Free Plans: The $30 Vise

Comments

Got yeah.

James McDowell

The think about this thread is that it's FAST. All-thread is going to be slooow.

Rex Krueger

Could you use all thread in place of the jack? In pricing the Jack's and got to thinking if all thread and a wing nut would work just as well.

James McDowell

I go back and forth over which vise to use. For now, I am going to go vise-less and see what I can come up with to do a similar job. There are more than a few ideas out there on YT.

Jim Williams

I don't know if this would make a good end vise as-is. I think you might want to move the screw to the middle and use two guide-bars. I think that's what I'd do.

Rex Krueger

I think I might have neglected to put that in the plans, but there's nothing to it: just a screw through a little scrap of dowel.

Rex Krueger

Rex I was wondering about the handle lock you showed on your prototype

Stephen Esden

I've been working with a bench I build myself. No vise so far. Here's what I discovered: end vise work great for holding work that is going to be straining down the length of the bench, they work far less well when you are working across the width of the bench, because that is the narrow side of the bench, you get a bit of rocking, even with the bench really level. Face vises have their own issues. If you mount the vise with the back jaw even with the front of the bench you will have to work around holding the piece as you set it in the vise or you will trap your fingers. If you mount the vise sticking out far enough for your fingers to have clearance, really long boards need to be separately supported (drilling a row of 3/4" holes with their tops even with the tops of the vise screw can solve that by allowing you to use hold fasts or even just dowels). Both end vises and front vises limit how wide of material you can put in them. Not so with pipe clamp vises, because you can set the pipe clamps to whatever width you need and get mega solid clamping either under you bench top or across the bench top. Leg vises are also very interesting because they are far more flexible than either end, should, front or tail or even wagon vises. if you put your leg vise on a side of the bench with at 12" tall apron with 3/4 holes every 4 inches up and across, you can use a single holdfast to clamp the other side of the piece, making any size or shape of wood easily clamped solidly. Hope that doesn't add to your confusion!

William Allen

I may have to adapt that to my new bench as an end vice. Of course, the real question is do I want an end or face vise? That is the tough question.

Jim Williams

I have bees wax on hand so ill probably try that first. Thanks.

Josh Miller

You can use either bees wax or just plain parrafine (candle wax). You might want to melt it before aplying. BTW: Thanks for the plans Rex...

Frans van Ballegooijen

What type of wax would be best to use as a lubricant?
