to the videos and plans, and went directly to the Patreon page, where it told me that I wasn't supporting anyone! Wrong! I've been sending $5/monthly to you and to Mike Stinnett, whom I also support. I complained to the Patreon helpdesk and they didn't reply, but now at least your names show up. Is there a way you can check back and see if y support dropped into your piggybank?

Howard Tuckey

Hey Jeff, I had to read Michael's comment twice because I don't think he would disparage patrons at any level. I believe he was referring to people who join for $2 for a single month with the express intent of getting all of the plans then cancelling their membership once they have games the system. I agree wholeheartedly, it's not good for the community to shame anyone for any level of support!

Nic Beurskens

Hey Rex! It's not possible for me to join the 5$ group for now, but I was wondering if, in the situation I would join it, I would get access to all of the other older lectures?

Adrien Renaux

I jumped on the $2 a while ago, my first ever subscription/contribution to a YouTuber. One of my thoughts was to get cheap access to the plans, but I’ve found a great community of people, getting me hooked on everything. I haven’t used any of the plans yet except the Japanese saw horses which I absolutely love. I plan on building the new 30 dollar bench to get started and then go for the English Joiners Bench. Just upped my subscription, I’m hesitating to go any higher, don’t tell my wife I upped at all! 😅

Otto van Biessum

I jumped in at $2 and have been there for awhile, because free plans! But I hear everything you're saying, Rex, and I'm glad that you're going in this direction. I haven't really availed myself of the discourse page, but I think that'll be changing. I'm also upping my pledge, because your new series looks awesome, and I'm excited. Keep being awesome!

TwoRavens

I've been at the $5 since I joined. Obviously, this doesn't impact me too much. But seeing this, I've gladly upped to $7. Thank you for all that you give, and ways you support, this amazing community!

Alec

Thank you, you are a true gent :)

Jim

Hi Rex, and community. I follow and subscribe to a lot of Youtube channels, but I have always looked forward to new videos on your channel the most. I confess, I initially became a member for the plans because I realized what a great deal it was. In reality, I have used only a few of them, but love your wit and wisdom and introducing me to other woodworkers like Paul Sellers and many others. I quickly calculated your income based on total membership, and thought, wow, what a deal you are getting, but then I realized what you provide and you deserve every cent. My cable and internet bill alone is almost 200 bucks and medical bills in the thousands every year. I could go on, but the bottom line is this: You provide a professional program that is both enjoyable and informative. I doubt I will miss the extra few dollars to upgrade. Don't tell my wife! If I understand correctly the only difference at the $7 level is to watch live and interact. Is that correct? Thanks for all you do!

Jim Stensos

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

We all need more afternoons off!

Rex Krueger

I think $2 is totally fair if the forum is the main thing you want.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I'm delighted that you think so!

Rex Krueger

I totally understand!

Rex Krueger

Hi Rex, I realise I'm currently at the $2 level but I really appreciate the fact that you've kept everyone equal thus far. But being self employed and in business myself, I understand the need for growth and change. I'll need to stay at the $2 level for the moment, but I'm planning on upgrading as time and life permits :)

Jim

I will see what I can find out. I live in UK so it wouldnt be right for me to recommend a USA company that I have never used. But see if I can get a recommendation from the Deaf network on twitter.

The Deaf Maker

I'm not sure how belittling people who chose to support Rex at a perfectly legitimate membership level contributes anything good to the community.

Jeff Tinsley

Given everything you offer, and all benefits I have received, $5 is an incredibly generous value. Totally Worth It!!!

Louis

Looking forward to it. Thanks Rex (and team).

Ian McElcheran

Yeah the $2 tier is good value, but on a strictly value-based proposition I can't justify it because I don't make efficient use of it. But I don't care about that because it's primarily to support the YouTube channel. I'm unlikely to increase a subscription for a livestream, particularly due to timezone issues, but to take some information from online tech conferences I'd probably pay for lectures in a conference-style weekend of streaming lecture content. More a community watch party than a conference I suppose.

Robin Scarfe

There is a nice balance here with the $2 $5 & $7 levels and it is greatly appreciated. Some of us do not want or have the time or need to watch a live class. Plus, at the $2 level I get everything I need from early release (sometimes I watch and sometimes I don’t) with plans and the forum access. For me the forum is the place to be because it fits into my schedule plus I don’t need another “time sink” in my life. However, this change will be positive for most I’m sure!

Hansenomics

They're all free: https://rexkrueger.discourse.group/c/plans-archive/11

Rex Krueger

This sounds good to me. The online is right at lunch here on the west coast so that gives me a good reason to take the afternoon off to watch and then go to the shop. Thank you Rex.

Matt Evans-Koch

$5.00, show it Rex!

Pete seddon

I'm hedging my bets, upgraded to the $5 as I'm not sure how EST works, at the moment that's 9PM GMT. If I'm right that will be 8PM when our clocks go back to winter time, if it's t'other way and it becomes 10PM that's a little late. So for now I'll go with the recorded version. (Hope that makes sense)

Mad Hamish

I'm at the $2 level because I don't have much time to actually build anything, but I do support your work. I think the change in tier levels is quite fair. Hope it goes well.

Trinidad Regaspi

Great news Rex, I'm happy for you! Being one of your "fly by night" patrons, I only wish I could afford more to see the rest. But I'm on a fixed income and give what I can afford to enjoy your wit and wisdom. Glad to see you up and running full steam again! God bless.

Will Bonner

Just looked—there’s a link to the Discourse repository of plans in the description of the posts about the plans.

Jason Bailey

All his plans are free to patrons. They are usually in a post a few days after the video. I think there’s a repository of all of them on the forum thing, but I honestly have barely looked at that thing…that just seems like a rabbit hole I might never escape.

Jason Bailey

I'm sure a lot of those "fly by night" $2 patrons realized that they could save money by getting your plans by joining up as a patron. Once they managed to get all your available plans, they left. They might come back once they see some plans that they really want, but until then... you'll get bupkis. I know, because I downloaded every plan you had posted soon after I joined. But, I also knew I'd remain your patron. To stop that from happening, at the $5 level give them free access to your new plans for the first 30 days. At the $7 level, they get the same, plus a %age discount on any older plans. Add a higher level that will allow access to the whole plan library for free. I'm currently between jobs. But as soon as I have the extra funds available, I plan on leveling up. I was planning on leveling up across the board with all my memberships... then life happened. :( BTW, good choice on choosing Shannon Rogers to be your first guest speaker. I'm one of his patrons too.

Michael Bennett

Hey, Rex, this is great news. I’m an apprentice in Shannon’s school and look forward to seeing him offer this bench top lecture. Question: I just upgraded this morning from $5 to $7. Will I be able to be in on the live chat or will it not be processed in time for Thursday, since the first of the month is next Sunday?

Sean O'Neill

"Free plans" (mentioned at 3:23). Can you please clarify which plans are free at which Patreon levels? Are there any that are free at my current $2 level? Thanks.

Peter R Chastain

Damn I am so dumb :D thanks ;) properly updated

Jarek Krzemieński

Wonderful idea! And... great for you for bringing people together in this way. Not everyone has the skill set and introspection to do something like this. It takes people skills, a proper view of your market place, AND a good dose of humility. Bravo! If more people in more businesses did things like this, our economy would change drastically for the better. Rex 2.0 (or is it 3.0 or 4.0 by now... if you are doing it right, one tends to lose count): Can't wait to see what you have in store for us!

Jason Blank

You should be able to make a custom donation amount on the edit subscription page. The tier amount is the minimum requirement.

Brian King

Rex. Great idea. I appreciate the separation between access to the new sessions vs. interactive access. I really do not see myself contributing much in an interactive manner, but am still really interested in the content. I'm glad there is a tier just for my desired level of participation!

Colby Allred

I think you should add one more tier here - let's say 10 dollars - I would increase my spend on you immediately. Thera are some people which undesratnd the need of supporting others - that is my case for instance. I didnt get anything more so far for my 7 USD support but I would support more if I could :) BTW - this 4 p.m. I suspect is some US time - can you post some details what will be the time in CEST? I am on holiday but I will get up early at night to watch this session :D

Jarek Krzemieński

Just upgraded to the $5 level. I was thinking of doing this anyways thanks to the great forum. Thanks for all the great content!

Matt Stalford

Absolutely reasonable argumentation. I have been a 2 dollar Patreon for months and upgraded now to 7 dollars. I think this is still a bargain and can’t wait to see the extra content. :)

Stephan Meinhardt

Still a great bargain. Thanks for this.

James Carey

Another $2 patron who'll need to stay at that level, but I am really glad to see you doing this, Rex. Patronage is not the same as a tip jar; those who provide more support should get more back. I spent years helping authors and others build communities, and a threshold for entry builds a better community. You're going to be happy you made the decision to bump the minimum up to $5. It's good for your people.

Joel D Canfield

You put way more than $5 worth of effort into this community Rex, you're the only creator I've seen who has been over delivering on the promise of the platform. I'm a $2 Patron, and for the time being will remain a $2 Patron simply because I'm in a poor position to increase my pledge. I'm glad you're grandpatroning people like me into the new system, but I'd also understand if many of the new benefits were restricted to the new tiers going forward. I'm really just here to kick in a few bucks for a great creator putting out great content. 😁

Barmp

When I first started on Patreon I supported three individuals. I now only support you Rex. You’re commitment to no-nonsense wood working is an inspiration and shows that if you build it out of wood, you’re a woodworker. Maybe next time your work will be better, but it doesn’t take a warehouse of tools and expensive specialty equipment to make real, useful, and beautiful things by hand. Have been at $7 since the start and you’ve basically got me locked it. Can’t wait to see the new series.

Jeremiah Trammel

I was happy to join at 5 and happy to be in at 7. Keep up the great work Rex!

warren stockwell

Just upgraded too. Still a bargain! Thanks so much for all you do.

Sarah

Thanks Rex. I’ve enjoyed and learned so much from you that I can’t remember.. I’m sure that I am a better woodworker for it. Looking forward to your new adventure. Bill.

Bill Yaeger

Upgraded to $7(9.50cdn). It is going to be well worth it, supporting you at $5 has been well worth doing so. You are worth it. Thanks for continuing on! Looking forwards to the Workbench Series. Very excited about the renaissance woodworker.

William Allen

Just upgraded to highest tier too. I am sure I will miss most of live videos due to timezone, but hey, your content is great. I started woodworking this year (after nearly year of preparation - buying tools and watching videos). Some people spend hundreds a year on their golf courses and membership costs. So spending few extra pounds to learn something I utterly enjoy is a no-brainer. And anyway, when someone asks me why I started woodworking I always say: "Rex made me do it". So, here's to you 🥳🥳 🍻🥂

Lubos Tomicek

I haven’t watched the video yet, but I did up my Patreon level based on the description. Rex, you suckered me in at the basic tier mostly because I wanted to say thanks for your videos. But, your Discourse forum has turned out to be such a wealth of information and friendly community. I’d be happy to upgrade on that basis alone. A friend introduced me to the concept of “ikigai”: do what you are able; do what brings you satisfaction; do what sustains you—or something like that. I hope these changes help you achieve some or all of that.

Peter Schmiedeskamp

Just upgraded to $7. Keep up the GREAT work, Rex. You’re doing awesomely! And much appreciated!

Russell Gough

i am cheap and I loved the way you offered the same content regardless the paid level. I also love the community at discourse and that makes it easy dicision. 5 USD + tax it is. The live watching perk would probably be lost on my due time zone difference but I cant miss any of your content. Thank you for doing what you do, Rex.

Otakar Schön

Business 101, pay yourself first. Great creative/informative content, well worth the price.

Kevin S Thomas

Is that 8 foot or 10 foot? Lol

John Hiemstra

Rex - I appreciate all you’ve done and for how long you’ve kept everything open for all. Your Jeffersonian democratic approach to all your content has been great and your love for teaching has come through. We all understand that things cost and as complexity grows so do budgets. Thanks for all you do and keep up the good work.

Clint

By the way. The discourse group is well worth the membership.

John Hiemstra

Well that was easy to update. $9.50 Canadian. I'm excited. Thanks Rex for all your hard work and thank you for explaining it. Makes a whole lot of sense. I have never been a patron of anybody else. You're the first. Looking forward to the lecture series. I will rarely see them live but I want to support what you do. Thanks again.

John Hiemstra

I am in the UK and to be honesthave found alot of posatives, the presentaion style and content are very well put together, While I pay the $5 option I pay $6 due to costs. So I have already payed that wee bit more, which is fine, so for me I will stick on my chosen option. I do feel really let about the book launch, I really want to get one of the early release preemium copiess, BUT because of postage costs Iwas noteven allowed to buy and pay the costs. Now to make it worse, the 22nd was te date of release, and I have an email stating it is delayed.. I feel sometimes we miss out, and totally understnd we are not alone.

Gary Meechan

What's another $5 per month to upgrade. The content and community access is worth it alone? Great job, Rex!

Daniel Tickle

Bring it brother! The Mighty Rex roars again. Marking tail/pin from your Simple Dovetailed Box plans last night. Had my boards and hand tools in the living room in front of your video. Play, stop, rewind. Like the old days of VHS :) All the best for you and the new Workbench Sessions.

As The Money Flows

Upgraded to the $7 tier

Matthew Leigh

I have only been a member for about a month. I joined at the $2 level to see what it’s all about. I’m an avid disc golfer and to be honest I watch way more disc golf than woodworking. I’ve never joined any patreon channel s before yours. I’ve started watching other woodworking channels, but yours is the only one that I can watch the videos multiple times. That being said I will up my subscription.

David Boardman

Rex - No worries on the changes. Really enjoying your content & keep the good stuff up!

Evan Van Dyke

As a $2 member I appreciate the amount of content that you give for a mere $2. I have only been a patron since the start of this year but compared to what other people charge and what you get for more money your $2 and even the $5 membership is a much better value then a lot of people. I may end up needing to upgrade to $5 because I am interested in who will be on this discussion. Will there be a schedule posted on the discourse page to show who will be or has committed to the event.

Boney Boards

As a 5$ patron I look forward to seeing the first replay👍. Rex I appreciate you discussing your business decisions and reasoning behind them. Keep up the good work and innovation 👍

The Super-wrench Garage

Captioning is an evolving thing for us. Can you recommend a service that can do good captions for this kind of thing?

Rex Krueger

Done. Kerf on!

Larry W Thayer

Attending a live event will be hard for me. I think you do great work and I feel good supporting you at my current level. I am glad you are doing this. It will provide incentive for others to increase their support.

Skully Wood and Metal

I haven't reviewed my various Patreon memberships, and this seems as good a reason as any. :) Best of luck with the series - I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Kris Towson

I have immediately jumped to 7 from 2. I doubt I will ever see one of these lectures live as I work shifts but I am sure that I will still get loads out of them.

Rob Lovett

Great announcement Rex, good to see the channel evolving. Quick question about the workbench sessions, will they be captioned for deaf and hard of hearing folks? I am not expecting the live one to be captioned as that would be a nightmare, but the edited version afterwards would be useful.

The Deaf Maker

With all this happy, happy, joy, joy, Kumbaya stuff I'm seeing here, I think I'll go ahead and up myself from $5 to $7. $7 is just one warped pine 2x4 for you folks trying to justify the expense. Lol

Jeff Tinsley

Rex, I watch many YouTube videos but your the only one I have chosen to support. With your channel the amount of knowledge and ingenuity you share is worth way more than $7.00. I waste more than that every day on trivial stuff! God Bless!

d. wolfe

I've always liked the content you put out. I started at the 5 dollar level, because I figured there are people that wish they could give more, but haven't been able to. Looks like I'll have to move up a level! Got to make sure you stay around, and can continue to make more content!

Jesse Woodring

Hey Rex - As a $2 member I am intrigued by your new $5 lecture series. One thing. If I try it and like it great! - But if I don't can I go back to being a $2 member or is that over?

Steve Christoffers

Hey Rex, I have not been a supporter for that long, but I understand the way you are going. In fact you got me with the 2 Dollar level because I just wanted to give you a lil sth... Sympathy and all the effort should be rewarded ! As Adam already mentioned in a comment above I would appreciate a lil peak of what these workbench sessions are like so that I could make my descision much easier wheather to upgrade or not. Besides that, keep on doing the great work you do !! THX

Denis Sieben

I think he's going to be great! Thanks for your enthusiasm.

Rex Krueger

You know, I don't see those costs as a hardship; just a cost of doing business....a cost that's slowly gotten a little out of control.

Rex Krueger

And I only get to do it because of you!

Rex Krueger

I'm so glad!

Rex Krueger

And thank YOU for being here!

Rex Krueger

Thank you all so much! You are appreiated!

Rex Krueger

It's possible I will offer the first one to $2 Patrons. It is something I've thought about.

Rex Krueger

The lecture series sounds like an awesome idea. Thanks for going through the hard and costly work of making it happen! And Shannon has such a wealth of knowledge. Looking forward to the first lecture!

Alex Lopatka

I even upgraded to $7, because ... why not? :^)

Thomas Hverring

Cheers, Thomas. I also just made room! This guy's going above and beyond as far as I'm concerned.

Tsani Rósenov Sábev

Thanks for not removing the $2 level. I would have to drop at least one other creator I support to move up right now,and I really don't want to do that. I agree that the folks who can put in more deserve the extra perks, and the Workbench Sessions sounds like a great one. While the extra costs on your end are a hardship, it's a symptom of how well you're doing with your channel. I hope the changes you're making work to re-balance your expenses.

Dan Kramer

Well, I found room. No, I didn't, I made room.

Thomas Hverring

I have never regretted supporting the content you produce. I have been debating adding more support for the great work you do. The debate is over. The value you give is just terrific.

Shanni Marmen

Damn straight mate. I’ll ante up. Looking forward to the new lecture series.

Michael Mulhern

WOW! That's so much work to do an hour long live stream! I am sure you know that a ton of people join, pickup "free plans" and then leave. I air quote free because nothing is free. It's costing someone something. I wish to thank you for the additional content, but I have stayed at my support level because I enjoy your video's and content and appreciate the effort it takes to make. After watching for almost most of 2020, we decided in Jan 2021 that you could use our support and we joined at the Leader level. We have been all to pleased we did. We support other channels but we choose our support dollars very carefully and this was for us a "no brainer". Even when you have been out sick, there are still ongoing costs that need to get paid and I can well afford to continue to support your efforts. I'm sure there are many others who feel the same way. Thank you for the additional content and I am hoping for nothing but the best for you, the channel.

Marc Barash

Sounding great! I wish I had room in my budget to upgrade my Patreon to $5.

Thomas Hverring

So does that mean $2 patrons will get to see that video and decide whether to upgrade?

Adam Gaskin
