Sneak Peek: The Joiner's Bench

Friends:

It's just a few pieces of construction lumber and a few fasteners, but it's coming together into a pretty surprising bench. Just two half-days in the shop (with filming) and I got all this done. I'm excited.

Free plans on Wednesday and a new video Saturday.

Hope everyone is well. 6 inches of snow in Cleveland today.

See you soon!

Sneak Peek: The Joiner's Bench

Comments

That's great! Time travel! This reminds me of the old song "To Morrow" by the Kingston Trio.

Todd Fox

I'll have them ready by Wednesday!

Rex Krueger

This is an awesome looking bench, and at the perfect time! I'm just about done unpacking after buying a house in Dec, and I just go my first batch of hand tools last weekend. I can't wait to get my hands on the plans and start building soon.

Patrick Joyce

Thanks! I used to be 6-2. Age has robbed me of almost an inch. Even so, the advice is good for everyone and directly applicable to me. Thanks again.

Mark L

It's the height of my table-saw, which I always found to be perfect. I dropped this on a half inch to 34 1/2". I think that will make it a bit better for hand-work. I expect this to be an all hand tool bench. Keep in mind that I'm 6-2, so some people will want a shorter bench. My advice: build high. Sawing the legs down later is easy.

Rex Krueger

Very nice and solid frame. I've read about and watched videos dealing with the issue of bench top height. How did you decide the height that's right for you?

Mark L

It has been Wednesday here all day hahahaha Australia is 13 hours or so in front. If I leave at the right time and fly to America I can leave today and arrive just at the end of yesterday!!!! Looking forward to tomorrow. Wed for you Thur for me crazy world huh.

martin turner

I can't wait to see the video and plans!

Scott Benjamin

BEEFY! Love it.

Jim "Mr. Measure Twice" Marchetti

I'm in Southern California (Lancaster, northern LA county) and wearing jackets over the top of my long sleeves - it is still getting below freezing here in the high desert at night.

Kenny Raby

Looks very promising and I'm looking forward to the video of this build. I won't be building this one. I wouldn't know where to put it. But it's a great project...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Wow, looks absolutely fantastic. That will be one solid bench. Anxiously awaiting the video! 1.5 feet (18") of snow here on Thursday. Should be gone by tomorrow.

William Allen

I do not have to love it!

Rex Krueger

You're both right. The braces keep the legs square to the top and keep them from kicking in under pressure. Usually, this would be handed by a mortised stretcher between the legs, but this approach is faster. The braces are on two sides to keep them away from each other and they are let in to the legs.

Rex Krueger

24x60, but making it shorter or longer won't really change anything.

Rex Krueger

Perfect! And if you have the materials on hand, then they should be dry enough to start right away. I had to buy all mine and wait two weeks. I have no patience whatsoever. It was torture.

Rex Krueger

Nope, that's just another part of my shop that I generally keep off camera. The washer and dryer don't make fun viewing, although you'll see them in the next video.

Rex Krueger

Snow? Oh yeah, that white stuff we see once or twice every decade. I'm just glad we're back to normal. Not supposed to have to run the AC in Charleston, SC this time of year. I was just watching a squirrel try to figure out how to get a drink with that thin film of ice on the bird bath. Second time this year it's skimmed over. :)

Bill Smithem

thanks. the only reason i see for those braces is tocontrol twisting..but how much twiating takes place on thick legs?

carlo pieracci

Diagonals introduce triangles into the construction, a stiff form that keeps it shape. Rex may have a more elaborate argument for the front/back issue, but my guess would be simplicity/speed: no need to let one brace into the other.

Bas Cost Budde

For those of you from the rest of the country, 6 inches of snow in Cleveland is a pleasant summer day. Gotta love the snow belt!

Jim Williams

Appliances? No, they are handy tool shelves. Have you not seen his tool tote video?

Benjamin Yardley

beginner question: why those diagonal braces? why one brace in front of the legs while the other is behind the legs?

carlo pieracci

Looking great Rex. But I think your missing the top. 😳🤣. Looking forward to seeing the whole build. Congrats. Great project to share.

Alan Smith

Is that about 24"x48" ?? That's about the size I'm leaning toward for my shop.

Howard Tuckey

Dang! Every time I decide to do something, you manage to make me wait for something that looks waaaaay better! :-) Lessee- I've got some fresh 2x12, a 12" untreated 4x4, a solid core door that I was planning to laminate with some doubled 3/4 plywood, etc etc, and your pic looks like it was tailor made for materials on hand! I can wait! Meanwhile I've been making simple things, like bootjacks for some of the older or more arthritic folks at church. And building a vacuum dust collection system, and just puttering. And just plain enjoying your Patreon channel! Thanks again!

Howard Tuckey

Can't help but notice the appliances. Are you building this on location for a client? Here in California it's too warm for long sleeves.

Rick Maxon

Looks great. Can't wait for the video.

Woodshed Woodworking

That joiner's bench is shaping up really well. I'm looking forward to the video. The snow we had this weekend in Aurora, Illinois was rained on and now everything's icy.

Gaby Johnston

Looking forward to your take on this bench once it's been put through it's paces!

Nic Beurskens

It's looking nice so far. Are those 2x12 boards? I'm sure they'll make nice aprons.

Yohann_M

looks good. did you do a half-lap joint on the bottom of the diagonal braces?

Michael Riese

The new bench looks great, can’t wait to see the video. Wish we only had 6 inches of snow here in SD.

Jared Leff

Maybe do a bike workbench of the roman bench. Just a front tire Clamp and a ramp . ;)

Wet and windy in Argyll, Scotland.
