Sneak Peak: The 2x4 Stool

Friends:

The video will be up on Saturday, but I just can't wait to show off my modern stool made entirely from ONE 2x4. The wood cost me $4. Throw in a little glue and finish and you can make the whole thing for about $5.

The best part: this isn't just a stunt from the World's Cheapest Woodworker; it's a real piece of furniture. This thing is sturdy and comfortable and light as a feather. It would be at home in your shop or your kitchen.

You'll get all the details this weekend, but I hope you enjoy couple of quick pictures.

Here's hoping that everyone is safe and healthy!!

Or, an easle! I've got a lazy painter in my life I'd like to see more work out of.

Nic Beurskens

Well, I do sell the plans...just not to Patrons.

Rex Krueger

I don't know if you can stand on it, but the stool holds me without trouble and i weigh over 220. For something that leads a really rough life, I recommend hard wood.

Rex Krueger

Ha!

Rex Krueger

That has never occurred to me. Good idea!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Well, then I think you'll do fine!

Rex Krueger

Look for them coming this week

Nic Beurskens

I have wanted to build a stool and this is the perfect project. Where do I find the plans?

Philip Hendrickson

I've been a boot strap woodworker and Carver for 40 years I appreciate your any one can do it I'm not trying to sell anything approach. Keep up the good work

Isaac Robinson

Yep, good advice. I'm going to try it anyway because I'm a rebel ;) (plus, I did build a dining table with hand cut mortise & tenon and it actually turned out really well - maple and walnut...I surprised myself since it was my 1st real project)

Melissa

The side bench would be maybe 18" deep? about 40" tall, so that detail parts would be right up in your face. There would be room for an air compressor and a compressor hose bucket on one side. 6 shallow drawers for: cotter pins and pliers, spring clips and pliers, circles(clip rings, spring clips) and pliers, sheer pins and nuts and two wrenches, air compressor accessories, grease nipples and tool, a few wrenches. There would be a spot to hand two grease guns, and store a few grease cartridges. An oil drain pan and a few bottles of oil, a hydraulic oil bottle, a funnel, a small garden shovel (for cleaning tracks, idlers, etc). The top needs to be sturdy, 2x material, and about 4' long but it doesn't need to be much longer than that if at all. One needs to have the under top storage because you have to have the top clear all the time, for example to replace the rings in a hydraulic cylinder.

William Allen

That's Detroit no matter what road your on

The Poor Man

Can you stand on the spindle without breaking it? I'm thinking about bar stools that needs to be a bit high and be able to endure some weight (feet) on the lower beams (spindles?)

Jerry Bimger

Very nice. Would cost cost double that in UK as only cheap wood is CLS whitewood 2x3 ish at about $3.5 and that is really really soft! No need to mould seat to fit with whitewood just sit on it it will dent to shape!

WoodworkLearner

2x4 music stand too perhaps?

Paul Morin

Darn good for a 2x4

Paul Morin

Yeah. I have a couple of ideas to simplify it, especially not having curves!! ;-)

Brian Benson

Side table...interesting. I'll look into it.

Rex Krueger

You could totally batch these out! Lots of the same components.

Rex Krueger

They're going to collect my life!

Rex Krueger

Welcome indeed! This is a great project as long as you've done a few others first. I wouldn't start here.

Rex Krueger

I had to look that one up...wow, that's a fancy piece.

Rex Krueger

Totally my pleasure!

Rex Krueger

Florida drivers are FAST on the freeway. I've been passed like I was standing still when I was doing 80! Crazy.

Rex Krueger

Tell me more about the barn stool for changing bulbs and the side bench for machine maintenance. Those sound like good ones.

Rex Krueger

i know i just found it funny the first thing she thought is im a fatass LOL.

Infidel305

Thank you very much!

Melissa

Looks great. I love seeing and building affordable and nice looking projects. I would love to see a nice small side table to go with this. Awesome job

James Crandall

Oh oh, kitchen chairs that look nice and stack.

William Allen

A shoe bench. An outdoor shoe cleaning station. A barn stool that you can use to change light bulbs. A side bench for doing maintenance on machines. A small side board for the dinning room to use as a buffet server. Maybe it can also be used in the kitchen as an extra surface. Stacking stools like you have here, but so you can stack three or four in a corner. Those folding small wooden tables people have for company or for doing a big craft (lego build?). A coffee table designed to be easily moved? A cabinet to hold games, like chess set, mahjong, go, like that. 🤔

William Allen

Glad you stopped lurking! Welcome to the club!

Nic Beurskens

Get after it! Post it up when you're done!

Nic Beurskens

BTW - I think I'll try doing several of these stools for Christmas gifts! Now for something that I can make for some of the shut-ins at our church.

Howard Tuckey

That looks great! And it's now officially on my list. And Cleveland and Detroit drivers somehow got the idea that they're gonna collect their own life insurance!

Howard Tuckey

I signed up with your Patreon about a month ago and have been lurking since then. That stool called me out of the shadows because I had to say I think it is quite beautiful. I would never have guessed it was a 2x4. I'm going to give this a try asap. Thanks, Rex!

Melissa

Yes Detroit is horrible. I lived in Florida for a bit and went through Lauderdale a few times very mild compared to Detroit

The Poor Man

I only was in Florida once, but man... I am well versed with Amsterdam (Nl) and Paris (Fr) traffic, thought Milan (It) was stiff. Wage Detroit is worse than Lauderdale?

Bas Cost Budde

Yeah I'd say they got their licenses from a box of cracker jacks but I think it's closer to a bowl of fruit loops.

The Poor Man

That looks fantastic!! I’m an absolute beginner woodworker (not just handtools, all of it), but I think I might try this one. The stool is definitely another home run, Rex! Thanks for all you do. My wife wants me to build up to making her demilune table for our foyer. I think that’s a long way off, but the stool can be a start.

Brian Benson

Well you came up with another great project. Thanks for your creativity and bringing practical projects to the group!!

Alan Smith

Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Cleveland drivers are absolute lunatics! I've lived in 4 states and I've never seen people drive like this.

Rex Krueger

Thanks! I based it off the famous Tage Fride design!

Rex Krueger

Really? What other kinds of things do you want?

Rex Krueger

No problem: I'm tall and I sized it for me. Make the legs a little shorter and put the extra wood into the seat.

Rex Krueger

Looks sweet!

Bill Previte

I might give you a run for the title of world's cheapest woodworker. Just wait till I start my workbench build. Currently I'm stuck in my hotel in Cleveland bored because the event I came to attend was canceled, man people here drive worse than in Detroit.

The Poor Man

I have a couple cedar 2*4s that are in the 3' range I might have to knock one of these out with. Fence off-cuts. I have been trying to work out a solid design for a swing out seat at my bench, but this might be a better option. Love the clean design!

Nic Beurskens

Aaaaarg! I can’t wait! These are the kind of things I want to make for my home, farm, and shop.

William Allen

my wife said not big enough for my butt LOL
