Free Plans: The Big Leg Vise

Friends:

The leg vise is done and man, does it grip!  This is one of the strongest vises I've ever used and that's all the more impressive because I made it from pine!  You can make this vise, too. The total cost is about $70, or maybe less depending on how your source your wood. And of course, the plans are free as a perk of being a Patron.

Hope you enjoy them!

Also, the Leg Vise video is currently set to premiere mode, which means it is not watchable until 2:30 PM today. If you're not at work, swing by YouTube and join in the live chat. Heck, even if you are at work; that's what headphones are for!

Resurrecting an old thread, but: how thick are stair treads over there in the USA? Here in the UK, I have too many choices to be clear what you used, and strength obviously matters here. Thanks!

John Pettigrew

I'm sorry, I don't understand the question. Maybe message me?

So I’m one of those people that had a nice heavy piece of hardwood to use for this but it’s not as thick as the 3 stair treads.....any recommendations for the wedge cut out using something that’s a 6/4 board? I’ve built it and installed and holds like a champ but I haven’t done the wedge yet

Can't help it, gotta post something a little off-topic. I printed the leg-vise plans, and they've been laying here next to my laptop, face-down so that the "Installed" page is facing up. Maybe it's me, or maybe it's the orientation of the picture on the page, or just the angle of that vise, but has anyone else caught a quick glance at it, and seen an AT-AT there? Or are there no other Star Wars fans in the group? :-) BTW - I've priced the stair treads at our local ACE lumber yard, and they're only $37 and change for the three, including tax, so it's entirely doable here! Right after I finish the bench, a tool tote to store under it, the original holding devices, and one of Paul Sellers's Bow Saws. See what you got me started in‽ I'll have to live another ten years at least, now! :-)

When i do premieres, there's a chat window and I get to interact with my fantastic viewers. I might also start doing live streams.

My pleasure.

And feel FREE to post other's work. I love to see other creator's content!

I totally agree: too much money for too little use. I've put a LOT of thought into making wooden threads, but it seems like too much time and money for the return. By the time you're making good ones, you could have just bought a couple. That's why I chose the metal screw.

Rex Krueger

With permission I’ll add a youtuber that’s done this, I don’t care to promote others on Rexs channel without permission....however I’d really like to see how Rex figures that out Daniel. His solutions to things has been a real joy to watch....and why I’m now a patron

Paul Pearson

Rex, have you ever messed with making wooden threads? I appreciate the way that you try to find a way to make things even on a limited budget. I've tried to find a way to make them without having purchase one of those tap and die kits, but those tend to run $60 or more for a tool that only does one thing, and will likely only get used a couple of times.

Thanks, Rex.
