Early Access Video: Pro Tips for Flea Market tool hunting.

Friends:

I'm back from three solid days of tool hunting at the Hershey PA Antique Car Show and Flea Market. And you know I didn't come back empty-handed. Aside from a horde of tools and supplies, I also shot a pile of footage and I've prepared my ultimate guide to finding and buying tools at the flea-market.

I know this video is a bit later than usual, so thanks for being patient. I'll have a new video for you on Saturday and some exclusive content later in the week.

Maybe I should say I'll "probably" have some exclusive content later in the week. My daughter was up vomiting at 4:00 AM, so this week is looking a little chaotic. Still, the work goes on!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Case in point, That Map

Yup, it's honestly appreciated! You guys are like my editorial staff. You catch important things so they don't go out to the Interweb where people would truly eat me alive.

Rex Krueger

I wasnt having a go at Rex, I was having a go at you, however, having read your reply, I get it. Cheers

Gary Meechan

In all seriousness, this is Patreon. I think it's fair that if Rex releases a video early with a spelling mistake in the title we point it our and give him a bit of gentle teasing about it. Because if we didn't it'd get released to YouTube like that, and those cunts would eat him alive for it.

A1BASE

To bitch at Rex?

A1BASE

Ha! Point taken.

Rex Krueger

Very informative, as to the spelling police, get a grip, we are all here for one reason.

Also, for anyone on facebook, here's a good group for grinder building. It's usually a really refreshingly positive group too. :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/847488865357217/

Yeah man, I use a 2x72 at my smithing club and god, it just blows away my little 6-inch craftsman sander. I need to step up.

Rex Krueger

In a few years, I hope to rent a building and move the whole shop in there. Then I'll have a room with all the machines (dirt room), a room for just hand-tools (clean room), and a room for forging and maybe glass-blowing (hot-shop). It's a nice dream.

Rex Krueger

You know, now that spell-check is built into almost everything, I do okay. But it's not in my graphics program, so I spelled "Gem" as "Jem"...and felt dumb. The struggle continues...

Rex Krueger

So is my older brother so I get it. He is 58 and has struggled with spelling his whole life. He hates to send e-mails at work.

WhatMeWorry

LOL

Jim Williams

Man, I'm really glad to hear that. I want these videos to deliver the key information to the people who need it.

Rex Krueger

This was the episode I have been waiting for!! I never would have thought to analyze the location of tools in the booth to gauge how much I could haggle!

Nic Beurskens

Check out Steve Ramsay’s video on a cheap cyclone filter attached to a little shop vac. That said, dust collection is a huge headache because you basically need to design your workshop with dust collection in mind to get a really good result. Otherwise it’s always a compromise.

A1BASE

English major? No. I was a South African corporal. 😎

Steve Crane

Bloody English Majors!

Jim Williams

As an FYI: for anyone considering a grinder and who is good at making stuff, you can also consider building your own. http://dcknives.blogspot.com/ is a fantastic source for info on this. I built a 2x72 belt grinder and absolutely love it. But whether you buy one or build one, the step up to a 2x72 or (I imagine as I haven't used one) 2x48 makes for a massive improvement on your standard benchtop belt sander!

Kris Towson

I have a few things in mind. Check your messages!

Rex Krueger

In the "Requested Features" department - Do you have anything in the works on builds or tips on DIY dust collectors or air filters for the shop? I'm starting out with a couple of garage sale shop vacs, but there's gotta be something better. Thanks!

Howard Tuckey

Excellent, as usual! One of my own problems, though, is in remembering whether or not I already have that particular tool. Case in point - was just this morning sorting out some boxes and buckets in my old storage shed, and found yet another bit brace. I've gone from none to seven of them now, in conditions ranging from pristine to rusted-solid-but-salvageable, and a whole bin full of chisels, bits, files, and punches. Not quite enough to rent a table at the next flea market, but I imagine I can get a buck or two out of them at our next garage sale.

Howard Tuckey

I believe you! She's really a delight when she's not yorking at 4AM. As to the boot sale, I have my finger crossed for you. Everyone should enjoy the thrill of this hunt.

Rex Krueger

It must have been fun. Wish we had something like that out here. We are going to be having a big car show next year for the first time, it's a "swap and show" event. So I imagine there will plenty of junk for sale. fingers crossed. I probably would have bought that box of carriage making planes, or at least thought about it with a good deal of avarice for the entire weekend lol. And that jointer plane! OMG, jealous? Hell ya. enjoy the vomiting daughter while you can :D all too soon those days will be over, and you will miss them.

William Allen

Where did you come up with that figure? Mine was less than 1000 shipped from Australia with attachments.

A1BASE

they are going to be on the USD2000 order, probably more.

William Allen

I do not, but the AACA website may have it up already. I don't know when they announce it.

Rex Krueger

Sorry I missed the Hershey event. I did not know went it was and now i missed it two years in a row. Do you know the date for next year?

tom Masters

Here's hoping Stella doesn't have THAT bug!

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you look forward to my stuff. I look forward to making it! I haven't seen any big car shows here in Ohio, but they must be out there.

Rex Krueger

It’s been going around. My kid had it a couple of weeks ago and we caught it thereafter. It’s a properly nasty bug that wiped us out for a week each.

A1BASE

That is worth thinking about!

Rex Krueger

It's become totally unreasonable.

Rex Krueger

Yes, but I'm also dyslexic, so spelling can be a challenge.

Rex Krueger

Ah, ahem. I need to fix that.

Rex Krueger

Hope your daughter is feeling better. Late night vomiting kids is no fun for anyone!

Brian Suker

Whew! I was starting to have withdrawal from no Saturday video. I know, you did warn us, but withdrawal. Looks like a great time. I need to look into this here in SW Ohio.

Jim Williams

Talking of sanding belts, Alec Steele on YouTube is starting to distribute the 2x48 belt grinder that I use. It’s an amazing piece of kit from Australia and should be available at the end of the month. If you’re on the lookout for a properly versatile grinder for metal and woodwork that isn’t too big that one might be a good choice.

A1BASE

I’d end up with so many tools that I never use if I went to one of these shows! Keeping your tool count reasonable is a skill in itself so they don’t take over the garage!

A1BASE

Wasn’t Rex an English teacher? 😂😂😉

A1BASE

I'm an American and so is Rex, but I spell it the same way you do. :)

Jason Bailey

Ignore if it's just an American vs British English spelling issue but I thought the title should be spelled "Hidden 'G'ems".
