Sneak-Peek: The Joiner's Leg Vise

Friends:

The early part of the week is always a flurry of shooting, editing, and scripting, but I found a second to snap a quick pic of the leg vise that's going to cap off our Joiner's Bench.

This thing might cost you as little as $43 to build and it's solid as a rock. Best of all, there's no lower-guide and NO PIN to adjust. I really can't imagine a better vise for the money.

But as always, I'll let you be the judge. I count on my Patrons to give it to me straight.

New video Saturday!

Sneak-Peek: The Joiner's Leg Vise

Comments

You can try and succeed. I know you can. It's just a matter of time.

Rex Krueger

Beautiful in form and function! You’re really good at making me feel able to tackle stuff like this... even if there is a little dunning-Krueger effect that gives me some initial overconfidence... I feel like I can try

Garrett C.

Got a link FROM THE FUTURE to the video here on Patreon, but am getting a 404. It's signed "Happy Saturday -Rex". Apparently that bench interacts with the quantum realm, can't wait to make it!

Mike J

It did come out well. It will be up tomorrow!

Rex Krueger

After your last video I actually thought to myself, "Ooh, I hope it's gonna be an angled leg vise." And here it is! I am super psyched for the build video.

Jac

It works great! I just slide that wedge back and forth with my boot. Easy.

Rex Krueger

leg vises were seen on ancient Nicholson benches: probably it offers more gripping surface, is pretty and affordable. I think its simpler to install than a face vise. How does it work without a guide and a pin?

carlo pieracci

That's one aspect of Patreon that I don't have control over. I'm sorry!

Rex Krueger

I'm glad!

Rex Krueger

Please make payments due on the first of the month.

Chris Donovan

Looking forward to seeing the video Saturday!

As you said, it's hard to make a workbench without a workbench. I'm having trouble holding the 2x4s steady while cutting the half-lap joints. I'm thinking of screwing them to the tree in my front yard while I cut them. Update: 1 trestle is done. I wound up clamping the 2x4s to the handrail of the steps going up into the house from my garage. The step and riser made a nice backstop. Then I used my sawsall to make the longitudinal rip cut. This was probably better than my other idea, which was to strap the 2x4s to my car ramps and park the car on the end of the boards to hold them down :-) Hoping to finish the book case I want to build before the heat-death of the universe.

Kevin Lundquist

Ah! Clever. I just used a simple wedge on the floor. Less fancy.

Rex Krueger

Thanks! This is actually the first one I've even touched.

Rex Krueger

That's a great point, although I've always been more or less happy with my vise in one spot. I've never really thought about moving it.

Rex Krueger

Just wrapped shooting about 10 minutes ago. It will be ready Saturday. (Most likely).

Rex Krueger

No problem. Just flip everything 180 degrees and you're all set!

Rex Krueger

Well, since this is my full-time job, I move pretty fast. You don't need to keep up. You gotta move at your speed.

Rex Krueger

I built essentially the same vice a while back, and I ended up adding a 3/4 in pipe guide to keep the bottom from swinging back and forth so much. I used the house jack threads, so yours may work more smoothly with less swinging. Got the idea here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI0sZodYJrI&t=10s I did not use the pipe clamp spacer - just the pipe guide with the angle floor board.

Rick Prosser

Almost identical to the leg vise I experimented with. Of all the bench vises, the leg vise is the most versatile and the strongest. Your design is clearly ROCK solid and mega easy to use.

William Allen

You can, easily, just mount the bench side thread on all four corners, "moveable vise".

William Allen

It would be cool to be able to move the vise around the bench.

tom Masters

Nice vise. Can't wait to see the build video...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Yooohhhooooo!!! Nice... As a lefty though I will install it on the other end of the bench!!!

Alexander Charonitakis

Very cool! I wish I could keep up with you; I'm not even done with the trestles yet.

Kevin Lundquist

Interesting, I couldn't tell if it was made from laminated 2x4s or something else, but I can't imagine that white pine would be stiff enough though. Yeah I noticed that angle, I'm curious what that's going to look like. And sure it would be nice to have a jointer, planer, table saw, router table, and drill press, but I'm sure you've got plenty of tricks to make it work with hand tools. Looking forward to the video!

Jake Cotumaccio

Jay's build is absolutely an inspiration and he'll get a shout-out in the video. Mine is different in a few ways: 1. Angled 2.) Built entirely with hand tools and 3) I found a cheap and ultra-stiff source for wood. Jay says his vise flexes a bit. Mine doesn't. Also, $400 for a vise is insanity. I build the entire bench and outfitted it with holdfasts and a vise for UNDER $250.

Rex Krueger

...right-brained woodworker

Paul Thoma

Yes! You'll need to flip everything for proper use as a southpaw.

Rex Krueger

Not sure if you've seen his post, but this is basically the same setup that Jay Bates uses for his leg vise. Between the Yost vise and the wedge at the bottom, I think it's the most effective, cost-efficient design. I was considering this design before but you definitely made my decision a lot easier (as opposed to saving up for the $400 Benchcrafted hardware by skipping groceries for a month). Edit: Here's a pic of his https://jayscustomcreations.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/hickory-leg-vise-42.jpg

Jake Cotumaccio

as a lefty i say without a doubt yes unless you like awkward angles or working from off the end of the bench.

Infidel305

I am not Rex but I think you should. :) I am left-handed and I can imagine that I fix a piece of timber into this leg vise, I turn my right-hand side to the table and use a plane in my right hand to work on the timber. If the vise was on the other side, it would be very inconvenient for me so I think you feel the same when it is on the "wrong" side for you.

Csongor Halmai

Rex, as a lefty, should I reverse this to the opposite (right hand) corner of the bench?
