Early Access Video: Hand-made cabinet face frames.

Friends:

The kitchen cupboard build continues!  This week, I'm adding a lovely face-frame made from really crappy pine boards. Cabinetry like this may not be the most exciting stuff we do, but it's the bread-and-butter of the craft.

Make a good box that holds the goods and you'll be a hero in your house.

Hope your weekend is off to a great start!

Stephen, that's a good question. There are a lot of reasons to do a face frame. They do give you a place for doors and the option of flush-mount or surface mount. The frame does dress it up and hide any little problems with the structure. It also adds support for the front of the shelves and just tightens up the structure. Yes, it does reduce the opening, but I also chose a fairly wide frame for a country look. You could do a much narrower frame for a more sleek or modern design.

Rex, is there an advantage to using a face frame to mount doors to your project, or is it just to dress up the facade? Also, won’t face frames reduce the size of the openings for the shelves, which would reduce the size of objects that could be put into the shelves? Thanks in advance.

I’m curious if this one’s going to be painted or stained. If stained, wouldn’t a mitered half lap make for a more attractive corner while retaining the ease of assembly? I suppose you’d lose the grip of this setup. Just curious.

Ethan Chitty

Ha! I think I'll use weights as clamps for the door phase. And as to tool storage, i think I'm going to make the same thing and rotate it 90 degrees to make a tool cabinet. The basic design is good the way it is.

Rex Krueger

Yup, it's going in the kitchen to store all the groceries we've bought for the plague!

Rex Krueger

I am currently working on a large cabinet to store my tools, so this series is really helpful. Also, In the absence of appropriate clamps, a 10-kg weightlifting plate can be handy.

Stephen Cannon

It's extra pantry storage for dry goods

A small question, when this project is done, where will its new home be? As a tool cabin in your workshop or a lovely gift to your family or is it plan to be for something else?

I could almost see making a version of that writing desk modified to hold a chromebook or a tablet of some kind.

James Anthony

A simplified version of Jefferson's writing desk would be another good project. We're all writing more letters these days, to keep the post office alive.

Andrew Watt

Thanks, Drew!

Rex Krueger

It certainly sounds like a good project! I'm enjoying the historical stuff these days.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

That's nice to hear. I'm always hoping to teaching something useful!

Rex Krueger

It's weird how many choices you have when building a simple face-frame.

Rex Krueger

I'm starting on them this week!

Rex Krueger

It's both! You can find it in Aldren Watson's book _Furniture Making, Plain and Simple_. Recommended.

Rex Krueger

I'll let Nate know! I'm sure he appreciates it!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Another great one, Rex.

Drew Nelson

You know, if I build cabinets like these, I'll probably just leave the doors and cabinet face off. While going through my kitchen cupboards last night looking for a cake pan (never found one) I realized I have several cabinets with nothing in them that I'd thought were full, and turned up a rice cooker pot I'd thought I lost 2 years ago (out of sight out of... you know the rest)

James Anthony

Loving these videos! I need to whip up something like it for my own place. Any chance you'll do a video on something like the book boxes at Monticello? https://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/book-boxes

James Anthony

Rex... You are AWESOME!!!

Frans van Ballegooijen

As always I enjoyed the video and learned a lot.

Richard Kolk

Thanks for the video. I liked the background and explanation on the joints strengths weaknesses and tips on building it.

Robert Bullock

Another great video. Can’t wait for the doors.

Thrifty Woodworker

I dig that half lap tenon , I've watched more videos than I can count on just joinery and I don't think I've seen that one before, looks easy and strong

Bill Previte

You always know when I get home. The time I get home most nights is usually just before you post a new project or plans. Good motivation going into this weekends project, a bed frame with storage. Good timing. Great video as always. 2 Thumbs up to Nate also.

Nicely explained with some great ideas
