Early Access Video: Make moldings with basic tools.

Friends:

Many of us want to cap off our furniture projects with decorative moldings, but these can be expensive to buy or difficult to make. Whether you're a hand-tool or a machine-tool person, you're going to need a lot of specialized tools.

Or not!

In this video, I'm going to show you how to make 7 lovely molding profiles with just our basic Woodwork for Humans kit. Once you've got the basic techniques down, you might discover even more shapes. I'm sure I didn't cover them all.

Happy Saturday!

I will. I promise.

Rex Krueger

Scratch Stocks! Fits with the "for humans" focus.

Mark Diaz

thanks for the simple yet intuitive manner of explinations. im a bigginer yet with the luxery of retiring to afford the tools i have garage sale style that is. you have givin me a great direction of learning tool making that i thought was at a lowes or walmart and so on to find. again a simple but important thank you

James l Smith sr

No problem! You can see that I used molding to cover some less-than-amazing joints, so we all do it!

Rex Krueger

Another great video, Rex. I just happened to be struggling with how to finish off the office desk I'm working on - you might have seen that conversation in discourse about the top - and this comes in perfectly, as I've decided the easiest way is to just put molding around to cover up my beginner mistakes! :-) I do not want to spend the money to buy all that molding, so this is great. Thx again, man!

Brian Benson

... or use a section of your bull-nose moulding with sandpaper glued to it to smooth out your concave moulding.

Martin Hartley

Rough it out as a series of steps then make a convex moulding stick and glue sandpaper to it. Use that to finish off the concave moulding. Other possibility is to use a dowel the diameter you want and glued sandpaper.

Martin Hartley

*Discourse.

Rex Krueger

That's awesome! I hope you post it over on the Discord!

Rex Krueger

Well, a few other people have done it. That's how I'll figure it out!

Rex Krueger

You too!

Rex Krueger

You're so welcome!

Rex Krueger

It's true, but making it yourself seems pretty easy.

Rex Krueger

How to get rounded concave moldings?

stlmch

I am inspired to put my current project of a set of drawers for the back of my 4WD on hold once I get the frame built, and build the rabbet and grooving planes so that I can use them making the drawers. Decorative molding sounds good for my next project but I am not sure it would really fit with an overlanding 4WD.

David Coxon

Beeps are useful, except remember some people can also lip read!

David Coxon

Ok, not TOTALLY traditional, but similar enough for lotso uses. The central dip would be a v instead of a curve... ok, yippee another todo list..

James Boatright

Thanks. And the website is great, was just checking to see if there was a master list already prepared. In my short period of involvement, I have really enjoyed the videos. I am very inexperienced with woodwork and I am impressed at how well you simplify and bottom line everything while keeping an eye on the budget. Having a blast and can't wait to start the Roman Bench.

Brad Bowden

Hey Brad! Welcome! I guess I suggest going through them in order. There's a playlist. I'm also going to be redesigning my website soon and I think a lot of things will be clearer then.

Rex Krueger

Rex, I accidentally stumbled upon one of your youtube videos a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Started watching more and more and soon joined as a patron. Built a mallet and ready to tackle the next challenge. However, I have one request or question that is probably answered somewhere but I haven't seen it. Is there a list of the advised progression through the projects in the Woodworking for Humans? I am sure you have laid this out already but I haven't seen it and getting a little disoriented going back and forth from Youtube, RexKrueger.com and Patreon.

Brad Bowden

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I think for that I'd need a single molding plane. A hollow. But the rest of it is doable. I'd love to see someone do it.

Rex Krueger

a biiiiig like.

Mihai Luţescu

I wonder if I can figure out how to do a traditional Crown moulding with just your home made planes. It should be possible, Just set the guideboard make a 45゚ guideboard in clamp it on and move it down I think time to go play

Absolutely no one: Not a single soul: Rex: Im'ma make my own paint.

Great video , as always. Thanks Rex, hang in there...

Kevin S Thomas

I think I might have ordered that book!

Rex Krueger

I messed up and swore and Nate decided to have some fun.

Rex Krueger

This is very very good and helpful. Thank you again

Jonathan Tracy

Looking forward to the paint video. Linseed oil and paste wax is nice, but some jobs really need paint. Oh man, I can't believe how much good quality paint costs these days!

Martin Hartley

Great video! For making your own paint I can really recommend this book: "The Natural Paint Book" by Lynn Edwards. Recipes include ones made with soured milk or eggs and of course the good old linseed oil. I tried one on an IKEA bed with really nice results, and another one even on the walls in the attic.

Agnes

Nervous twitch.

Frank

I get that's what the beep is, just not sure what the whole bit is referring to!

Matthew Leigh

It was a Radio Edit LOL.

Matt Mohon

That was really good, but what happened at 12:55?
