Early Access Video: Rex Reacts to Patron Projects!

Friends:

Today’s video is extra-special. We’ve gathered a bunch of fantastic projects from our Discourse Discussion Board and I’m looking at them for the first time ever, live on camera!

This video was only possible because of our amazing community, as well as our extraordinary moderators, Ethan Chitty, A1BASE, and Nic Beurskens, who picked the projects and put them together into a beautifully organized slide show. Because of their hard work, I was able to sit down with a laptop and have an organic,  unrehearsed reaction to these projects.

I had a lot of fun making this video and I’m so grateful to all the people who made it possible by sharing their work with the rest of us.

Hope everyone enjoys, and I hope we get to do this again. We certainly have enough outstanding woodworking to do another one of these videos.

Happy Saturday!

I’m guessing you missed where I spent 2 months working on the floor with no bench just my own weight and some hand screw clamps. Downside to having an outdoor shop is heat in winter, so a basement shop like yours would do me wonders, but I don’t want to carry lumber downstairs and carry furniture or something up the stairs when I’m done building it

The Poor Man

Inspirational! I admit I have spent most of my “online” woodworking time on the forum rather than here. It really is a great forum, very welcoming group, and so many folks are willing to help with pointers on whatever you’re working on. I’m still in my first couple of projects, neither is complete yet, but the LBR is proving itself to be invaluable as I work in my garage in the space my car sits in while I’m not woodworking. These discussion groups have really boosted my confidence, and it feels like something I’ll be sticking with. Thanks everybody!

Adam Hinkel

Those are some brill looking projects that people have put together. I'd imagine they'd love hearing your feedback on them. Nice one Rex :)

Jim

I recently joined the Discourse group and it has been wonderful. Thank you Rex for showcasing the great work that's being done there and shout outs to the moderators for curating some excellent content!

Bayard

Rex, what a great idea to show what others are doing. I really loved the encouragement of WHERE they are working. For years, I worked next to my car or on the kitchen table. Making is more important than the shop. Now, I have a dedicated shop. It is lovely. Do more of these. Perhaps, pick a theme and do it that way (all shop stuff, all furniture, or how a person progresses over time.

The plane build was a Dunlap that was #3 sized. I got it in a Craigslist lot. Cast iron body, tote and knob were all lost causes.

Todd Maurer

I love this video - fantastic! If you are interested in doing more like this, maybe you could make "Rex Critiques one of your projects" a Patreon reward at the higher levels?

Evan Van Dyke

Rex, I have a suggestion: how about doing another video in this same format except focus on the work of beginners in mid-project so that you can give helpful, constructive feedback on their progress. Know what I mean?

Russell Gough

Thank you Rex for the review and many thanks to Nic, Ethan and A1BASE for putting all of this together. I have been over to the Forum a number of times but have found that if I don't limit my visits I get lost in all of the great work and projects and never get anything done myself. Lots of great people at all levels of skill encouraging each other. Wonderful place to hang out. Take care all and keep making.

Matt Evans-Koch

You might have heard Stairway a few thousand times but have you ever heard these very Australian versions from a wonderful 1990s TV show called The Money or the Gun. 26 versions of the same song, from punk to electronica via pirates, opera, heavy metal and wobble board? https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB51C97ADB8ED0B89

Laurie Savage

This is a wonderful theme for a video. Would enjoy seeing another like this in the future. Thanks.

Laura Reutter

You are not the only woodworker who does not want a moxon. I love my leg vise.

Bill Rhodes

That wheat carving is an easy chip carving. Rex you can do it.

John Foster

Rex I know you don’t post on the forum, but you should take some time and lurk there if you don’t there are so many great projects and it’s nice especially for us beginners to be encouraged.

Billy Schwake

Thanks Rex, it is very jenerous from you to give us guys work review. Much to learn! Now I feel I would like to send you my 'very beginner's' projects too. Will you do it again?

Avi Strauch

Shout out for led zep fans out there. Thanks Rex !

Bartek Bulzak

A lot of great projects! I'm humbled to be in such great company. By the way, the 'tray' I (Northern Jeff) made holds a baby change pad... it serves up a clean bottom for my grandson. :) This channel has helped me so much to get things done and have fun doing it.

Jeff Stauffer

Those were some great projects that were on there

Boney Boards

Satisfactory! :)

Jim Williams

Wow, that was impressive. Inspiring. Love it!

John Hiemstra

You have inspired all of these great projects! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us!

Marty Ford

Really great to see so many fantastic builds! If you want more info on the router plane, it looks a lot like a design I came across on the stumpy nubs channel. The one in this video looks to be far better executed than my copy or even stumpy's.

Ryan foulds

Great looking projects. I also want to give thanks to Ethan. Will, and Nic for moderating the wonderful discussion forum - a fantastic forum and resource.

My previous reply disappeared for some reason. Here we go again! The wedding organiser in its inception was supposed to be a central piece during my wedding. The rings were to reach the altar on it, giving a wonderful photo of the ringbearer carrying the rings on the box with my fiancée and me reflected on the lid. The box is entirely made out of reclaimed lumber. The dark one is merbau. The project also includes beech, poplar and cocobolo. The design is all Paul Sellers' work, and I cannot take much credit for it, although I did give it a twist with the mirror. This way, his desktop organiser became my wedding organiser. The worksurface you can see in the photo is a masonry work surface built in in the carport that I rent as a shop and garage. I use it for marking and shooting mostly. The rest of the work I do on a low Roman workbench that will soon enough be replaced by a Moravian also with a twist.

Tsani Rósenov Sábev

Hey Modnar here, thanks for the kind words. The wood I used is zebra wood. There was only epoxy used on the end grain. I'm working out of a tiny shed and have a low Roman bench as well to use outside. I plan on using that rest of that wood for more of your wood working for humans tools. Thanks for all you do, without it I wouldn't be on this journey.

Ian greene

That was fun. First, thank you for your kind words. Second, I cannot take credit for creating the saw handle, nor the wheat carving (I have no skill in carving... yet). That was the handle to my fathers hardware store saw that I was restoring. The picture was part of a progression of ammonia staining, because, well, I saw a video and thought, what could go wrong with using a hazardous liquid in the shop. BTW, the ammonia staining works wonder in any wood high in tannins. Keep up the wonderful work.

Bill Brisky

It is good to see so many great projects with varying levels of progress in the craft

The Super-wrench Garage

Wow, so impressed ! In fact all of them are really big compliments, Rex...

Ton Wanten

Thanks for the shout out! Dahncke is pronounced Dane Key, and no one had ever gotten it right hahaha. Coming up on 1 year into my woodworking journey.
