Exclusive Video: All the projects in my book!

Friends:

As the whirlwind of book-writing draws to a close, I'm taking a tour of every project in my new book. After working on this book for over a year, it's fun to get everything together in one place.

I hope you enjoy this top-secret look at my new book. No one else will see this stuff until the book comes out.

We will return to regular videos next week.

Stay safe!

Exclusive Video: All the projects in my book!

Comments

That's very generous of you! Let me look into that.

Rex Krueger

How about a video specifically for our sites - such as facebook where we can advertise your book?

Joseph Lorentzen

Congratulations on the book. Looking forward to being able to buy a copy. Will it be readily available in the UK? Obviously Amazon transcends barriers but sometimes the shipping is more than the item purchased.

Andrew Waddington

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Congratulations on the book chap ... I look forward to owning a copy!

Matt

Yes! More furniture making. Fun! Awesome stuff, Rex.

Amy Holderness

Very exciting Rex and I'm especially pleased to see how excited you are about this book. Though I'm enjoying the woodworking, I'm also very interested in your takes on experiential education--on building physical skills for budding woodworkers. It's really great that you've approached this as "a curriculum."

DC Carr

When starting out, it's easiest to listen to them, but as you gain experience, you'll have more weight behind your requests & requirements. :)

Jeremy Denslinger

I'll do my best. The publisher makes most of these decisions.

Rex Krueger

Wow! That is high praise. Thank you! And thank you for running this maker-space for kids. I would like to do that work, but I'm not good at teaching kids.

Rex Krueger

Rex, looking forward to what happens with your book. neat projects. I am always eager to read a wood working book and then get turned off by the complexity or need for certain tools to accomplish the projects.

The Super-wrench Garage

Sweet! Looking forward to the book. Thank You!

Donny Roberts

Hi Rex, I just want to thank you for all you do. I run a Maker Space for kids outside of Santa Fe, NM. One of the challenges I've had over the last 4 years has been how to bring woodworking to kids in a safe, but really engaging way. Seeing how you approach things has been really helpful. It seems that starting with a relatively safe tool, and building interesting projects around it is the right way to go about it. On a side note - I was using a saw the other day that's gotten a bit dull. I said something like "this is getting dull" out loud and my 9 year old daughter said - Rex shows you how to make other tools with that if you can't use it anymore. She watches the videos with me - and she talks about you like you're a person she interacts with in our daily lives. I thought that was an amazing "footprint" that you're leaving. I can only hope to something that wonderful. Thank you!

Simon Boses

Just ordered my copy. This sort of thing might be a perfect gift for a young person who is just getting started in life.

russell williams

Just so you don't sell yourself short You should have pre-orders for the book, which includes an advanced digital copy then that same price for the book alone once it's out in March You can sell the digital copy for the cost of the book, minus the materials once the book is released. Pre-orders could be available to Patrons first - or only. Obviously, up to you and the publisher to agree on all that, but I think that gives something to the Patrons, without selling yourself short here. Also. TAKE MY MONEY!!!! I really want to add your book to my shelf! :)

Jeremy Denslinger

If you have ever wanted to do a video about books for woodworkers, this would be a great time to generate hype!

Knathaniel C

Hm... my birthday is March 6th... might come in handy... Thank you for the preview. Love your enthousiasm.

Bas Noblesse

Congratulations!, I'm looking forward to the book. Just finished making the $30 workbench. Learned a lot in the process. Your videos are great and easy to follow. Really like your entire approach. There is tremendous value and knowledge here, being a patron just seemed to make sense. Super glad this is working out for you.

Mathew Lynch

I would for sure buy your book IFF it has a digital version. And I would like to see a demonstration about that extractor-of-foot-from-shoe tool - not yet clear for me how it works :D

Mihai Luţescu

I look forward to making that new low bench: I am finding pallets surprisingly useful in the meantime, but don't feel I'm quite up to making the low Roman bench at the moment.

Joel Hollingsworth

Rex, Joshua, thanks! I really appreciate the tips, if I make the roman bench I will definitely look into adding a couple of extra battens for a holdfast.

Marc Dupont

Congratulations! And definitely take him out there and show him all the cool stuff!

Andrew Parsons

BTW- that book may be just one thing I'll label to be given to my brand-new great-grandson when I depart! I got to hold him for the first time yesterday, and I had the strangest urge to take him out to my shop and show him my bench and stuff! :-)

Howard Tuckey

Boot jack?!! I just made 30+ boot jacks! Our church has a "Love in Action" ministry for Old-timers and shut-ins. My wife and I are both in our late 70s so we're included. It's really made a difference, so I thought I'd give something back in return. Got some pine 1x6 stock, and made a bunch of them. I sprayed them with one coat of poly, and turned them over to the folks running the group, who in turn handed them over to one of the younger kids' programs, where the kids painted/decorated them to hand out to the old folks group. It was a very rewarding experience indeed! Oh yeah- I made them with just a saw and a drill, and a bit of sandpaper, on my RK Joiner's Bench! Can't wait for that book! Do you need a Beta-reader/Proofreader?

Howard Tuckey

Thanks, John, I take some solace in that. Been guilty of all those things.

Steve

Rumble dot com has a large number of folks joining because of the "rumble" going on between factions in our America. It would be great for you to be aware of it so if anything becomes of this way of sharing your life, you have an alternative. We don't want to lose you.

Larry W Thayer

You may want to research rumble.com

Larry W Thayer

Was thinking about using it with my grandson as a Christmas present and doing the projects with him, but then the "March" thing came up. Drat.

Larry W Thayer

The term "wood butcher" is not necessarily a burn on your skills. We carpenters have long called ourselves wood butchers, perhaps with some irony. A carpenter can do fine work, though usually limited to finish and trim, but for many aspects of building finish is not a consideration the way that engineering, layout, appropriate connection and material selection are. Of course the guy hanging doors, setting windows and running trim might well be cursing the sloppy framer and staircases are another thing altogether;)

John Griswold

For some reason, I'm super excited about the spatula. (Probably because I need one)

Mike M

I'll second the battens. It does 2 things: stiffens the whole assembly, plus gives thicker sections to put the legs through so they're better supported. Also, if you're going to put in dog holes, don't use them for holdfasts unless you put battens under those sections to stiffen them and add rigidity. Otherwise the holes will get wallered out very, very quickly.

TwoRavens

Rex, thank you for giving us this sneak preview. It certainly is a privilege to be among the first to see these projects and get a first hand opportunity to see the direction of your book. Your simple but smart approach to woodworking is what got me all in for your channel. Plus, I dig your sense of humor, too. That’s why I wanted to become one of your patrons, because I wanted to continue to learn from and with you and I’m sure the new book will help many who wanted to try woodworking but lacked the confidence or believed it too expensive or beyond their abilities. So, the only thing that’s hard now is waiting until March! If you do autographed copies, I’d be honored to own one! Well done, my friend!

Sean O'Neill

I wanna be first in the queue for this book 😀👍🏻

The Deaf Maker

Quick tip: use a pair of 2x8s with battens underneath instead. Trust me.

Rex Krueger

We're totally on the same page!

Rex Krueger

I know! I cringed when I said it!

Rex Krueger

Oh yeah! My publisher is pretty big.

Rex Krueger

Good thing about having a publisher; they handle shipping. They're big, so international is no problem.

Rex Krueger

You're totally right! Case-work for the next book.

Rex Krueger

If I could do a book with Lost Art, I would die happy.

Rex Krueger

I don't have to ask her. You've been here for a bit!

Rex Krueger

You're VERY welcome! Thanks for sharing your story!

Rex Krueger

I watch your videos with enjoyment, there is an honest and enthusiastic approach to building that is very contagious. My previous comment regarding the drop leaf table forensics, I suggested you were credible, and hopefully that was taken in the vein it was meant, a compliment, not a cynical response suggesting you have something to prove. My Grandfather was a premier wood carver, the body of his work is in a museum, but he made functional furniture pieces beautiful, not merely art pieces. The sadness is, I did not avail myself of his talents when I could. A buddy with a warped sense of humor, calls me a wood butcher. There is little I cannot do, but making it pretty is perhaps my cross to bear. Years ago, I ran into a man who was working as a docent shipwright for an nonprofit educational program, and we got to talking about woodworking. He said that his father was a carpenter and tradesman, and also taught shop in the schools. His father had always tried to engage him in woodworking, but he was reluctant. After his father's death, he discovered his father had set aside a chest for him, with instructional props that he could use to discover woodworking. The work he was doing would make his father proud. I love books, and I see you doing what the shipwright's father did for him, giving him the opportunity to keep skills previously necessary for survival, and in danger of being lost to the high tech demands of our current society, alive and highly valued. Thank you.

Steve

"Once this book is out of my hair..." I actually snort-laughed.

Colby Allred

I made a bootjack earlier this year because I simply cannot take off my knee-high cowboy boots by myself without one.

Stephen Cannon

Great news! I love the projects, they look very approachable! I like the workbench you were showing, I was actually just designing/thinking about building a roman-style workbench based off of your $30 bench, except using a 2x12 instead of laminated 2x4's. I'm between building that or a Japanese-style planing board with some western influences (such as dog holes and possibly a vise of some type) for apartment woodworking.

Marc Dupont

That is a great project list. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of the book.

Scott Masson

Rex, when you put your new book on the shelf next to all your other books by authors who poured their love of woodworking onto paper, I do not doubt that it will feel comfortably at home, another gift to the future.

Mike Maddin

Thank you for the sneak peek of the book projects. Got mine preordered as soon as you mentioned it. Loved the comment about getting the book out of your hair. Having the same hair cut as yourself I have to chuckle at people's reaction when I say it to them. Some laugh and some are not sure if they should comment. As you well know, you may see your manuscript several more times during editing but it will be March before you know it. Take care and have a great weekend.

Matt Evans-Koch

Alright, great news. I will be keeping my eyes open for the book

Pierre Lenoci

Good news all round. Stay safe.

mw moore

I agree Andrew I can see a book series although Rex might be running for cover right now at the thought of it 🙀

Wayne

Sign me up for the book!! I just (finally!) finished your woodturning book and I really enjoy your writing. Your style does not change from who you are on your videos to the writer/author. Very much looking forward to the premier of your book.

Wayne Kitt

Spectacular. As a beginning woodworker, right up my street. 2 places where I, and I suspect many others, ran headlong into issues in early learning: sawing straight and hand planing. The first really has to be dealt with for beginners, but i wonder if the latter is really for "intermediates" and can be kept away from beginners. My thinking is coming from being an educator and more specifically an online educator. Users do need to build skills, even more complex ones, but the challenge is how do you structure online curriculum (when you can't monitor the user/user can't ask for help when actually trying skills) to keep rather than lose new woodworkers. The first part of the solution to learning to saw straight: get a sharp saw in the new users hand ASAP (bypass acquiring and doing up old saws - intermediate skill) e.g. get the Dewalt or Japanese saw in the user's hand then get them learning to use them to cut straight. Planes - acquiring, doing up and learning to use are all a challenge - delay in initial projects/,mark as an intermediate task/delay for beginners. Anyway, spectacular. I can't imagine anyone more qualified or more capable at developing new woodworkers - keep going. Lots and lots of thanks for all you do.

John Morrison

I can't wait to buy the book. I think it will make a great present for someone interested in starting in woodworking. I really enjoyed your content and approach as you've shown that you don't need a workshop and every tool ever invented to start and enjoy woodworking. I also like how your projects are practicable and, like the desk organizer you made your wife, show how uncomplicated wood working can be. Thank you for your content and hard work!

Paul Ballmann

Excited to see it coming out. It took forever for my book to get published. Welcome to the "published" club. BTW - you said "once this books stuff is out of your hair" - what hair... lol

Kirk von der Heydt

I really hope that the book will be available in print form for those of us living in the EU. If I can be of any assistance in getting the books to your viewers in EU please PM me at the discourse platform (Rasmus_V).

Rasmus V.

Very cool. Very excited to see the book when it comes out - I think it will be very helpful for a lot of folks getting into woodworking. Thanks for doing it. I am also looking forward to some furniture making - yeah!

Robert A Carbo

Out in March? Perfect just in time for my birthday. I just hope it will be available in the UK?

The Deaf Maker

A Boot Jack?!?!?!?! Something so simple, yet a game changer for me. Congratulations on finishing the manuscript. I look forward to the book coming out (projects to build with my son).

Brendan Langord

Sounds a very worthwhile project. A digital version would be great for those of us in the wider international community when getting stuff from the US is often difficult, with supplier not wanting to accept overseas orders, and when they do, often very high delivery costs, especially in the Covid world.

David Coxon

Great book teaser...can't wait for the book. It'll make a nice birthday present.

Kevin S Thomas

Because my woodworking 'shop' is outside on the porch, I'm starting to shift over to my indoor craft for the winter, which is sewing clothes (a # sewingforhumans channel might be coming?) ... but I do as Dain does — every Saturday morning I sit with my coffee and learn a little more about woodworking with Rex. I really appreciate the amount of attention that you gave to staked furniture in this presentation and in the book that's coming — and I'm fascinated by the redesign of the low workbench. You've got my gears spinning, truthfully. I've got a crack in my low workbench, and I might be able to improve it by adding that notch in the right place; it would relieve the stress on the bench, and it would let me do whatever fancy workholding you've got cooked up for that spot! The single chunk that appears to be missing from this setup is casework. I really appreciated your video on the casework cabinet that you did for food storage in pandemic times, and the moldings you made to fancy it up a bit. Maybe there's not space for that material in THIS book, but I agree with Ramin, there's a second book here with some new projects — you've covered carving, staked furniture, open boxes (the tool-tote), and geometry. But book 2 should cover some case-work, box-lids, hinges, and panel doors (frame and panel? panel and stile?), and how to do that sort of stuff... but maybe with only 24 tools, 12 of which you build yourself. OK, maybe this book is Book 3, and book 2 is how to make the 12 tools that make book 3 possible. :-)

Andrew Watt

I wonder if the publishers thought that "12 tools" would like sound way too many to some people. (Hah, little do they know...) I'd be interested to see the list of 12 though...

Royston Shufflebotham

Eagerly awaiting for your new book

Kevin Esses

Lex Rex, for short.

Henrik Ubbe

Can't wait! It will probably take about a month for me to get it here, in Greece, but I'm sooo looking forward to it! I also smell a "part 2: Cranking it up a notch" sometime in the future :)

Ramin Chalili

I will definitely be getting a print copy, even if we get a digital one. I need to start my woodworking book library where better to start than with this one.

Jesse Woodring

Fantastic! Can't wait for the book! Idea for patrons: first crack at a limited 100 book run Lost Art Press published Rex-signed edition? :)

Damion Stodola

Yeah, I'm a smartass... just ask my wife.

Bill Smithem

Can I get an autographed digital copy? :)

Garden stake? More like vampire stake, Van Helsing! Seriously though, can't wait for the book to come out - my Saturday morning routine once I wake up is get the kiddo breakfast and put on cartoons, brew myself coffee, and watch your newest video on Patreon. You put out the best content of all the makers I follow, and am looking forward to purchasing your book to help keep you funded and pumping out videos!
