Early Access Video: French Winding Sticks

Friends:

This week, we have a lovely little project: Andre Roubo's winding sticks. They're very different than the ones you're probably used to, but they're easy to make and they don't cost anything. Just a fun afternoon in the shop.

As I mention in the video, I'm taking a (desperately needed) two weeks off. I'll still be around. You can message me and find me on the Discourse; I'm just not going to make any videos. I'll be back to normal production in early January.

As usual, the plans are being drawn and will be posted here and on the Discourse forum on Wednesday morning.

Happy Holidays and the warmest New Year's wishes from my family to yours!

Early Access Video: French Winding Sticks

Not a solution to the OP problem, but a safer approach to using brass screws especially in hardwood. Drill the pilot hole as planned then drive in a steel screw and remove it. Then drive in the brass screw. The steel screw won’t break (probably) and cuts threads for the brass screw making it easy to drive.

Wayne Precht

One might also be able to use some variety of spring plungers for the pins on these sticks. Your videos are great!

Alex Hedegard

Enjoy your time off Rex! It is well deserved, I appreciate how you have helped your community navigate this past year. You have given me some confidence to tackle a few woodworking projects I would have never attempted for fear of failing. You showed me that failing is how we learn and to view them more like little setbacks. It took the pressure off of this Enneagram 2, wing 3 (https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-descriptions , if you are not familiar with the Enneagram personality profile). I bit off a bit more than I could chew this Christmas, when I decided to make a Crokinole Board for my family as a gift. I felt like I did a “ Rex” and went down the research rabbit hole for a week before I even went to my workshop. I made two boards so I could learn on one and hopefully make fewer mistakes on the second. The overall experience was educational, rewarding and really taxed my woodworking knowledge and skill set. The end product, though not perfect, is something I am extremely proud to give as a gift. Thank you for what you do. Enjoy watching The Mandalorian, we should discuss after you are done! This is the way. - Marty

Thanks Rex, I love your projects and your videos. Congratulations on finding the old winding stick. You are probably one of only a handful of people in the country who could recognize it for what it is. I would stay and heap a bunch more praise on you, but I have to get on EBAY and CRAIGSLIST and search antique tools.

Patrick Voitik

Why are French winding sticks more complicated fussy and hard to get? Have you met the French?

Eric Paisley

Correct on both accounts

Bill Brisky

MUCH more affordable.

Amy Holderness

Rex Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...you should enjoy your well deserved vacation. When you get back I will be jonesing for a " Rex Fix"

The Super-wrench Garage

Mandalorian is awesome be ready for some surprises! My kids and I watch it every week. I have spoken

The Super-wrench Garage

Rex has spoken!

The Super-wrench Garage

Well, full disclosure, I'd just used my winding sticks on a warped board a day or two before your post, so it was fresh on my mind. If I'd just run across a photo, I don't know that I'd have figured it out. Seeing it in your video just screamed "tool!", which was a big hint. :)

Bill Smithem

Honestly? I hate it. It's the only reason I didn't use the Joiner's bench on this build and I find the thing to be a total pain the ass. I can't wait to do the next vise-squad just so I can ditch this thing.

Rex Krueger

For sure!

Rex Krueger

See? Creative problem-solving! Well done!

Rex Krueger

I was totally kidding about the face.

Rex Krueger

Well, I'd say that's your fault for making 12! That's over-ambitious!

Rex Krueger

It was something like that.

Rex Krueger

That sounds lovely! (And expensive!)

Rex Krueger

Yes, just not the deluxe version. The cheaper one. https://lostartpress.com/collections/books/products/with-all-the-precision-possible-roubo-on-furniture

Rex Krueger

I amazed that you get the idea so fast. It took me a second!

Rex Krueger

It is useful for quickly knowing the center of your sticks and matching them to the board. Like you said, not necessary.

Rex Krueger

So, I see you using the twin screw. How's it feeling?

David Hamilton

Merry Christmas and have a good break!

Steve Symes

Merry Christmas Rex and family! See you in '21.

Mike

Thanks Rex. I was able to drill homes around the screw and dig it out with a point. I then re-drilled the hole and placed a dowel into it. It worked perfectly.

Steve Alderete

Merry Christmas, Rex! Enjoy your break.

Fred Gosbee

You're going to have to work around it. It's not coming out. You might be able to just skip that screw (if there are more than 2) or move the hinge a little bit. Stuff like that is SO frustrating, but it happens to everyone and you have to get creative. On the subject of brass, I love it, but it's MUCH softer than steel. The hole much be deep, but also a bit wider. You might need to bump the size up a 64th. You should also lube the threads with wax or bar soap. Many people don't realize that screws often break from heat buildup during driving. Reduce the friction and that goes away. I also like to pre-thread my hinge screws. I run them in and out once without the hinge and then install the hardware.

Rex Krueger

Rex, enjoy your well deserved break! This is the way.

Bill Hedge

Thanks Rex, I finish my shooting board today from your video. Love it. Merry Christmas. Happy New Years.

Douglas Sutton

Thank you for the video Rex. As everyone has pointed out already you should enjoy you vacation as much as you can. We'll still be here when you come back and maybe have some of the projects caught up. Bless you and yours, have a great holiday and be safe.

Matt Evans-Koch

Good stuff as usual Rex Merry Christmas

Bill Previte

Could do friction fit pins, like those on wooden Japanese knife saia.

Kyle Mitchell

Rex-Another informative video and something I’ll look into doing down the road a bit. Just finished the sharpening station and I’m doing the advanced shooting board next, then a mallet. Hope you enjoy a much deserved break. A Blessed Christmas and New Year to you and your family. Be safe!

Sean O'Neill

Can I ask a question totally off the subject? I am building a small cabinet using red oak. I was putting in a brass screw for the hinge. The screw breaks in the whole ( I did a whole plenty deep). It is a #6 x 3/4” screw. I was screwing it in using a screwdriver. I do not know what to do. Thanks.

Steve Alderete

Merry Christmas Rex! Thank you for all you have given us this year. I am looking forward to what your future holds in store for us.

Jim Williams

Happy Christmas man!

Gareth McMahon

I love anything that combines history and woodworking. Thanx for the video. Winding sticks have been on the top of my to-do list for a while. I'm now going to make this version instead. I still need to get my shop built and bench made tho'. Maybe if Congress gets off their ass and passes the stimulus, I can get off my ass and get the shop finished.

Michael Bennett

Well, those are some interesting winding sticks, I dont have a set yet so maybe I should give these a try, I mean 2 types of sticks in one build, what could go wrong? Also I kind of feel like maybe I want to see in the book where it says you have to make that face, cause it sounds a little sketchy. Enjoy your holiday Rex, family is wonderful and spending time with them is even better, although I will not be joining you in watching the mandalorian (if thats how its spelled), I tried to get into that show and just couldn't do it, I guess its not the way for me. I love History so tools out of history as well as an explanation on how they were used is super cool thank you for that.

The Poor Man

Thanks Rex - I enjoyed the learning session as always. Enjoy your down time, enjoy the holidays, and enjoy the time with the family. And enjoy the Mandalorian. I have spoken. Cheers!

Have a great Christmas holiday, Rex! And this was a great video. Again. My next two Saturday mornings will be reruns and the forum - I gotta get my fix in somehow. ;)

Jeff Stauffer

Wow, yet another project on the table! Haven't even finished the London Handles yet, though I've got 7 out of 12. I'll have to pickup some walnut when I get the maple I already need on Monday. Think I'll make one stick out of Maple, and one out of Walnut, same as my current winding sticks. Hmm, might even just make legs for my current sticks! Have great Christmas! Recharge the batteries, enjoy the "Mando", it's a good one.

William Allen

Seller: ”I wonder what this is, lets say ten bucks and see if anyone buys it” - notices Rex as the buyer ”Dammit!” ;)

Henrik Ubbe

Well done, as usual. Have a merry and restful holiday! BTW, I bought the Roubo book in the large format. It must be 16" tall, filled with all the plates and amazing information.

Bill Brisky

Thanks for another excellent video, Rex. Enjoy the vacation!

Alex Lopatka

Cool tool. Enjoy your break and Happy Holidays!

Rick Prosser

Hey Amy, this is the book mentioned in the video. https://lostartpress.com/collections/roubo-translation/products/with-all-the-precision-possible-roubo-on-furniture Luckily, it's a fair deal cheaper than the other option.

Chris Miller

And enjoy your break. Well deserved.

Amy Holderness

Another stellar video. Loved it. Question, is this the book mentioned? https://lostartpress.com/collections/roubo-translation/products/deluxe-roubo-on-furniture

Amy Holderness

Thanks for sharing.

Charles Hampton

Thanks for the video Rex. It’s great to see that the old ways are still valid today. Enjoy your well earned break and I wish you and yours the compliments of the season. Stay safe and keep well.

Andrew Waddington

I've never seen one before, but I knew what it was the moment I saw it. My extremely plain set of winding sticks is a perfectly straight MDF offcut split in half to make two equal length sticks. They work perfectly. I recognized why the feet were there because I've used random objects, usually nails, to lift the edges of the sticks off rounded boards, though I've never thought to make something attached to the sticks. The trick with the rabbet plane has never occurred to me (maybe because I don't have one yet?)... it's a great idea. Enjoy the vacation - you deserve it. Thanks for all the great content this year. Looking forward to 2021. Happy Holidays!

Bill Smithem

Happy Holidays, Rex and everyone! I love the design, and it would prevent me from constantly thinking my winding sticks are pieces I can use for other projects! I see some sticks with an inlay dot or similar mark in the center of them board- is that useful (it's clearly not required).

Geoffrey Wilson

Enjoy your well deserved rest. Happy Holidays to you Rex and your family!

Will Bonner

Thanks for another great video and shop tool idea. Happy Holiday Rex!

Robert A Carbo

Thanx again Rex. You just sit back, relax, and enjoy your vacation. We'll see you again next year. Happy Holidays...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Excellent, excellent video!

Thomas Hverring

Thanks, love the history you give with tool building. The Mandalorian is for sure one of the best show out there lol.

Denis Dionne

This Is The WAY.

Kelly D West

Happy Holidays, Rex and all y'all!

Thomas Hverring

That use of the rabbet plane is amazing! I guess that Roubo guy knew what he was doing, after all ;).
