Early Access Video: Nailed Mission Bench

Friends:

This video has been in the works for a while. I found this lovely Mission bench in a photo months ago and set out to recreate it. As you'll see in the video, it was a long journey.

The finished product is delightful. It's sturdy, simple, and elegant. It already has a proud place in my home.

The best part is the simple, nailed construction. This piece has minimal joinery and no glue. Just a few notches and 16 nails. This project is ideal for a beginner and a fun build for a more experienced craftsperson. There's something for everyone here.

As usual, the plans are being drawn now (in their new, updated style) and they will be posted here and on the Plan Archive on Wednesday morning.

Happy Saturday!

Early Access Video: Nailed Mission Bench

I added it.

Rex Krueger

I might do a video with my new designer. That would be interesting.

Rex Krueger

Rex! Love the project. But I have to say that's not what I envision when I read "mission-style" This picture pretty much sums up what I think of. https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/thmb/u456VzNb-A64Jg2D4m9RqjFAbNg=/960x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/MissionDesk-59109e345f9b58647009b993.jpg Is this the california part of the statement? like a regional differences? because the style seems to be wildly different from the veritcal, straight lines I'm used to seeing.

Jeremy Carlsten

I loved the video, Rex! Do you think you'll ever post a video of how you go from idea to prototype, rather than showing us how to make the finished thing? It would save you from making redundant benches (if such a thing can even exist), and it could be interesting to see the full story of your creativity! I can follow directions (thanks for the plans!), but whenever I try to approach the early part of the woodworking process, I have to confront the fact that I haven't developed my instincts yet. Seeing the earlier, unpolished steps feels like it would help.

Topos Logic

Thanks Rex. Quick question, which protractor do you recommend? I don't think the link is in the show notes.

Chris O'Sullivan

Exactly. Sometimes you just have to make your mistakes to make less of them later.

Sean McGown

Or six times in two days, as was the case when we put on musicals when I was in high school. It’s not by chance that the final performance of “Hair” was our best one, nor that professional productions have a preview period before the official opening night.

Ragnhild

Always interesting and inspiring. Thank you, Rex!

Patrick Salsbury

You are so right about building prototypes. I learn so much on the first try so the second is always better. The prototype can be recycled or often is just as usable but not so polished. Build it twice for twice the fun. Your channel is arguably the most useful for us beginners on YouTube because your knowledge and presentation skills are exceptional. With respect.

Kenneth Hughes

I've used those for stock before. They're often very nice!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Tremon Nail in New Jersey. They sell on Amazon. There's a link in the video.

Rex Krueger

You’re already wearing the hearing protection, so if you do have to fire up a machine, you don’t need to go looking for it.

Rex Krueger

That is a spoon-makers draw knife from Tools for Working Wood. It’s a very nice tool, but also a total impulse purchase. I haven’t used it yet.

Rex Krueger

You need to reduce all the measurements proportionally, but leave the angles the same. Angles aren’t affected by size, as strange as that sounds. You can really make it any size you like.

Rex Krueger

Probably Amazon?

Rex Krueger

That's AMAZING! The furniture in that shot is great. The whole place looks great. Wish I had visited when I lived in CA.

Rex Krueger

I don’t recall ever wanting it to be Wednesday sooner. Very excited to make this. I recently pick up some old table leafs that are just waiting to be made into this.

Thrifty Woodworker

Showing how you refine the details like lining up the legs with chisel work until it's tight was worth the vid for me. I also liked the advice to do stuff multiple times. As a musician, if you perform something over a weeks time every night, you really hear the difference on the last night from the first.

Sean McGown

Maybe recreate all the furniture in the photo. I especially love the red table on the right.

Amy Holderness

Hi Russell, I bought the nails years ago (still have many) and the sizing info has worn off the box. I mostly used on smaller items like boxes. The length is 1.25". This link should get you started. https://www.tremontnail.com/cgi-bin/shop/items?mv_arg=34. I'm not sure the size Rex used in the video. Good luck!

Amy Holderness

"Plane in, toward the middle, from each corner." One line and you've just given me two projects to take on, Rex. Thanks, buddy! (And no, that's not sarcasm.)

Mark Zaugg

As soon as you said La Purisima, I had to pause the video and show my wife the picture. She worked as a docent there when she was a teenager, along with her mother, who still does. She said she probably knew the people who made most of the stuff in the picture. She said that was probably the soldier's quarters, and also mentioned that the stove in the back of the picture worked pretty well...

Kenneth Carlile

Great video and piece of furniture. How can I get your new book in Australia?

Gordon Adams

Nice video Rex. Love the mission style furniture and this style of bench will look good on my from porch. Thank you and have your book on order.

Matt Evans-Koch

I was wondering about the hearing protection. Thanks for explaining. Nice project. 👍🏼

Kelly Adkinson

I love how the grain in the sides lines up with the roman ogee <3

Daniel Bohrer

Lovely. I especially subscribe to the repeat a project again and again mantra. Thank you Rex!

Vasileios

OMG, Amy, Tremont has so many choices! That’s great! Which ones do you typically use?

Russell Gough

Amy, thanks for the link!

Russell Gough

Rex, your videos just get better and better. I really appreciate what you’re doing behind the camera as much as in front of it. And this is a GREAT project: who couldn’t use a lovely small bench? Can’t wait to get the plans. Thanks so much!

Russell Gough

Really like this one I am a huge fan of older mission and western furniture

Billy Schwake

I've been using cut nails for over 25 years. I can attest, all the things I've built with them are still holding strong. If you don't know where to get them - I shop here - https://www.tremontnail.com/catalog.htm. They are fantastic. Love this project. Wonder if the benches would be as good / strong if they were longer? Thanks, Rex. Another quality project.

Amy Holderness

Another great video

Jason Ransom

I always look forward to Saturday mornings. A good coffee and a Rex video...ahhh this is the life. Fantastic build. Thanks Rex. Glad I'm a patron.

John Hiemstra

That’s a lovely bench, thank you for the video! Where are you getting your cut nails? They have masonry ones at the orange and blue boxes but those are not the same. TFWW sells the right stuff, but is there anywhere else?

Aaron Wasielewski

Great project. Great video. Glad to be a Patron of it.

Pete seddon

Nice project...can't wait for my mother-in-law leaves so I can get back into my shop. :-D

Steve Jones

I love it, I have been wanted to build another bench or two since I did the staked bench a year ago. I just completed the 6 board chest except for finish. Keep up the good work Rex I love your projects. I use the same head phones, hearing protection and listening to novels.

Skully Wood and Metal

That project is very nice. I am very excited about your new book. I ordered the Kindle version. I will save this project for later as I feel having a foundation to work off if will be helpful. For example your Japanese saw horses and your new smaller workbench. Good going on the tunes, music really helps and like you I found that “earplugs with speakers” really do help. Hearing protection and tunes in one device.

Paul Ladd

Thank you, Rex. Very nicely done, the benches and the video.

Michael Ross

I enjoyed the video.

Todd Maurer

Definitely making a few of these. Looks like the perfect gift and Christmas is coming.

Thrifty Woodworker

Good morning! I'm trying to figure out what that item is hanging on the wall in a bubble pack behind you over your left shoulder. My first thought was, it was a two finger draw knife. Can you help an early novice out?

Larry W Thayer

Nice job on the video and the plans look like they will be spectacular. I have a need for a stool and this looks like a good plan for that as well, if I wanted to reduce the height, do I need to reduce everything in proportion in order to keep the lines? Since there will be less height, do I need to increase the splay in order to keep the stability?
