Early Access Video: Cabinet Doors in One Day

Friends:

Are you having trouble keeping up with projects AND homeschooling your kids? I am! Some days, it's all I can do to get into the shop and knock out an hour of work.  I've learned to be efficient in ways I never imagined.

But we're all adapting to this new world and some things need to just get done fast. I was thinking about that as I designed and built these cabinet doors for my kitchen cupboard. They're in a simple but lovely Country Furniture style and they're VERY sturdy. They're also quick to build and they use the regular Woodwork for Humans tools.

I had a lot of fun making these and I hope you enjoy the video.

Happy Saturday!

Glad you like it!

Great Material. Building case stuff with hand tools is super valuable.

John Conti

Most crown molding is around 10$ per 12' stick here...

Bigguy's Army

Not around here; it's ALL cheap.

Rex Krueger

Ha!

Rex Krueger

I would use a gimlet if i owned any! They are the perfect tool. The awl only really works for this in pine and other soft woods.

Rex Krueger

While their prices are not WWFH friendly in the slightest, I love Tremont Nail Co. for their cut nails. They look awesome enough that painting isn't required, and especially when I'm going for a period look they give a nice touch.

TwoRavens

I'd love to see more like this, Rex. I'm a huge fan of early American and especially Shaker style furniture, which lends itself well to hand tools.

TwoRavens

The awl isn't to pre-drill the holes itself. It gives your drill bit a spot to bite into so it doesn't wander off when you start drilling the pilot holes. Anything you've got that can put a dent in the wood for your drill bits/gimlets/augers to bite on and help keep them in place will work. When I'm drilling in softwood I'll sometimes just use a ballpoint pen to make the divots. The balls are made of carbide, so they're plenty hard!

TwoRavens

I really like this series, makes complex projects more accessible. I have a question, I'm pretty new to woodworking and I see you use an awl to pre-drill a hole for the screws. I have a set of three gimlets but no awl and I was wondering, since both seem to do similar things for the same reason, when would you use an awl and when a gimlet?

Agnes

My thoughts are that each board will work on it's own and won't affect the other boards too much.

Frans van Ballegooijen

Nice cabinet! And just the right size for under the windows in our kitchen. Mayhap I'll try it! Couldn't help remembering my Granddad, though - My grandad always said, "When one door closes, another one opens." Lovely man, terrible cabinet maker.

Howard Tuckey

Oooo the molding episode is going to be nice, that jazz is all kinds of expensive!

Bigguy's Army

You're not kiddin!

Doorty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

I try really hard to not mention the little flaws when i show my work in real life. Most people don't notice and they don't need me pointing out things like that.

Rex Krueger

Yes! That’s me to a T! I love the pursuit, figuring it out, the challenge of me vs whatever the context. Repetitive, mindless tasks are the bane of my existence.

Brian Benson

Good creators are often times their worse critics. We see the small flaw and others see the beautiful whole piece.

Shanni Marmen

Me too. I enjoy figuring out HOW to do something, but once I’ve done that I hate the production worms of just knocking out another of the same thing.

A1BASE

Honestly, I never would have noticed if you didn't point it out. Lots of things are like that.

Rex Krueger

You're very kind! I'll take no credit for the design. I modeled them after the common "dry sinks" of Early American furniture. I love going with tested designs.

Rex Krueger

They are coming together well. Just before I added the doors, my wife looked at them and said "you know, it's already a very nice bookcase." So if you just did half the project, you'd have a bookcase.

Rex Krueger

Awesome! Do it!

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you like the handles! I'm glad I took the time to make them. I went with the simple hinges because they were cheap and my viewers seem to like cheap. I've never done barrel hinges; I should try them.

Rex Krueger

Thank you! Just one more to do! (Thank God; I hate long projects).

Rex Krueger

I wonder if more and narrower boards would be more or less stable. I honestly don't know.

Rex Krueger

Thanks for saying so!

Rex Krueger

Makes me kinda wish I hadn't nailed it together! Also, stained wood won't look good in my kitchen. You gotta design for your space.

Rex Krueger

You should do a thread over on the Discourse. I bet we could all learn from that adventure!

Rex Krueger

You can do it so fast in this style. It's not the prettiest, but it really gets the job done.

Rex Krueger

I think that's going to be a good video. Unfortunately, I need to paint this thing. Way too many nail-holes.

Rex Krueger

Looks like the handles are not level, it took me back to 2003 when I installed my flatpack kitchen 4 draw cabinet I wanted my horizontal handle to align correctly ;-) (I know I will make a jig) to this day I am not sure what went wrong here have a look, the middle handle is about 1 inch to the left. I was quite annoyed by this and there was no way to fix it, funny thing is I have to tell people about it and THEN point to the handle that is wrong ---- I think there is a motto here about self critique. I installed my cupboard door handles in an odd way (to stop me hanging wet towels from them ) Using two 300mm doors rather than a full size 600mm door that would stick out into the kitchen, I though this was a good idea ? there is less strain on the hinges. The button style door handles from Ikea I just cut the screw head off and drilled a small hole to self tap under the door edge. https://photos.app.goo.gl/XDeJy9MTrY2SCL1A6

John Harrison

Rex- I am really impressed with the simplicity and the resulting elegance of this build. Nicely done.

Michael Nix

The finished cupboard looks great, I could see a double set of these in my garage above the workbench I haven’t built yet 😁

Wayne

Love it, inspired to do more this weekend.

Kevin B Kennedy

Nice build, and your wife is right. Those handles look great! The only bit that really looks out of place to me are the cheap, shiney hinges. I’d have loved to see you use a concealed hinge of some sort. Barrel hinges are probably even easier to install than the ones you have.

A1BASE

Great video. Looking forward to the next. I’m really enjoying this series!

Brian Benson

Great job once again. Though I think I would've have chosen to build the doors out of more, and narrower boards, but that's personal preference I guess. Like Ira, I'm looking forward to see how you're going to make those moldings...

Frans van Ballegooijen

A fine video. You guys nailed it.

Michael Ross

I agree with Ira! A nice stain would look wonderful! My pine monitor stand has a purple stain that looks amazing - and I didn't even do that great of a job with it, it was my first attempt at staining anything. Wonderful light streaks throughout from the differences in grain. My wife thought it was a failure though, so, I guess there's that lol

Jeremy Denslinger

I really wish I had seen this 10 years ago when I built a cabinet for my bedroom. I grossly overbuilt it and it still warped. My wife is happy with the "rustic" look.

Shanni Marmen

I was just looking inside an old sideboard that I use for my pillar drill and general junk storage (need to clean that up) and behold! The doors were built in the same manner you just described. Now that I know it is a legitimate furniture style, and not just something for toolbox lids, I think I can make myself a nice small cabinet.

Martin Hartley

With that beautiful shiny pine surface I am a little sad you are going to end up painting that cupboard. I look forward to seeing how we make molding without special tools.
