Early Access Video: Make a Saw Vise from Scraps

Friends:

I got a great reaction to my recent saw restoration and everyone seems to like it when I make tools, so let's combine the two!

I've built a great little saw vice that's about as rigid and strong as a vintage, metallic one. Even better, I've given it instant grip and quick release with an inexpensive toggle clamp as the mechanism.  You can build this vise for about $10 and it's a great way to practice some joinery skills.

The plans will be available Wednesday--both here and on the Discourse archive--but I'm not done drawing them yet.

Enjoy!

Great video, Rex! Tried making your router plane these past couple of days and got lazy by using my miter saw. The piece bucked and that was the end of that. And it was some nice maple that I laminated together too...I was so frustrated so I know how you felt when you had to start over in this video lol. Anyway, looking forward to the tenon saw shootout video. Mainly because lately, I've been practicing making through tenons in mortises. They fit great but they look quite sloppy since using my flexible pull saw so I'd be curious to see how you handle this topic. In fact, I think I'd be curious to see more hand saw videos! Maybe a bit of history on hand saws, hand saw types, etc. Thanks, Rex!

Well thought and designed. Thanks Rex.

Sunday morning coffee with Rex and a project I need. :)

Ah, did I catch a glimpse of a Spear & Jackson tenon saw there? I've been using that one for most of my woodworking, and it hasn't disappointed me yet. I'm excited how it compares to other tenon saws :)

Cool tool! I definitely need to practice joining. Two or three days ago I used some half laps on a swing set I made for my kids. It’s looks great from 10’ away, but up close and personal it’s obviously I was rushing.

Thanks for asking! When you look at my thumb, you can't tell anything happened. It also works fine. The nerves are messed up forever and everything I touch with it feels odd, but I don't even notice anymore.

Another great video. BTW, speaking of saws, how is your thumb now that it's been a while since the Saw Stop incident.?. I'm saving up for a Saw Stop since I watched that video. Thanks. Mark in Colorado.

Thank you! It's my little contribution to the million designs already out there.

I hope you write the whole thing up on Discourse. Frame saws are a whole world that I just need to get into!

Rex Krueger

I'm excited to see you make it!

You can get those Disstons going FAST. Stanley gets all the press in vintage tools, but Disston was an amazing company that made indestructible, heirloom tools.

Rex Krueger

Please do! I think saw sharpening is an opperation that's better standing up, but that's just me.

Rex Krueger

Love it. Toggle clamp is a great addition.

Nice video. I get your reasoning for the design. I think is is fine for all the reasons you noted. Good on you. I've just got to do it in a way that uses the vise I clamp it in to provide the clamping force for the blade as well. Thanks for getting me thinking about this. I have been accepting the bench top height and a stool to avoid hunching over to sharpen saws. It will be a lot better to get it up to a comfortable standing height. I think I have a way to do this in a super simple way that works with my bench vice. I'll share in this space when I get it worked out.

Amazing tool. Just received a saw blade from highland woodworking that I am using to build a Paul Sellers frame saw with and it needs some fine tuning to be a good joinery saw. This saw vise will make it easier to sharpen then using the current method I use now. Thanks

James Crandall

Very excited!

Come post your resto on the discourse page. It's really cool seeing what everybody is picking up!

Nic Beurskens

Amazing timing, I just got 4 rusty old Disstons which are all totally blunt!
