Early Access Video: Reviewing the Continental Smoother

Friends:

I uploaded this video earlier today, but it cut out about a minute before the end. I have no idea why. I've never had a video do that before. So, I rendered it again and re-uploaded it. This one works all the way to the end.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

You can totally make one of these. The horn is not a big deal. Attaching it to the plane isn't easy, but there are ways. I'd make this plane from really almost any hardwood. Maple is my top choice, but I made a plane out of elm once. Works great.

This seems like it would be a fun project for a build-it-yourself plane. I've never built a plane before, i don't know if the horn or body style presents unreasonable difficulty, also, what midwest woods would be good substitutions?

You can get Narex stuff over here from Amazon. I've got a set of their chisels. They're actually surprisingly good and needed very little work out of the box.

A1BASE

During the Youtube show you asked if we knew other good cheap European planes and I found that Narex makes one! I have no idea if its any good but in theory the cutting edge should be good. Wonder if you can track it down on your side of the pond Rex?

Great to hear. I'm a big fan of affordable planes. I agree that finding a continental plane with a narrow mouth would life easier. I'm going to do some serious looking. Unfortunately Amazon.ca doesn't seem to have any. Wish me luck!

That's really nice to hear!! I thought that was a great plane when I reviewed it.

Nice review, Rex. Halfway through the video I was looking at buying the plane, but then I watched the rest of it and decided to pass on this one. Incidentally, I bought the Chinese wooden plane you reviewed a while ago. I like it, though I had a heck of a time getting it to take an even shaving along the width of the blade. Once I got it dialed in, it has been a nice plane to have in the stable.

The edge durability was excellent. Really a standout iron.

You know, it's hard to find a modern map that looks good on screen. Most of them have bland colors and too much text. I hate to say it, but I go for clear presentation, even if I have to sacrifice a little accuracy. No offense intended to my European brothers and sisters!

Nice review, especially for me as a viewer on Continental Europe, and thus a wooden plane user. I am surprised that plane fared so well. Up to now I only encountered either very cheap, awful or high quality, expensive ones. This might be just the middle ground: affordable and acceptable quality. But for professionals Ulmia or ECE planes are still the planes of choice. By the way: That map of Europe you show in the video at about 1:05 is very outdated, seems to be from before WWII. There were some major changes since then...

Wooden plans are indeed awesome. The real beauty is that you easily maintain, alter, or make them yourself with simple tools. I have chisels made in Czech Republic, they are awesome. Ah, now I know how to plane Douglas fir, I'll have to see if I can find a scraper plane. Love the chip breaker adjusting trick, I did not know that. Can't wait for the round up. Ah, how did you find the edge durability of this plane?

William Allen

My pleasure!

Rex Krueger

Nice review. Thanks for the critique.
