Early Access Video: Japanese Cutting Gauge

Friends:

This week, we're expanding our collection of homemade tools with this Japanese cutting gauge. This handy little tool lets you mark a line AND cut it deeply at the same time, eliminating the need for a second knife cut. It's a great little time-saver and a great skill-building project that costs pretty much nothing.

I love making tools like these because they're every bit as good as the tools you would buy, but they're cheaper and you learn a lot.

At the end of the video I mention that I'm taking a week off, and that's half true. I need to do a bunch of non-video stuff next week so I won't be taking any actual time off. I also recorded a second video this week, and that will be up for Patrons next week.

As usual, the plans are not drawn yet. They will be posted here and on the Discourse plan archive on Wednesday.

Have a great weekend!

Early Access Video: Japanese Cutting Gauge

Comments

I remember the process, but--obviously--not the terminology! Many thanks--I'll use the 3 mm. All the best and thanks for all the good stuff. :)

Michael Eleftheriou

If 3mm is what you have, then that sounds fine! (But you want to anneal it, cut it, shape it, harden it and then temper it. The order really matters).

Rex Krueger

I made mine this morning out of a bit of beech I had lying around, and it's come out nice, I think. I just need to do the cutter: I have some 3 mm and 5 mm 02 steel I used to make a couple of plane irons last year: do you all think the 3 mm would be overkill? I'd cut, shape, temper and anneal it.

Michael Eleftheriou

It's true that we all mess up. I guess we take it in stride as we get better, but I still get really mad at myself.

Rex Krueger

Rest up and come back even

Hey Rex, great video as always! Just had some time to catch up and I really appreciated the part where you showed you screwed up. That had me rolling!! 🤣 That helps and let’s noobs like me know that all my mistakes aren’t just me, they happen even to skilled people! It’s very encouraging, especially as I continue to learn and grow with woodworking (otherwise known as “makes tons of mistakes while learning and growing!”). 👍. Hope you are enjoying the vacation!!

Brian Benson

Amazing!

Kenneth Lind

Vacation! Woohoo! Enjoy yourself.

William Allen

We understand but will miss you !!

Pete Graham

That's a great tool. Have a great vacation

GREAT VIDEO!!! I love the idea of this cutting gauge and looking forward to making it. THANKS

Tony Softich

Might be able to cut in from the end and rotate the cutter 90 degrees for a fenced scratch stock from another piece of that saw. It’d also let you use up that backwards cut component.

Ethan Chitty

Wood might be sapele - looks like mahogany with flecks and fine streaks of black...

Mark R. Ferraro

Great job - just confused why first one would not work. Sure, the mortise/dado was backwards, but I would have tried it.

Mark R. Ferraro

Its mahogany.. and I'm glad Im not the only one to make goofs that make me wonder about my brain

Shawn D

Go take a Vacation Rex. Sincerely all of us

The Poor Man

So, the gauge is not symmetrical front-to-back. It's much longer in front (the part pointing towards you) if you flip it around, it will be too short to bear on the wood effectively. Believe me, I tried to make it work like this.

Rex Krueger

Great video :^) Take some time off! You can always updates us here and on Discourse. We'll be here (and there) :^)

Thomas Hverring

I'm not sure he would even need to that. Just turn the beam over and move left to right instead of right to left.

WhatMeWorry

Now my challenge is to adapt that design for a left-hander. I think it is a mirror image - Reverse the direction of the curve on the blade - oh and can I have your 'mistake' piece.

David Coxon

yes and not. He could have used the first one, but the blade would had to been re-seated to compensate for the 180 degree shift.

Jeremy Denslinger

Take the time off Rex. Might give some of us a little time to catch up😉

Jon Flak

I am going to start trying to use the return code: too many beers. It is probably useful in online reviews of products that don't perform up to expectations... :)

Stuart

I think I spent the first half of the video thinking ... I need to send Rex a message because there is a book that he really needs to read! My blood pressure went back to normal when he held up the book. I am glad to see he is also a book nerd and likely has an ample library. The second thing I would note is the gauge he built is in my opinion better than the commercial ones available at finer woodworking stores such as Amazon, Lee Valley, etc. because of the stepped fence design makes the stroke much more stable. I might have missed it in the video but the book goes into quite a bit of detail about the shape and placement of the knife to make the cut stable and less likely to wander.

Stuart

Awesome job! I am new to this so you taking a break gives me a chance to catch up! 8^)

Bill Finizia

Love the project, especially the putty knife blade. Going out to the back yard right now and begin the cutting project. And ... recharge, recharge, recharge. You've done plenty for us.

Richard Hengst

Always like that you aren't afraid to show that you mistakes -- like the rest of us. Definitely, going to make this one really soon.

Kirk von der Heydt

Excellent! Good instructions, humor, templates, and screw ups. What's not to like?

Rick Prosser

that's look a really nice project! Thanks Rex

Antonio Marcos Ferreira

So early in the video I was thinking, "I wonder if he's gonna mess up and call it out?"...and when ya held it up I saw the mortice difference...but I didn't think it'd make a difference. I appreciate calling out the mistakes...makes me feel better about mine. That's a great little gauge too.

Matt Mohon

I may not be following the design close enough but would it really matter if your wedge was on the other side?

WhatMeWorry

Great tool. I have an old one similar to that at our house up north. I've not seen or used it in a couple years.

Phil Rod

Absolutely, take two if you need too we aren't going anywhere! Great project as usual, Thanks.

Deron Kosloski

Funny and informative as usual. Take a knee Rex, Family First.

Kevin S Thomas

I can understand that everything that's going on is very demanding. And your health is way more important than this channel. So take all the time that you need to recharge your battery. We'll see you when you get back... BTW: Great video, once again. Just don't drink 'n shop in the future, this one had a good ending, but next time who knows, before you know it you could've bought a Chinook. Where are you going to park that? ;-)

Frans van Ballegooijen

hey mate take a rest, we'll be here :)

Kostas Karanatsis

Great video and I love that you show mistakes! Thanks!
