Early Access Video: Design and Build a Big Piece

Friends:

You've all followed the odyssey of my kitchen cupboard; the 2-week project that got stretched over 5 ridiculous weeks because of Covid and a million other things. I was watching over the videos for that build and I realized that they to a terrible job of showing the big picture of designing and building a big piece that you're really going to use.

So, I've distilled the whole thing into one video. This is WAY more than just a summary of what you're already seen; I go deep into the design process, the aesthetics of the piece, and they way I used standard stock sizes to cut down on processing components. I've also mad the build something you can watch in one sitting. If you need more details on any part, the individual videos are still there, and Nate made them into a convenient playlist!

Just like usual, the plans are still being drawn. I will release them FREE to Patrons on Wednesday morning, both here and on the Discourse Plan Archive.

 Happy Saturday!

Early Access Video: Design and Build a Big Piece

I am afraid you will find dust under the cabinet anyway. Personally, I prefer open spaces under furniture so I can sweep or vacuum there once in a while. Anyway, great piece.

I think paper and pen is GREAT. You just need something.

Rex Krueger

Thanx, I had no idea that existed...

You can run any of the SketchUp for Web editions in a browser that has Linux builds (ie, Chrome, Firefox etc.)

Man, have I been doing things wrong here. Whenever I get an idea to build something, (well, when the wife tells me what she wants), I start out the same as you, on pinterest, and then I just start building. No plans, and just learn as I go. So often I buy either too much or not enough materials, and I always have to go back for one or two little things, (good thing that I live very close to a DIY store and there's two near my work). Though Sketchup doesn't work for me (it's not available on Linux). But if I ever do make a plan, I use old fashioned pen(cil) and paper. Nothing fancy, just some quick lines (often not even straight) and some measurements of what I think it needs to be. And then, even that might change during the build. Though it has been ages since I've build anything, and I think only one big project is still in use.

I actually did a whole video about it 2 weeks ago. It covers everything!

Rex Krueger

That's very nice of you to say!

Rex Krueger

I used Videoscribe. It's actually a white-board animation tool. I kind of hacked it to make an animated intro. It was hard, but it worked!

Rex Krueger

It's kind of amazing how much you can change mid-project.

Rex Krueger

Honestly, I had a pretty great time!

Rex Krueger

There is something about the big stuff that really teaches you a lot.

Rex Krueger

I'm glad I was on time!

Hi Rex, always great at teaching in general and a nice looking pc done by hand of course. I am interested in the water based color medium you used, the brand etc. Take care

Clayton Hartig

I love how this video ties everything we've been seeing for months into one cohesive whole. I think your channel just leveled up.

Tom Weinstein

Hi Rex, totally unrelated question but: what program did you use to animate the "Rex Figures it Out" logo?

Mike M

Thanks Rex. Really enjoyed the way this looked at the whole project and the process. I also liked the advise about having plans but not being a slave to them. I look forward to your releases. Educational, informative and entertaining.

Isn't it satisfying when almost everything you've been putting out over months can be put in context? Tools? Check. Tactics? Check. Lovely finished product that shows how stuff all comes together? Check. Hope it's as much fun for you watching the fruits of your labor as it is for me soak up the knowledge.

Funny, I just finished making a swing set for my daughter’s birthday as my third woodworking project and while it’s sturdy, I made plenty of mistakes I’ve learnt from such as not thinking of cutting things in three dimensions but taking it as individual cuts. The channel definitely helped me to work on it. First two projects were the three tool bench and the Rabbet Plane. Definitely learnt a lot from a big project.

Amazing. I am literally in the middle of planning to build 2storage beds with lift up mechanisms, and rex brings out a video on planning big projects . Sweet :)
