Early Access Video: Make a Simple Box

Friends:

Last week's video on easy dovetails was just the start. This week, we're taking that simple frame and transforming it into a lovely storage box. This video gives me the chance to cover essential topics like thicknessing stock by hand, hand-planing round-overs and installing hinges.

The final result is...more than I was expecting. It's a pretty nice box and it's going to lead into next week's video on easy finishing techniques.

Oh man, did I just give it away?!?

Nuts.

Also, cutting this larger dovetail taught me more than trying to do the dovetails for Matt's project. No fault of his, but I was more worried about cutting the "perfect" dovetail and made a mess of most of them.

Jim Williams

I think getting going is the hard part. Once you've cut the "bad" set, you seem to get better fast. Keep at it!

Rex Krueger

Well, I have glued up my first set of dovetails. I took inspiration for you, Rex, and only made a single dovetail. Now, they ain't purty, but they will do for the first try. I have 2 more boxes to build for a friend, so more practice starting tomorrow afternoon!

Jim Williams

It's totally my pleasure!

Rex Krueger

You're entirely right...but I get 90% of my views the first week a video goes up and so most of the people who click a link like that really are looking for the video from 2 weeks ago. So, it seems to workout okay, especially with a link in the Cards.

Rex Krueger

Whoops! Dunno if it makes a big difference, and I've only noticed it a couple of times, but in this one you refer to a review (the Grizzly Plane) that you made "two weeks ago." - That's fine for today, but someone tapping in to your channel a few months from now might want to look for that, and the "two weeks" reference wouldn't be too helpful. Maybe use the actual date, or month/year? Or maybe it's not that critical - I'm an old, nit-picky, frustrated proofreader, and tend to notice things like that. Weird, I know ... :-)

Howard Tuckey

Excellent! I'm getting into making gifts for Christmas, and this is exactly the type of content that I'm looking for right now. Games, puzzles, etc, would be great too! Again, thank you for excellent content and presentation!

Howard Tuckey

I have about 50 or so roughly 36 inches long by 6 inches wide and between 1/2 and 3/4 thick, should be getting more soon too, really need to start doing something with them haha

Ryan Roberts

For the price, they're hard to beat, and since i do use power tools, I'm already wearing my hearing protection all the time.

Rex Krueger

I feel the same way!

Rex Krueger

I find making things by hand to be somehow, far more rewarding than doing the same thing using power tools.

William Allen

WorkTunes! despite not needing ear protection because I don't use any power tools, I wear mine all the time :D

William Allen

YOu can post them, they're just not clickable. That's a mighty nice stand there! It's pricey, but Stew-Mac never has been shy with their prices.

Rex Krueger

I think your original suggestion was in my head when i did the project. What's off the right? Probably the camera's viewscreen. I try to look right into the lens but I do glance over to make sure I'm in frame.

Rex Krueger

I just did some of these in oak, it was actually much easier than pine because the wood holds up better.

Rex Krueger

I'm sure you'll keep getting better as you practice. I'm hoping I do. It doesn't seem to be that hard if we keep at it.

Rex Krueger

Great box, just what we talked about ages ago. One question tho. What is it you're looking at when your eyes shift from the camera to your right?

James Boatright

So glad you are making these videos right now, my next project as soon as I get my garage cleaned out is to make a few boxes for some tools, got all kinds of free oak boards I'm going to be using. Should make for some nice little boxes

Ryan Roberts

Rex, very nice box. At this point, I would rate the dovetails I've created as being "serviceable." I'm working to improve my skills. Since you asked, stylistically, I love the look of well executed dovetails. I hope to attain a level of skill that allows me to incorporate them into my work as both stylistic and structural elements. I'm looking forward to the upcoming finishing episode. I enjoy working with pine, but have often been less than satisfied with finishing results. As always, all my best, and thank you.

Mark L

I'm really glad you think so!

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

That's a really different approach that I haven't seen before. Please post pics on the community section if you can when you're done!

Rex Krueger

Hi rex going to try a different approach. Butt the ends together then clam up the box and drill down between the joints vertically so I have half a hole each side .then glue in a dowel. So it holds both peaces together. Then slightly miter. Until part of the dowel is exposed so that forms a corner radius. The dowel is going to be a different wood to the box .only expementing at the moment. Lots of love and kind regards to you all

THE VICTORIAN WORKSHOP

Another great episode. I love your approach. I love this series. It is great you describe your learning process and how to fix problems!

Duncan

Top work

Alex Southwell

Apparently you can't post links...?

David Thompson

Wow! Stewart-Macdonald has something like that, with a few improvements, but as with all StewMac stuff, it's pricey. https://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Vises/Erlewine_ShopStand.html

David Thompson

Flea market $10. I know, i couldn't believe it either.

Rex Krueger

Rex, where did you get the base for the vise that's in front of the flags in the Amazing Indian Hand-Planes episode?

David Thompson

Interesting that you mention dowels. That way my original plan and I think it's a great method for this box. Hope we get pictures in the Community page!

Rex Krueger

I'm planning to do one with dowels and contrasting wood plugs (Aldi had a cheap set of plug cutters). Not blind dowels, just clamp the boards together and drill right on through from the outside. Once it's glued up, I'll stick plugs in the holes for decoration and sand them flat.
