Sneak Peek: The Six-Board Chest

Friends:

I just finished this blanket-chest and I wanted you all to get the first look. (Really the first; my wife hasn't even seen it yet.)

There are more pictures and a discussion thread over on the Discourse: https://rexkrueger.discourse.group/t/the-iconic-six-board-chest/6510

The video will be up Saturday!

Sneak Peek: The Six-Board Chest

Comments

I Agree with Jeff. Since your videos are what rekindled my excitement for woodworking, I whole heartedly think that you should build one and let us “schlubs” grow with you :-)

Jacob Downing

Fantastic article. Thanks for sharing👍

Andrew Waddington

Make a video of that build, and then fill it with the same hand tools that were found in it!

Jeff Gedney

That's the one!

Rex Krueger

Oh? A mastermyr chest? That would be awesome

Jeff Gedney

Dust 'em off!

Rex Krueger

I'm supposed to make one with a smith buddy of mine. We've been talking about it for 2 years!

Rex Krueger

It's a "till." You can make one, too. Promise.

Rex Krueger

This is a style of chest that goes all the way back to Viking times. ( https://www.greydragon.org/library/chests.html ) I have made a few for historical reenactments. but not as nice as this. for ease of transport I added rope bails on either end, that is all

Jeff Gedney

This looks awesome! I especially love the inside "drawer" or "sub-chest" (???) drawer opening up and becoming the support of the door. Extra storage and functional! That bottom decor looks really clean, I don't believe you did it with hand tools alone!

LiraNuna

I've had a bag of decorative cut nails sitting in a drawer for two years waiting for something like this to come along.

Frank Costa

Love the lid detail/moulding and the “apron” (is that what it’s called ?) Are these finishing nails? Really appreciating getting back into your roots and working on building furniture projects

Vasileios

If you pick your boards carefully, you can get some good wood there.

Rex Krueger

There will be plans the Wednesday after the video comes out. Free for you!

Rex Krueger

Forged-head cut nails from Tremont nail co. Available on Amazon.

Rex Krueger

Love these sort of projects. Doable with affordable wood and basic tools and a very functional piece of furniture.

Mike Griffin

I am really excited about this and hope there will be plans i have been looking for one of these at estate sales. But i would love to build one even more.

Lordasshat

I looks really nice!

Robert A Carbo

I'm glad we're back to furniture building!

Evan Askins

So which type of nails did you go with and where did you get them?
