Early Access Video: Perfect Miters by Hand

Friends:

I'll admit, things went a little sideways this week. I set out to make trim for my cupboard project, but part-way through, I got sidetracked by the need to make good mitered corners. This leg to jig-making and jig-refining and a whole bunch of miter-box madness that I was totally not expecting.

It's all in the video.

Hope you enjoy!

Early Access Video: Perfect Miters by Hand

I think stuff like that is great! I'm not a 3D printing guy myself, but that's only because of time. I think it's fascinating technology.

Rex Krueger

I like the use of the cutting board HDPE to build adjustable cutting guides, and this all synchronizes perfectly with my book mark at page 97 of "The Practical Woodworker", where he's talking about shooting and miter cutting. They show a similar example there using metal guides. I also like the look of those manufactured plastic guides that you said cost about $16. I have a couple 3-D printers, and while they would not fit in with the "woodwork for humans" theme, it did get me thinking more about the idea of designing parts for larger constructs. I especially liked the small guide tabs that fit into the groove running along the top edge.

Patrick Salsbury

Thanks for de video, Rex. Few weeks ago I bought a miterbox on Amazon and it's COMPLETElY out of square, ate least it was cheap, will keep it in the a shelf so I always remember not to buy precision/measure instruments without actually seeing them in person.

Tassio Lobo

Man, that's SO great to hear. People's enthusiasm is just so infectious!

Rex Krueger

Another great video, Rex. I just got some time to watch it and cracked up through half the video. Good stuff. 😂 And the tip in there about plastic cutting boards is great. Between the videos and the discourse groups/chats, I’m getting so much info that I can’t wait until I get some shop time again!

Brian Benson

I actually got that from Steve Ramsey ^^

Daniel Bohrer

I promise I will. If you have trouble with a project, go post a thread over on the Discourse. Many people would be happy to help you out.

Rex Krueger

Everyone sucks at miters; that's why miter saws are so popular.

Rex Krueger

A fair and useful point. I did mean HDPE.

Rex Krueger

Might as well. Cheapest source of HDPE I know of.

Rex Krueger

I will! It's honestly a lovely tool. I'm very much enjoying using it. Kunz tools used to be such crap...not this thing.

Rex Krueger

Pask is the man.

Rex Krueger

It's my pleasure....that being said, I would own one of those if only the other guy at the estate sale hadn't gotten to it first. I love stuff like that.

Rex Krueger

She's very patient, but I'm embarrassed at how long this is taking. Pre-covid, this would have been two weeks, two videos. Done.

Rex Krueger

That corny joke is actually very funny. I'm going to share that with James Wright.

Rex Krueger

You know what they say, they're called miters because afterwards you always say "they miter've been better". This project should take care of that ^^

Daniel Bohrer

Rex, this is great, but I seem to recall that the "customer" wanted the cupboard *weeks ago*, and it was supposed to be a simple, straightforward cupboard. How's your customer holding up?

Paul Thoma

That sounds like Pask Makes in his most recent video (Making Yosegi Plane Shaving Veneers - Scrapwood Challenge ep40)

Alexander

It's really sad I can't remember who it was that I was watching the other day who needed to cut a pair of 45゚ miters for something and he looked at the camera and he said no I haven't used my steel cast iron miter foot operated guillotine recently so let's just go use that and he went over to a device that makes your fancy Stanley miter Box look wussey and he put the piece of stock in it and filmed this giant pair of blades set at 45゚ slicing into the stock and cutting mirror finish perfect miters. I hate to think what sharpening those blades took, much less the incredible massive cost of something like that if you're not a super busy professional frame shop. Certainly not wood work for humans. Thanks for keeping it real.

James Boatright

Just make sure to wax your brass screws before you drive them, and still your pilot holes just a shade larger than normal. I've snapped enough brass screw to have learned those lessons the hard way.

TwoRavens

Say hi to the Kunz plane from me back here in Germany 😀.

Christoph Schmitz

Some of the "warehouse" stores, like Sam's Club and likely Costco's have multi-packs (different sizes) of those cutting boards at a pretty reasonable price. This pair of jigs now gives me more reason to pick up a package or two!

Howard Tuckey

You are most probably looking for HDPE (high density polyethylene) as opposed to LDPE (low density PE) which is also widely used.

stlmch

Good video! Keep up the good work! I've had an electronics project up on the shelf for 5 years and still unfinished... 2 weeks is just a pinch :D

Tõnis Terasmaa

I knew that extra plastic cutting board I picked up would come in useful at some point.

Rick Prosser

It might just be this weekends project

Mike Willey

This miter shooting jig will be the first jig of yours I actually build. I love the look of miters but I suck at building them. Good job, Rex!

A1BASE

I know! Sadly my shared workshop where I usualy do stuff is closed down due to corona, so now I have to build a joiner's bench for my basement first… :D

Daniel Bohrer

Well let's give this a try. Keep using your videos as reference materials for my projects. None have turned out very well but I have built some basic stuff. Keep posting new stuff.

James Fortner

I'm so glad to hear that. I kind of took a plunge with this one. I like it. I hope others do, too.

Rex Krueger

There will be a link, but everything in the newsletter appears here first, so Patrons don't need to worry.

Rex Krueger

That's what we're aiming for. Nate really knows how to take my basic idea and pump it up a notch.

Rex Krueger

My first attempt at a miter box went disastrously. This is much better design. Thanks

Mike Willey

Rex how do I sign up for your newsletter?

Jim Schultz

nice.

Dwayne

I busted up laughing at 1:40 into this video. Well done. I needed that.

Colby Allred

Really, it has many uses in the hand-world! I love it!

Rex Krueger

You get sidetracked. It's just the way it goes.

Rex Krueger

I did more than wince! Martin: solid brass screws are a god idea.

Rex Krueger

Credit cards are the best for glue, but I used all of mine! For shooting, nothing beats the new Stanley sweetheart low-angle jack. I think the low angle planes are WAY over-rated in general, but for shooting, that thing's a beast and it's about $100, which is very fair.

Rex Krueger

I'm glad people enjoy the bit of humor. These videos would be dry without it!

Rex Krueger

No reason to wait! It's SO easy. Honestly easier than a regular shooting board.

Rex Krueger

For real, though. Rex lets us all feel more ok about being human.

TwoRavens

Great video! I've used plastic cutting boards to make runners for table saw jigs. Great to see it has hand tool uses as well.

Mike M

What I REALLY like about this video is that your cabinet was mostly finished 2 weeks ago! I feel sooo much better about the projects my wife gives me and how long they take to get finished.

Bill Tims

When I saw that, I thought to myself that I am glad I used solid brass screws in my saw bench and various other fixtures. That, and they won't rust.

Martin Hartley

I saw the notification and started telling my wife about how one of the things I like about Rex is that he doesn't pretend he does everything perfectly every time... Hope you didn't damage the S&J too much Rex, I had to wince at that point!

Rob Weir

Great project (again) - I built a shooting board and found out the hard way that my Bailey/Stanley no 5 plane does not have flat sides in a shooting board so it does not cut plumb cuts... what brand/number plane would you recommend for shooting? Also you can use old credit cards to clean out and spread glue!

Adrian Abshire

Great video! Detailed instructions, with just the right amount of levity. Perfect balance.

Kevin S Thomas

Awesome project! I've been meaning to make a miter shooting board for months! :D
