My Favorite Woodwork Books

Friends:

I know many of you want to pick up some of the books from this week's video, so I have my list ready and I'm releasing it to Patrons only until Wednesday afternoon.

Many of the books on this list are out of print, or there are a limited number of cheap, used copies on Amazon. Some of these books will sell out after my video goes live, so I'm getting this list out now so my Patrons don't miss out.

If you want to pick up any of these books (especially the used or rare ones) grab them NOW, before other people snap them up.

Hope everyone is having a restful end to the year!

"Country Furniture" arrived, and flipping through it, I think it contains knowledge it took years to glean from internet woodworking sites. Great recommendation! I can't wait to actually get time to sit down and read it. (If only I could by the reading time when I buy a book).

I would be VERY interested to know what tools you find in Hungary.

Rex Krueger

I might have to pick that up!

Rex Krueger

I will speak to my editor about it. Thank for the feedback!

Rex Krueger

Rex, the jerky, hard cut edits in the straight face shots are uhn err disruptive

I only recently started looking into woodworking, I only have two books for now. I did order: 'By Shaker Hands', as I did find a relative good offer. Since most others I am interested in, are in print, I will spread those over the year. The two I have: Vic Tesolin, The Minimalist Woodworker, and Paul Sellers, essential woodworking hand tools. Living in Hungary, being Dutch, I have a hard time finding out where to source used tools. Need to find out when flea markets are held, and which ones are worth visiting. :-)

I do have the Estonia book. Have you read Roubo? His book (recently translated by Lost Art ) is a real gem of French tradition.

Rex Krueger

Yeah, I blow through an embarassing amount of money on books each winter.

Rex Krueger

It's about SO much more, and I don't even like Krenov planes very much!

Rex Krueger

I see you have David Finck's book right at the top. I agree that one is special. I got a copy after Ron Hock rec'd it in his newsletter. It is far more than just about making planes.

Michael Ross

ordered the “stool from a tree”, Woodturning, Workbenches, finishes and now I’m tapped out for January lol.

So now the question from my side.. Today I went into town (Budapest in Hungary) and searched some second hand bookstores, I was expecting to find some books around woodworking. At an Antiquity store I was shown three beautiful, museum quality books, with almost A1 size sheets, with all kinds of furniture drawings. I was afraid to touch them to much and the price of the only one I dared to check was 60000 forints, (180 EUR/200 USD). They are great, but not what I was hoping for, anybody know about any European books, English, Dutch, German, even others. Books showing how woodworking was done in Europe before we had machines? I suppose like: https://lostartpress.com/products/woodworking-in-estonia

Eric van Horssen

I'll need to give that a shot!

Rex Krueger

Seems like an obvious choice!

Rex Krueger

A very key point! I need to remember that many of my Patrons are all over the world.

Rex Krueger

Now that is all VERY helpful! Thanks!

Another good choice to search: Abebooks (.com, .de, .co.uk, etc) Or use bookfinder.com: https://www.bookfinder.com/search/?author=aldren+watson&title=country+furniture&lang=en&new_used=*&destination=nl¤cy=EUR&binding=*&isbn=&keywords=&minprice=&maxprice=&publisher=&min_year=&max_year=&mode=advanced&st=sr&ac=qr

Some which I found available in multiple languages: Japanese Woodworking Tools: Their Tradition, Spirit and Use https://www.amazon.de/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3AToshio+Odate The German version is a Hardcover for the same price as the English Paperback.

Eric van Horssen

Regarding the Amazon links, changing '.com' to '.co.uk' or '.de' or which ever site you would normally order from, might get you different results, either from less sellers, or sometimes additional ones. For some in print books it will suddenly give me a direct sale from within Europe, preventing troubles with import/shipping. Yes it might be a higher price, but the import duties and extra shipping might get to the same overall price.

Eric van Horssen

For people not living in the USA, sometimes the Shipping and Posting can be killing, also Import Duties might come in to play. Books from Lost Art Press, check out their International options: https://lostartpress.com/pages/international-customers This will be true for all four bit.ly links above. BLOG post by Christopher Schwarz (Lost Art Press) regarding the follow up to: "Make a Chair from a Tree" https://blog.lostartpress.com/2018/09/13/news-make-a-chair-from-a-tree-third-edition-and-video/

Eric van Horssen

That's just great Rex. Have to go to work now but will check it out first thing tomorrow. Oh, and before I forget: Best wishes to you and your family...
