Sneak Peek/Free Plans: Hot-Rod Tenon Saw

Friends:

Sometimes, I just want to mess with tools and not even bother actually making furniture. I love the adventure of a good build or restoration: the setbacks, the sudden surprising wins. It's all a thrill.

I'm already done with this week's plans: a paste-on template that will let you carve the nightmarish S+J handle into something elegant and comfortable. I'm trying to do a lot of free plans during the pandemic, so I won't be charging for these, but you all get them a week early!

If you'd like to use the plans, be sure to use the PDF (attached to this post) and not the JPG above.

I've added details and started a discussion thread over on the Discourse:  https://rexkrueger.discourse.group/t/hot-rodding-the-spear-and-jackson-backsaw/1487

If I were to adapt this template for a different saw (cutting slots for a plate and a spine and drilling holes), what is the angle between the tooth line and the handle (the "straight" part you grab with three fingers)? Are there any other dimensions to care about?

My comment below was supposed to be reply to your question.

If you are cutting joinery, you need a small hand saw. Either a Tenon saw, or a Japanese style saw.

Hey Rex. I bought a Milwaukee (yes I like this brand) small handheld reciprocating saw instead of getting a hand saw. Hoping it saves me time. Do you think I will still need a hand saw or am I good with just changing the blade on my powered saw when needed?

Terrence Scott

I love that plane tote template. I use it.

Thank you for saying so!

Thank you!

Nice use of color for the cut/bevel instructions!

@ The Poor Man James Wright had the link for plane totes on one his YouTube videos. Rex, this is too funny. Maybe someday I will make one. Thanks! I love your stuff!

This project is great. I can say nothing feels better than a handle you shape to your own hand.

Lee Valley has published several pdfs with plane tote templates. Search the web for: plane tote template leevalley, and you will find them. They seem to have taken down the main article so be sure to stash the PDFs.

I kind of wonder if these could be modified to be a plane tote for a wooden plane. I have one or two old wooden planes that have handles similar to this, but they are to beat up to be restored so I want to build a couple wooden planes that are almost exact copies of them because I really like the way they feel and I want to capture the antique vibe while building something I can use for a lloonngg time.
