Free Plans: The 6 Board Chest

Friends:

Here are the blanket chest plans. I admit, these were much harder to design than I expected. The project isn't that complex, but there are a lot of steps and details.

One of my outstanding Patrons pointed out that my plans would be improved with page numbers, so I've added those and I'll put them on all future plans.

As usual, these are also up on the Discourse Plan Archive, along with ALL the plans I've ever made. All free for you.

Can't wait to see what you all do with this one!

They came in and i was able to test them in soft pine i think. 1/8 drill bit on just the face board worked really well and didn't split the wood as long as i didn't try to sink the head.

I found 4d Cut nails on Amazon, from a supplier in the US I think that Chris Schwarz mentions in a popular woodworking article https://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/stock-your-shop-with-the-right-nails/

Question, this is going to be my next project but need help with the nails. Only place I found here in Canada was Lee Valley and need to order them. My question is, should I get the variety pack ( 23, 40, 50 and 35 mm) 140 count for various projects or get just 35mm for the normal 3/4” projects. The nails are diamond head Forged nails from Clouterie Rivierre, no idea what that mean but sounds fancy as fact can be with nails.

My son and I built this over a four day weekend. In order to do this I needed to first: level a new plane, sharpen new irons, and build a gauge. Rex’s videos were great as were the plans, I just couldn’t get the gauge build right. I broke 2 and not my son and I couldn’t keep the holes straight. My rabbets have much to be worked on, but I learned a lot and after a successful build, I became a patron to support more videos. Thank you Rex

I am just pricing parts out for this one... It's going to actually be cheaper for me to build this one out of laminated Hevea (rubberwood) panels than plain old pine. Incidentally, I did find some tiny cut nails at Bunnings(Home Depot Australian accents)... Little upholstery tacks.

It's getting both dowel-holes perfectly parallel that got me. I know it's doable, but I didn't feel like messing with it.

Rex, It would make assembly a little tricky. Probably need an extra set of hands.

I really tried to do that, but I just couldn't get it right, so I went with hardware.

If this chest was used as a toy box there are pinch points for little fingers. The lid could be close above the sides to not trap any digits. Rex just finished the plans and already we’re changing it on him! Shakers might not plan for children’s use of furniture! LOL

When I was watching the video last week, I remembered seeing a blanket chest till where the lid pivoted on either dowels or hand carved dowel like projections. I checked online and found a photos of a chest at the Shaker Museum in Mount Lebanon, NY. And that would make sense since it eliminated the need for the pair of small hinges and another trip to the blacksmith. Take a look at this Shaker chest - https://www.shakermuseum.us/object/?id=2472

Another great set of plans, Rex! Thank you!
