Early Access Video: Build it or buy it? The Low Angle Plane

Friends:

Well, I did it. I went and bought a Stanley Low Angle Jack and did a head-to-head comparison with my home-made version. It's really fascinating to have a factory plane to compare with mine.

Of course, my aluminium plane can't really compete, but then there's the whole question of whether or not these low-angle planes are even any good.

Should you buy one? Do you need one?

Let's find out!

Early Access Video: Build it or buy it? The Low Angle Plane

Comments

Hm, I think that just applies on the day of the Premier. So, there's a four hour window where it's not available here. But that's after it's already been up here for 4 days. If this ends up being a big deal, I'll find a work-around. Thanks for letting me know!

Rex Krueger

Hi Rex, did you know that if you set a video as a Premiere on youtube it also affects the early release here? So right now Patrons can't watch this video until it 'premiers' on YouTube.

A1BASE

In the low-angle planes, yes. In my planes, they were cheap. The most expensive plane on that table was the No. 4 1/2 and I gave $15 for that one!

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you think so. I'm going to be VERY thorough.

Rex Krueger

Thanks, Rex, for doing this one. It's just what I needed to know about low angle jacks, and the Stanley in particular. Toward the end, I was already anticipating a purchase. And then you brought out the Veritas. I can be patient. Your reviews are the best!

Anderson Young

I have that jointer. It’s wonderful.

A1BASE

There's a lot of money sitting on that table right there!

Jared Leff

I'll try!

Rex Krueger

I enjoy a good surprise, too. I have to admit, the Stanley was the nicest surprise in a while.

Rex Krueger

How cool was this? I always love it when the world suprises me.

James Boatright

I'm really excited about the next video! keep up the good wor!

LiraNuna

I NEVER thought I'd say this, but you might want to consider it. The Stanley is an outstanding value.

Rex Krueger

Thank you! I'm trying for informative!

Rex Krueger

The long-winded have a home here! I totally agree with you on your planes. I've wondered about the low-angle jointer. I'm glad it's working out for you.

Rex Krueger

The Tay tools low angle jack. Arrived after I finished the shoot. Much more on that to follow.

Rex Krueger

What plane did you buy that hasn't arrived yet?

Matthew Leigh

There are two simple things that bevel up planes do. Allow you change the blade angle by simply changing the blade, and you can change the angle from very low (32) to whatever you want right up to 90. You can easily have a scrub blade, toothing blade, etc. And secondly, it eats end grain for breakfast. I have two planes that are great finds, a scrub plane, and a Record No.4 which I've setup as a smoothing plane. Both are fantastic for the task they are setup for and I'm extremely happy to have them. I sprung for a Veritas Jointer and got the bevel up with a 43 degree setup (12 degree bed plus 30 degree blade). I got the bevel up because when I bought it, it was a bit less than the traditional jointer, same dimension and weight. it works fantastic as a long jointer for putting the final 6 square jointing on anything. I use it everyday, and all it takes is a few passes to finish the final edge or face of the board. I don't use any power tools. I think that by and large old planes are going to be your best value if you can find them in good enough condition. Making your own plane is also going to be great value if you can get a blade and cap. I made a rabbet plane from a 3/4 chisel out of wood. It works pretty darned well. As well as a 3/4 modern shoulder plane. But it is no where as easy to use a modern plane. So, until I can afford to buy a modern plane, or until I find an old one, I'm very happy to use my wooden one. Because, it works pretty much as well. I'm so glad you are doing these videos. Because now I feel much more comfortable sticking with the 4 planes I have. One always wonders if you are actually doing as good a job as possible. Now I know I am. Thanks kindly. (Jesus, I'm long winded, gotta work on that)

Hey Rex, that was a nice evaluation of the Stanley BULAJ. I got to hold one of these last weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of manufacture. It isn't perfect, but it's still pretty good for a little more than $100. I've watched several comparison videos, but yours has been the most informative so far.

Yohann_M

As usual, I think you're the best. I can't wait to see the next video with the comparisons, and I'm not even considering buying one - at this point.
