I often get frustrated with all the useless gear that hardware companies try to sell us. And while I wouldn't call a woodturning chuck "useless," it's certainly a convenience tool rather than a necessity.
I've also noticed that more and more turners are under the impression that you can ONLY do bowls and hollow-forms with a chuck. That's just crazy. Chucks for wood-turning are pretty new and bowls have been turned for CENTURIES. So, here's a nice little video where I show how to turn a complete bowl with no chuck.
It's always the same with me: buy fewer tools, do more work, save money for beer.
