Early Access Video: The Instant Shave Horse

Woodwork for Humans returns!!!

I'm going to make some chairs out of raw, green logs. It's going to be amazing. But for this work, you need some special tools, like a shave-horse. And man, that's a whole project by itself.

No time to build one? No problem.

I've researched and experimented and come up with this fantastic jig that works like a shave horse but can be built in about an hour for just about zero money. (If you own a pipe-clamp).

This is a fun and ultra-fast way to get going in green woodworking. Try it out. You'll be amazed.

Happy Saturday!

This has come at the perfect time for me! Thanks. I’m def still a human who plays with wood and not a woodworker.

Tonia Moxley

Soooo, long story, but I had to take this video down. I'll be doing a real shave horse soon, so look forward to that!

Rex Krueger

Hey Rex I’m scrolling through all the old feed I’ve never had a chance to look at, and realized I couldn’t play the video, but that’s okay! I don’t need a video... but are there plans for the build?

Joshua Gentges

I had a...disagreement with someone about this video. Nothing interesting, I promise, but it seemed better to just take the video down.

Rex Krueger

where is this video?

Liam Burke

Please message me with all the details!!

Rex Krueger

Rex, you've got me obsessed with shavehorses. I ran across a great book on DIY shavehorses of a rather amazing variety. OK to mention details? NP if not, thought it best to ask first.

T. Flo

Let's get a pic of that up on the community page!

Rex Krueger

That is crazy! I'm gonna find you something better!

Rex Krueger

Insane. So much like my granddad, the master tool and die maker. These old guys were no joke!

Rex Krueger

Not the safest option, but I've been using a kitchen knife and some vise grips.

Tsani Rósenov Sábev

Born in 1888. Died in 1986. Apprenticed as a carpenter at age 13. During the depression he smuggled liquor across the Canadian border, worked as a barber, and did some prize fighting. Mostly though, he worked as a carpenter. After he hit 90, he limited himself to small handyman jobs, but only fully retired at age 95 after the family ganged up on him and forced him to surrender his car keys.

Mark L

I think you'll find this jig gets the job done. Please post pics when you're done!

Rex Krueger

Wow, THAT is an amazing story. I thought I was good at turning junk into useful stuff, but your granddad has me beat!

Rex Krueger

Actually should have said nails in place of the second lumber reference. So much for proof reading skills.

Mark L

This is improvisational genius! I've not yet used a drawknife, bu I have done a bit of spokeshave work. I found it to be a utterly addictive activity. My earliest memory of my great grandfather was watching him straighten and repoint nails salvaged from a demolished shed. He used the salvaged lumber, metal roofing, and lumber to build a new chicken shed. Granddad would approve of Woodworking for Humans.

Rex, this is really a useful video for me and a lot of others. I have been sitting on a project (well, not really) for making a short milking stool for my daughter from a round of maple that I had to take down at my job. I have the round all smooth and I have three pieces of oak for the legs, but I have been debating in my mind about how to approach the shaping of the legs. It seemed incongruous to make them all pretty and finely shaped and finished for what is essentially a rustic project. Your shave clamp here gives me an excuse to hone the drawknives I picked up a while ago and should result in just the right style of leg for the stool. Thanks.

Yohann_M

For all I know it could be complete junk but figured it's cheap enough to at least look into, as long as the steel is at least a decent quality though it should work just fine I'd imagine. Not really much to a draw knife to go wrong. If I didnt score an unused older robert sorby drawknife for 15 bucks I would probably order one to try

Ryan Roberts

That's a hot tip. I'll take a look!

Rex Krueger

I was just doing one of my completely random internet tool searches and noticed that rockler happens to have some drawknives in the 25-30$ range, cant speak to the quality or how well they actually work though but if you are looking for cheap it's worth a shot I guess

Ryan Roberts

Sketched your video. The image will not go public before this video appears on youtube – promised ;-) https://www.dropbox.com/s/xi3cr1xk5z19fja/Instant_Shavehorse.jpg?dl=0

Wolfgang Kinkeldei

Hopefully a few people will see my post, and be able to save some money while continuing on to their craft, I love saving money on tools.

Jared Leff

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I bet that's worked great! I have many international viewers, so I'm always trying to find things people can just buy on the internet.

Rex Krueger

Just a hint, Ive bought all of my draw knives in second hand or pawn shops, never paid more than $5 for them.

Jared Leff

Wonderful as usual!

Duncan

Ya, have to agree :D. I've learned more from your channel than any other. Can't thank you enough for all your awesome ideas and your approach. Oh, btw, my spoke shave is made from a banged up lawn mower blade. I can't do much in the way of metal work, but my older brother is a master welder, he can do anything with a welding torch and plasma cutter.

William Allen

It won't take long!

Rex Krueger

Awesome! Can you get up some pics of yours? I think you made one because it's just the logical thing to do if you're on this path.

Rex Krueger

That's a fascinating idea! I'll bring it up with the boys!

Rex Krueger

I rush to get the video up in time for early access. You can't find the plans or tip sheet because I haven't made them yet. They will be ready on Wednesday and I'll post the plans to Patreon for free then.

Rex Krueger

I think I'll do the one from Ingenious Mechanics later in the month, so you can compare them!

Rex Krueger

Great idea I am building one for sure

Aaron Sprague

Hilarious, I just built one last week. So it's kinda a hybrid saw horse old fashioned American Shave horse. I used wood I got from the free pile at a house build. I'll post a picture. I love this super simple pipe clamp version a lot! I will absolutely be building one this afternoon.

William Allen

Looking forward to the affordable draw knife solution. Till then, its scrub plane and spoke shave for my shaping. :-) Maybe your blacksmith club can get a product together that you could offer in your shop? Like a kit that the buyer can make their own handles for.

Todd Fox

But I never cn find the plans or tip sheets you mention in these advance posts. What am I doing wrong?

Howard Tuckey

Just another reason I joined in supporting you via Patreon! I had thought to add a shaving horse feature to the $30 workbench when I build it (soon) and was trying to design an add-on to that, but had decided to go with the one I found in "Ingenious Mechanicks" . I think this one would be cheaper and easier to add! Thanks!

Howard Tuckey

You might surprise yourself. It was really easy to use.

Rex Krueger

I would shave pieces of my fingers off if I used a plane like that. I can’t even grate cheese without including my knuckles.
