Have YOU done the Community Project?

Friends:

Our brother in the craft A1BASE has been hosting some exciting community challenge projects over on the Discourse Forum. His first was a handy single dovetail and the community responded with some excellent examples of this useful joint.

Last month, he challenged us all to make the pinned bridal joint. The rules stipulated that the joint had to be held together with no glue; only the pin to lock everything in place. Again, the community came out in force and delivered a selection of beautifully executed joints along with lots of advice for how to improve it.

Regrettably, I was not present in either of these challenges, so I’ll rectify that today with my take on the pinned bridal joint.

If you haven’t done one of these challenges yet, it’s great fun and a great chance to build your skills. Here’s one picture of mine, but I’ve got several more pictures as well as details over on the Discourse thread: https://rexkrueger.discourse.group/t/community-project-2-pinned-bridal-joint/2447

Even better, the next challenge, the “butterfly” key is already live. Get a jump on it here: https://rexkrueger.discourse.group/t/community-project-3-butterfly-joint-moved/2868/2

If you’ve been thinking about joining the community, now’s the time. It’s included with your membership and it’s very easy, even for the technically challenged.

Indeed!

We saw a sign once while we were out walking. "Bridal path closed. Seek alternate routes". The mind boggles.

Funny enough, as soon as I saw this I was thinking about a try square as well as a T square. I think adding a simple piece to an edge would allow a simple butting up and quick reference. Thanks for the heads up on what to watch out for :)

I'm glad a link was included. I couldn't figure out what this forum was everyone was talking about lol. I'm glad I did figure it out!

Brandon L Hays

It is the latter. I KEEP messing that up!

Rex Krueger

Been in the hospital, so I haven't been too active in the shop lately. But a question: Is it a BRIDAL joint, or is it a BRIDLE joint? I learned it as the latter.

Howard Tuckey

Man, truer words have never been spoken! Those mess-ups are the best teacher.

I decided to make a large try square for the challenge and have the drawbore pull the beam in place. I marked my parts, cut the housing dado, then spent half an hour paring the dado because I'd cut it 1/8" too narrow. I filed it true and went on to pin the joint. First pin went in fine, last pin blew out the endgrain. I cut the offending part off and spent an hour truing up the square with planes and scrapers. If you don't try, you won't learn anything from it.

Fred: don't sell yourself short. You might be surprised what you can do.

Rex Krueger

That would be so much harder! Come give it a try!

Nic Beurskens

Ha! I couldn't do that with a CNC machine and a team of programmers. Nice work. Where are the nails lol?

Fred Wolsey

You might surprise yourself. You never know!

Rex Krueger

Time to metaphorically fall flat on my face and have fun doing so. 😎
