Sneak Peek: New Styles for Graphics and Plans
Added 2021-05-29 11:00:03 +0000 UTC
Friends:
As I wrote a few weeks ago, I'm taking the last week of each month off so I can do things like payroll and taxes; the things the keep any business going.
So this week, I'm not doing a regular video, but I do have a sneak peek at the new graphics style you'll be seeing in plans and videos. I recently hired a CAD designer (who is also finishing a Master's in Architecture). We'll be doing all future 3D modeling in Fusion 360 and updating the graphic design to be more modern and professional.
In the picture, you can see a model of a Mission-style nailed bench. That's not a photograph; it's a digital rendering. The video of the bench build will be out either next week or the week after. It's built and the plans are almost done. And of course, they will be free to Patrons.
Oh, and in preparation for my forthcoming book, I did a short video on how to make a strop, so you get a video after all!
Hope everyone has a great weekend. See you next week!

Thank you for the update Rex. That rendering is really nice. The new designer is going to be a big help in increasing your content and the already good quality of your plans. Now it is going to be harder to make my work look like the plans and the renderings.

Frans van Ballegooijen I recognize that Rex will not be doing the actual CAD work, but he is the face of the Rex Krueger empire. Because of that, Rex will get the credit when the plans {or videos) are good and he will be the focus of any criticism.

Rex won't be doing CAD himself. He hired a CAD designer. So any critisism on the CAD designs will not reflect on Rex, but on the designer...

Awesome Rex! Will you be making Fusion files available as part of "the plans" moving forward? Would be ever so nice to make little tweaks that parametric modeling makes so easy!

Fusion is free for hobbyists; there is a license option for those of us who just use it for person projects that costs nothing.

Hi Rex!
I've heard that F360 is a piece of a very good software. However it is not free software. I believe you might want give FreeCAD a try. I am sure it's not as powerful as F360, but I believe it's good enough for woodworking projects. And your viewers will appreciate FC is available for free. (And has a great community.)
Your CAD designer might also be interested in FreeCAD as one of its authors is an architect and he develops a BIM module and says, he uses FC professionally. (Look for FreeCAD related presentations on this year's FOSDEM conference, they are available online at https://fosdem.org/2021/)

Thank you Rex. I'm looking forward to getting your book. I love books as much as woodworking. This makes me giddy. Lol

I have been using Fusion for my stuff, I find it more intuitive than Sketch Up

Rex, your plans have always been of quality, having a dedicated designer is just next level stuff. Also really appreciate the basics on the recent video's - There is a large generation of us who never had a shop class and had to learn by just doing. All the basic "pro-tips" do help. Thank you.

Image looks amazing, beautiful piece! Thank you for the amazing value that you provide to everyone, so excited to see the new look for your forthcoming plans. It makes total sense for you to take that time each month for the not-so-exciting-but-necessary-for-running-a-business stuff. Thank you again!

Enjoy your week of different duties.
The image looks great! Using CAD for your models presents you with more decisions to make. Are you going to offer the CAD models with your plans? When do you use rendered images versus unshaded images? I prefer unshaded images when I am printing a drawing but a rendered image can clarify the part. If you share the CAD models, you are inviting critique of your CAD skills and techniques by those of us who are eager to tell you that our techniques are better.

Kudos for offering your book in Kindle format. I am 71 and it makes it really easy to read plus I can take out in my shop for easy reference.
