Early Access Video: The Advanced Shooting Board

Friends:

This week, I'm teaming up with a surprise guest to bring you a totally re-vamped shooting board design. If you're sawing boards by hand, you need a good shooting board, but they aren't easy to build.

Well, I've got a design that's sturdy, reliable, and easy to dial-in for perfect 90 degree ends. I've re-thought my own shooting board from the ground up to make this one as useful and practical as possible!

Also, I know I owe several people responses to personal messages. I've been swamped with shooting, plan drawing, and book edits and you'll need to be patient with me for a few days. I appreciate you all understanding.

As usual, the plans are being drawn now. They will be posted here and on the Discourse Plan Archive on Wednesday morning.

Happy Saturday!

Rex Krueger

Hi Rex, can’t seem to find the PDF plans for the advanced shooting board…?

Gary Zohman

That only happens on Wednesdays. If you watch Saturday-Tuesday, then you get it early.

Rex Krueger

Unable to see this video, says I have to wait till premier, odd!

WoodworkLearner

Hi Rex, great video and I like the collaboration and editing! I took a similar approach to shooting long stock with a short shooting board as you did, but took a different approach to sizing the rest piece. Since I made the board itself out of engineered sheets, I glued together an offcut from each sheet in order to get exactly the right height with no additional work. I really like the magnet approach to keeping them together and will probably add that to mine.

ConvenienceShout

How does getting James' plans work for you patreons? Presumably we still need to buy them?

A1BASE

:O Sorry Rex, I've got to try and build your guest's shooting board.

A1BASE

My two favorite woodworkers! This was a treat.

Wally Schmidt

It's nice to try and improve each one a little bit. I do and it (usually) pays off.

Rex Krueger

It's a disposable tool. No escaping it.

Rex Krueger

You've got two to pick from!

Rex Krueger

You know, something's up with YouTube and volume. For me, the two sections are well-balanced. I certainly don't need to adjust volume. But many people tell me that the into music is too loud. It isn't for me, but I believe what other people are saying. There's more to this and I'm going to need to figure it out.

Rex Krueger

Wednesday morning!

Rex Krueger

Patience is key, but you get fast over time. It's all practice.

Rex Krueger

Once you build a shooting board, you'll never be without one again.

Rex Krueger

I wanted to reference that gag in this video, but I figured I would confuse too many people.

Rex Krueger

You're not a broken record at all. These videos are HARD. Getting praise from my community keeps me going!

Rex Krueger

I'm sure we will. James is the best.

Rex Krueger

That would be hilarious!

Rex Krueger

It's my pleasure. A LOT of thought went into this design.

Rex Krueger

Well, I'm just grad you're watching....and commenting!

Rex Krueger

Truly a great colleague!

Rex Krueger

I will get that link in there. As to formica, I don't think it would slide any better than melamine, but it would be more durable. Good choice!

Rex Krueger

I guess we all change!

Rex Krueger

Good one! (I should have gotten that joke in there somewhere).

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Awesome video as usual! My latest shooting board is still in good condition but it looks like my next one will be even better. Thanks!

Jeff Stauffer

Good timing. My shooting board is starting to get contrary. Time for a new one. Loved the collaboration. I'm a fan of both of you. Was great seeing you work together.

Mike Washburn

Just in time Rex, I really need to build a good shooting board! Thx!

Robert

Great collab! May I suggest next time you make a collab, normalize the audio on a whole-video scale? The volume difference between your portion and James' was very noticeable and I had to alter my volume to avoid discomfort. Not a big deal, but there's always things to improve!

LiraNuna

Awesome video Rex. I love seeing to different tools to accomplish the same task. Though, when I saw James build that board on the live feed through Patreon, I did mention he was building one shooting board to rule them all. Oh...and also it would cost almost double to build then the plane he uses with it. I cannot wait for the plans for both.

James Crandall

Loved the collaboration with James. You both have the best haircuts. This is going on my list of projects for this winter. Fortunately I'm not as busy you are. Keep up the good work. If you are doing woodworking by hand only, you have learned to be patient, so no apology needed if things are running a little late. Take care, stay well and Happy Halloween!

Matt Evans-Koch

Here is his 2nd channel: https://youtube.com/c/woodbywright2

James Crandall

There was some essential learning in that one! Keen to learn more.

Matt

James is a great guy. I do t really watch his channel much because I don’t do much hand tool work. My favorite gag on your channel was when you grabbed that clip of him on the ground drubbing away at something. I forget what he was flattening. Anyway, I’m glad you guys have fun together. Keep up the good work!

Jason Bailey

James has always been very ambitious and very talented, what I did was go watch his channel from oldest to newest He used to do power tool woodworking then decided to go all hand tool and that's when he started his channel. So it's a much smoother transition from beginner up to his current skill level.

Henry Amador

Thanks!

Chris and Julie Anne

Rex-I sound like a broken record, but this was a great video. I like that you’re combining the shooting board with a bench hook-very practical. The other features, including the moveable fence and magnets for the block for longer stock-great idea! And the banter between you and James is great, but even better, the collaboration you guys are doing. After your channel, his is the one I go to most. Now, I think I have some melamine shelves down the basement...

Sean O'Neill

Chris, I'll get back to you soon on that! I'm a little swamped right now. This video was a LOT.

Rex Krueger

Nice improvements to the shooting board. I love to see you two collaborating - I hope to see more of it.

Robert A Carbo

Cool video, Rex. Very inspiring. Also your secret guest! Who'd imagine Chuck Norris did woodworking!

Thomas Hverring

I love these videos! Any idea how we can ask Rex questions? I tried messaging but received no response. If anyone knows what brand/model is his drill press - or have your own recommendations - please let me know.

Chris and Julie Anne

Great video you two. Nice to see woodworkers helping each other. I appreciate the explanations, and reasoning behind the functional aspects of all the shop tools you design/build. Thanks.

Kevin S Thomas

I am addicted now to just watching via patreon!

The Super-wrench Garage

Rex, that is a fantastic video! A shooting board is on my list. I do find James a bit advanced for my skill level. Lets be honest at times you are above my skill level :) Yet the point of both your channels is to inspire us all to become better. Keep up the good work!

The Super-wrench Garage

I don't know about formica, but here's one of James' channels (he has two, I think): https://youtube.com/c/WoodWright

Geoffrey Wilson

Yeah I love **redacted** he's great!

Andrew More

A link to his channel in the description would be an awesome help for those that have no idea who he is (Those is me) Also, would a Formica surface on the sliding bed make it easier for the plane?

Hauptmann

What, James!?! No mention of “white oak” for either project? I’m shocked! 😏

Alton Plummer

He shoots, he scores!

steven davidson

Ohhh, I have a very specific hunch who that surprise guest is :D Two of my favourite hand tool woodworkers on YouTube working together is always fun!
